Book Synopsis Semiotics of Images by : Alexandros Ph. Lagopoulos
Download or read book Semiotics of Images written by Alexandros Ph. Lagopoulos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-11-18 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a unique collaborative effort to bring together the multiple aspects of the semiotics of images into a coherent approach based on Greimasian and post-Greimasian theory. Starting with a critical discussion of epistemological and theoretical issues and continuing with methodology and numerous examples of applied analysis, it aims to provide the educated reader with a consistent and unified theoretical framework for the semiotic study of visual cultural texts. It offers a comprehensive overview of the semiotics of static images such as painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, but also dynamic images such as cinema, animation and digital games. Readers will benefit from the special emphasis placed on the analysis of the pictorial signifier, visual syntax and the structuring of the semantic universe.

Book Synopsis Comparative Physiology and Evolution of Vision in Invertebrates by : H. Autrum
Download or read book Comparative Physiology and Evolution of Vision in Invertebrates written by H. Autrum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the comparative physiology of photoreception by the Protista and the invertebrates two aspects are emphasized: (1) the diversity of visual processes in these groups and (2) their bearing upon general mechanisms of photoreception. Invertebrates have evolved a far greater variety of adaptations than vertebrates modifications aiding survival in the remarkably different biotopes they occupy. The number of species in itself suggests this multiformity; each of them has peculiarities of its own, in morphology as well as in physiology and behavior. But these special adaptations are variations on a few great themes. Although the catalogue of invertebrate species is immense, the literature concerning them nearly rivals it in extent-even if one considers only that fraction dealing with visual physiology. Taxonomy proceeds by grouping the species, categorizing them in genera, families, orders, and progressively larger units. Similarly, comparative physiology aims at an analogous, more or less compre hensive, classification. This Part A of Volume VII/6, like Part B that follows it, emphasizes the broad questions that concern groups larger than the individual species; in some cases these questions have general applicability. The middle course between approaches that are too specialized and those that are too general is often elusive, but here we attempt to follow it. The vast number of special adaptations-probably, as we have said, as large as the number of species-is beyond the range even of a handbook.

Book Synopsis Interactive Multimodal Information Management by : Hervé Bourlard
Download or read book Interactive Multimodal Information Management written by Hervé Bourlard and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past twenty years, computers and networks have gained a prominent role in supporting human communications. This book presents recent research in multimodal information processing, which demonstrates that computers can achieve more than what telephone calls or videoconferencing can do. The book offers a snapshot of current capabilities for the analysis of human communications in several modalities – audio, speech, language, images, video, and documents – and for accessing this information interactively. The book has a clear application goal, which is the capture, automatic analysis, storage, and retrieval of multimodal signals from human interaction in meetings. This goal provides a controlled experimental framework and helps generating shared data, which is required for methods based on machine learning. This goal has shaped the vision of the contributors to the book and of many other researchers cited in it. It has also received significant long-term support through a series of projects, including the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) in Interactive Multimodal Information Management (IM2), to which the contributors to the book have been connected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No more than a fish loves water. - Is not this a strange fellow, my lord, that so confidently seems to undertake this business, which he knows is not to be done; damns himself to do, and dares better be damn'd than to dolt? All's Well That Ends Well Act III, Sc. 6 This volume is the direct result of a NATO-Advanced Study Institute of the same title. held at Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada, August 1974, under the joint sponsor ship of the NATO-Scientific Advisory Committee, National Research Council of Canada and the Universite de Montreal. It is not, however, strictly restricted to the lectures and seminars pre sented at the ASI. Contributions have been included from two workers who found at a fairly late stage that they could not attend and also included are a table giving the visual pigments and an other dealing with the distribution and development of retinomotor responses. I encouraged the authors to prepare speculative reviews highlighting their own research or that of their immediate col leagues and a number of them have done so. Several contributors, notably those who were asked to give lectures of a general nature at the ASI have written reviews of somewhat greater scope. The result is a collection of papers representing a great variety of approaches to the study of vision in fishes.

Book Synopsis Vision in the Novels of George Sand by : Manon Mathias
Download or read book Vision in the Novels of George Sand written by Manon Mathias and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth-century novelist, George Sand, is most famous today for her tumultuous love life and trouser-wearing days in Paris, but she achieved major commercial and critical success in her day and has gradually made her way back into the literary canon. Mainly known for her pastoral tales and allegedly simplistic idealism, Sand in fact produced around ninety novels which experiment with a wide range of themes, forms and aesthetic models. This book offers thefirst study of vision in Sand's works. It argues that, rather than rejecting reality in favour of the ideal, Sand integrates physical observation with internal forms of seeing such as the imaginationand visionary insights. The study maintains that Sand's understanding of vision provides the basis for her distinctive style and challenges conventional categorisations of the novel in this period.

Book Synopsis Naturalisme et excès visuels by : Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze
Download or read book Naturalisme et excès visuels written by Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Avancées en ophtalmologie : apport de la conquête spatiale written by CORBÉ Christian and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
