Book excerpt: This book is written with the intent of reaching those people who are interested in learning about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but are not yet comfortable reading from the Bible. It is written in the form of a novel, in a logical chronology, which endeavors to combine the four gospel accounts. Following the feasts of the Jewish calendar and set within the historical context of the time, it includes the author’s own spiritual insights into Jesus’s words and works, inserted into the gospel story. This book truly contains something for everyone. For the seeker, it provides a good place to start—the accompanying scripture references are intended to direct the reader to the true biblical account. For the novice, this account will go a long way to filling any gaps in understanding the biblical narrative. And the author’s spiritual insights will challenge even the substantial knowledge of the most-learned of Bible scholars. Expect to be entertained, encouraged, and challenged by this novel approach to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Come rediscover God’s spiritual truth, knowing that iron sharpens iron.

Book Synopsis Ancient Law and Modern Understanding by : Alan Watson
Download or read book Ancient Law and Modern Understanding written by Alan Watson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ancient Law and Modern Understanding Alan Watson proposes that ancient law is relevant and important for understanding history, theology, sociology, and literature. "Law, though technical," he writes, "is not remote from scholarship on other matters, and law is a central element in society." From Homeric Greece to present-day Armenia, Watson examines law's influence. Without a sensitivity to technical legal language, scholars of literature or history miss much: the use of puns in Plautus, Sulla's claim that Julius Caesar was descended from a slave, the relationship between the Synoptic Gospels. Legal history is an essential tool for understanding society, Watson argues, but it must be applied with knowledge of how law moves from one society to the next, legal reliance on authority, juristic concern with apparent trivia, and the impact on legal growth.

Book Synopsis Jewish Traditions in Early Christian Literature, Volume 1 Paul and the Jewish Law by : Peter Tomson

This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While interest in Paul's relationship to Judaism has been growing recently, this study adds an important aspect by comparing Paul’s practical instruction with the ancient halakha or Jewish traditional law. First Corinthians is found to be a source of prime importance, and surprisingly, halakha appears to be basic to Paul's instruction for non-Jewish Christians. The book includes thorough discussion of hermeneutic and methodological implications, always viewed in relation to the history of Pauline and Judaic study. Attention is also being paid to the setting within Hellenistic culture. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the texture of Paul's thought and these are applied to two ‘theological’ passages decisive for his place in Judaism. Historical and theological implications are vast, both regarding Paul's relationship to Judaism, his attitude towards Jesus and his Apostles, and the meaning of his teaching concerning justification and the Law.

Download or read book Jesus and the Law written by Alan Watson and published by . This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus and the Law, Alan Watson measures the success of Jesus's ministry by explaining his attitude toward, and knowledge of, certain laws and legal customs. Watson argues that Jesus engendered harsh responses from his fellow Jews by his apparently contemptuous or insensitive behavior that stemmed from a lack of knowledge or concern about legal and rabbinic strictures. Informed by Watson's knowledge of Jewish and Roman law and ancient history, and his skillful relation of Mishnaic and Talmudic materials to the time of Jesus, this book is more than a vivid retelling of the events of the Gospels. Jesus and the Law joins three other works by Watson-The Trial of Jesus, Jesus and the Jews, and Jesus: A Profile-to examine the early dynamism of western religion through refocused attention on biblical texts and other historical sources.

Book excerpt: The second volume of the time-honored travel book about Greece, written 2,000 years ago Written by a Greek traveller in the second century ad for a principally Roman audience, Pausanias' Guide to Greece is a comprehensive, extraordinarily literate and well-informed guidebook for tourists of the age. Concentrating on buildings, tombs and statues, it also describes in detail the myths, religious beliefs and historical background behind the monuments considered. In doing so, it preserves Greek legends, quotes classical literature and poetry that would otherwise have been lost, and offers a fascinating depiction of the glory of classical Greece immediately before its third-century decline. This, the second of two volumes, explores Southern Greece including Sparta, Arkadia, Bassae and the games at Olympia. An inspiration to travellers and writers across the ages, including Byron and Shelley, it remains one of the most influential of all travel books. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
