Book excerpt: This work is dedicated to the study of phase noise in fiber optic delay line optoelectronic oscillators (OEO). This particular class of microwave range oscillator was recently introduced (1994), and intensively explored due to its very attractive potential for ultra-low short term phase noise features. It is intended for applications to Radar, Space, and high bit rate optical telecommunications. On the basis of a time domain theoretical approach, the dynamic and the phase noise properties of the OEO was investigated. A stochastic, nonlinear, delay differential equation was derived directly from the description of the oscillator loop chain: the most relevant nonlinearity of a Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator, the km-long fiber delay line, the dynamics ruled by the microwave amplitude selective filter, and the different additive and multiplicative noise sources (laser, photodiode, RF amplifier). The linearization of the model around the OEO monomode operating point led to the theoretical description of the phase and amplitude noise performances. Those theoretical results are compared with experimental investigations, covering both the deviœ noise characteristics, as weil as the whole oscillator. Specific high sensitivity noise measurement techniques were developed using optoelectronic architectures of the measurement bench on the one hand, and correlation principles on the other hand. Avery good agreement between experiment and theory is obtained, leading to a quantitative description of the OEO phase noise features, and highlighting the most relevant noise sources limiting the performances. Selected devices allowed to achieve an OEO phase noise as low as -143 dBrad[au carré]/Hz at 10 kHz from the carrier at 10 GHz. The remaining limiting noise sources are finally discussed, and various possible improvements are suggested for future OEOs.

Combining fresh treatments of classic problems with up-to-date research, asymptotic techniques appropriate for nonlinear dynamical systems are shown to offer a powerful alternative to numerical simulations. The combined analytical and experimental description of dynamical instabilities provides a clear derivation of physical formulae and an evaluation of their significance. Starting with the observation of different time scales of an operating laser, the book develops approximation techniques to systematically explore their effects. Laser dynamical regimes are introduced at different levels of complexity, from standard turn-on experiments to stiff, chaotic, spontaneous or driven pulsations. Particular attention is given to quantitative comparisons between experiments and theory. The book broadens the range of analytical tools available to laser physicists and provides applied mathematicians with problems of practical interest, making it invaluable for graduate students and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest edition of the essential text and professional reference, with substantial new material on such topics as vEB trees, multithreaded algorithms, dynamic programming, and edge-based flow. Some books on algorithms are rigorous but incomplete; others cover masses of material but lack rigor. Introduction to Algorithms uniquely combines rigor and comprehensiveness. The book covers a broad range of algorithms in depth, yet makes their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers. Each chapter is relatively self-contained and can be used as a unit of study. The algorithms are described in English and in a pseudocode designed to be readable by anyone who has done a little programming. The explanations have been kept elementary without sacrificing depth of coverage or mathematical rigor. The first edition became a widely used text in universities worldwide as well as the standard reference for professionals. The second edition featured new chapters on the role of algorithms, probabilistic analysis and randomized algorithms, and linear programming. The third edition has been revised and updated throughout. It includes two completely new chapters, on van Emde Boas trees and multithreaded algorithms, substantial additions to the chapter on recurrence (now called “Divide-and-Conquer”), and an appendix on matrices. It features improved treatment of dynamic programming and greedy algorithms and a new notion of edge-based flow in the material on flow networks. Many exercises and problems have been added for this edition. The international paperback edition is no longer available; the hardcover is available worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
