Book excerpt: "Matt Scarpino has provided a great tool for the hobbyist starting out in the circuit board design world, demonstrating all the features you'll need to create your own circuit board projects. However, the experienced engineer will also benefit from the book, as it serves as a complete reference guide to all EAGLE software configuration settings and features. His insightful guidance helps simplify difficult tasks, and his handy tips will help save you hours of trial-and-error experimentation." --Rich Blum, author, Sams Teach Yourself Arduino Programming in 24 Hours and Sams Teach Yourself Python Programming for Raspberry Pi in 24 Hours Powerful, flexible, and inexpensive, EAGLE is the ideal PCB design solution for every Maker/DIYer, startup, hobbyist, or student. Today, all open source Arduino designs are released in EAGLE format: If you want to design cost-effective new PCBs, this is the tool to learn. Matthew Scarpino helps you take full advantage of EAGLE's remarkable capabilities. You won't find any differential equations here: only basic circuit theory and hands-on techniques for designing effective PCBs and getting innovative new gadgets to market. Scarpino starts with an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of PCB design. Next, he walks through the design of basic, intermediate, and complex circuit boards, starting with a simple inverting amplifier and culminating in a six-layer single-board computer with hundreds of components and thousands of routed connections. As the circuits grow more complex, you'll master advanced EAGLE features and discover how to automate crucial design-related tasks. Whatever your previous experience, Scarpino's start-to-finish examples and practical insight can help you create designs of stunning power and efficiency. Understand single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer boards Design practical circuits with the schematic editor Transform schematics into physical board designs Convert board designs into Gerber output files for fabrication Expand EAGLE's capabilities with new libraries and components Exchange designs with LTspice and simulate their responses to input Automate simple repetitive operations with editor commands Streamline circuit design and library generation with User Language programs (ULPs) Design for the advanced BeagleBone Black, with high-speed BGA devices and a 32-bit system on a chip (SoC) Use buses to draw complex connections between components Configure stackups, create/route BGA components, and route high-speed signals eagle-book.com provides an archive containing the design files for the book's circuits. It also includes EAGLE libraries, scripts, and User Language programs (ULPs).

Book excerpt: Successful movie producer Wolf Willett is stunned when he sees his own death reported in a major newspaper. It says he was a victim in a triple homicide during a sordid tryst with his wife and a friend. But who is the unidentified corpse? Why can't Wolf remember anything about the night in question? And who wants him dead? Wolf had the means and motive—and his inexplicable memory loss seems far too suspicious to suit Sante Fe's crusading D.A., who promptly has Wolf arrested. And when another murder complicates the scenario, he turns to hot-shot criminal attorney Ed Eagle to help clear his name—and stop a killer who's determined to finish the job.

Book excerpt: A Wall Street Journal national security reporter takes readers into the lives of frontline U.S. special operations troops fighting to keep the Taliban and Islamic State from overthrowing the U.S.-backed government in the final years of the war in Afghanistan. A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “Powerful, important, and searing." —General David Petraeus, U.S. Army (ret.), former commander, U.S. Central Command, former CIA director In 2015, the White House claimed triumphantly that “the longest war in American history” was over. But for some, it was just the beginning of a new war, fought by Special Operations Forces, with limited resources, little governmental oversight, and contradictory orders. With big picture insight and on-the-ground grit, Jessica Donati shares the stories of the impossible choices these soldiers must make. After the fall of a major city to the Taliban that year, Hutch, a battle-worn Green Beret on his fifth combat tour was ordered on a secret mission to recapture it and inadvertently called in an airstrike on a Doctors Without Borders hospital, killing dozens. Caleb stepped on a bomb during a mission in notorious Sangin. Andy was trapped with his team during a raid with a crashed Black Hawk and no air support. Through successive policy directives under the Obama and Trump administrations, America came to rely almost entirely on US Special Forces, and without a long-term plan, failed to stabilize Afghanistan, undermining US interests both at home and abroad. Eagle Down is a riveting account of the heroism, sacrifice, and tragedy experienced by those that fought America’s longest war.

SIPI is operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, an agency of the U.S. government that has overseen and managed the relationship between the government and American Indian tribes for almost two hundred years. Students at SIPI are registered members of federally recognized American Indian tribes from throughout the contiguous United States and Alaska. A fascinatingly hybridized institution, SIPI attempts to meld two conflicting institutional models—a tribally controlled college or university and a Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Indian school—with their unique corporate cultures, rules, and philosophies. Students attempt to cope with the institution and successfully make their way through it by using (consciously or not) an array of metaphorical representations of the school. Students who used discourses of discipline and control compared SIPI to a BIA boarding school, a high school, or a prison, and focused on the school’s restrictive policies drawn from the BIA model. Those who used discourses of family and haven emphasized the emotional connection built between students and other members of the SIPI community following the TCU model. Speakers who used discourses of agency and selfreliance asserted that students can define their own experiences at SIPI. Through a series of interviews, this volume examines the ways in which students attempt to accommodate this variety of conflicts and presents an innovative and enlightening look into the contemporary state of American Indian educational institutions.

Book excerpt: David McNally, peak-performance consultant to businesses and author of Even Eagles Need A Push, returns with an inspiring and timely look at a problem faced by more and more of us. In today's dynamic global economy, the old rules for how to succeed--indeed, how to even stay employed--have been radically changed. The restructuring and re-engineering of our workplaces demanded by the new landscape of technology, international competition and communications now requires us to apply the lessons learned by organizations to our own professional and personal lives; what's needed now is a restructuring and re-engineering of ourselves. Combining a highly readable blend of a seminar's worth of exercises, research-driven insights, and inspiring stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, David McNally guides us through seven chapters, each illustrating the attitudes and behaviors needed to navigate this new world of work. The Eagle's Secret teaches us how to trust ourselves and find the strengths that allow us not only to survive, but thrive.
