Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough and insightful introduction to using genetic algorithms to optimize electromagnetic systems Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics focuses on optimizing the objective function when a computer algorithm, analytical model, or experimental result describes the performance of an electromagnetic system. It offers expert guidance to optimizing electromagnetic systems using genetic algorithms (GA), which have proven to be tenacious in finding optimal results where traditional techniques fail. Genetic Algorithms in Electromagnetics begins with an introduction to optimization and several commonly used numerical optimization routines, and goes on to feature: Introductions to GA in both binary and continuous variable forms, complete with examples of MATLAB(r) commands Two step-by-step examples of optimizing antenna arrays as well as a comprehensive overview of applications of GA to antenna array design problems Coverage of GA as an adaptive algorithm, including adaptive and smart arrays as well as adaptive reflectors and crossed dipoles Explanations of the optimization of several different wire antennas, starting with the famous "crooked monopole" How to optimize horn, reflector, and microstrip patch antennas, which require significantly more computing power than wire antennas Coverage of GA optimization of scattering, including scattering from frequency selective surfaces and electromagnetic band gap materials Ideas on operator and parameter selection for a GA Detailed explanations of particle swarm optimization and multiple objective optimization An appendix of MATLAB code for experimentation

Book excerpt: This book presents research focused on the design of fractal antennas using bio-inspired computing techniques. The authors present designs for fractal antennas having desirable features like size reduction characteristics, enhanced gain, and improved bandwidths. The research is summarized in six chapters which highlight the important issues related to fractal antenna design and the mentioned computing techniques. Chapters demonstrate several applied concepts and techniques used in the process such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Genetic Algorithms (GAs), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO). The work aims to provide cost-effective and efficient solutions to the demand for compact antennas due to the increasing demand for reduced sizes of components in modern wireless communication devices. A key feature of the book includes an extensive literature survey to understand the concept of fractal antennas, their features, and design approaches. Another key feature is the systematic approach to antenna design. The book explains how the IE3D software is used to simulate various fractal antennas, and how the results can be used to select a design. This is followed by ANN model development and testing for optimization, and an exploration of ANN ensemble models for the design of fractal antennas. The bio-inspired computing techniques based on GA, PSO, and BFO are developed to find the optimal design of the proposed fractal antennas for the desired applications. The performance comparison of the given computing techniques is also explained to demonstrate how to select the best algorithm for a given bio-inspired design. Finally, the book explains how to evaluate antenna designs. This book is a valuable resource for students (from UG to PG levels) and research scholars undertaking learning modules or projects on microstrip and patch antenna design in communications or electronics engineering courses.

Book excerpt: This book addresses space science and communication – one of the main pillars of space science sustainability, an area that has recently become of great importance. In this regard, research and development play a crucial role in sustainability development. However, obtaining essential data in the physical world to interpret the universe and to predict what could happen in the future is a challenging undertaking. Accordingly, providing valid information to understand trends, evaluate needs, and create sustainable development policies and programs in the best interest of all the people is indispensable. This book was prepared in conjunction with the fifth meeting of the 2017 International Conference on Space Science and Communication (IconSpace2017), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 3-5 May 2017 to introduce graduate stuandents, researchers, lecturers, engineers, geospatialists, meteorologists, climatologists, astronomers and practitioners to the latest applications of space science, telecommunications, meteorology, remote sensing and related fields. The individual papers discuss a broad range of space science and technology applications, e.g. the formation of global warming from space, environmental and remote sensing, communication systems, and smart materials for space applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Antenna design has grown more stringent and difficult over the years as the world becomes strictly a wireless environment. The inherent tradeoffs that exist between gain, radiation pattern, bandwidth, and physical size and the multiple parameters that must be considered make antenna design a lengthy and tedious process. Methods have been devised which automate this complex process of antenna optimization through the use of genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, and simulated annealing. Genetic algorithms are capable of handling a large number of design parameters and work for optimization problems that have discontinuous or non-differentiable multi-dimensional solution spaces, making them ideal for antenna optimization. In the present work, a genetic algorithm has been used for size reduction in microstrip patch antennas and design tradeoff optimization between beamwidth and gain in helical antennas. A method for reducing the size of microstrip patch antennas by up to 75% by removing rectangular and circular slots from the metal of the microstrip patch is presented. A solid patch antenna that resonates at 10 GHz is forced to resonant at 6 GHz through the removal of the different shaped slots. Given the number and shape of the slots, the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the size and location of the slot on the patch. The designs are obtained by interfacing the genetic algorithm and Ansoft High Frequency System Simulator (HFSS) and validated through design, construction, and testing. High gain, with broad half-power beamwidths (HPBW) is traditionally extremely difficult to achieve due to the inherent tradeoff between the two. A genetic algorithm has been applied to design a helical antenna with a gain of 10 dB and HPBWs of 60 degrees. In order to achieve this, three physical parameters of the helix have been changed, namely the pitch, helix radius, and the ground plane geometry. The second objective is to create an antenna that displays different HPBWs in the two radiation planes. This could be extremely useful in many communication environments and there is yet no existing method to achieve this. The genetic algorithm produced a helical antenna that shows a 19 degrees difference in HPBW between the two radiation planes, while still displaying a 7 dB gain and low side lobes. Numerical Electromagnetic Code 4 (NEC4) is used, and a method of communication between MATLAB and NEC4 has been developed to make the genetic algorithm optimization possible"--Abstract.
