Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader the theory of nonlinear inclusions and hemivariational inequalities with emphasis on the study of contact mechanics. The work covers both abstract results in the area of nonlinear inclusions, hemivariational inequalities as well as the study of specific contact problems, including their modelling and their variational analysis. Provided results are based on original research on the existence, uniqueness, regularity and behavior of the solution for various classes of nonlinear stationary and evolutionary inclusions. In carrying out the variational analysis of various contact models, one systematically uses results of hemivariational inequalities and, in this way, illustrates the applications of nonlinear analysis in contact mechanics. New mathematical methods are introduced and applied in the study of nonlinear problems, which describe the contact between a deformable body and a foundation. Contact problems arise in industry, engineering and geophysics. Their variational analysis presented in this book lies the background for their numerical analysis. This volume will interest mathematicians, applied mathematicians, engineers, and scientists as well as advanced graduate students.

Book excerpt: The functionality of modern structural, mechanical and electrical or electronic systems depends on their ability to perform under uncertain conditions. Consideration of uncertainties and their effect on system behavior is an essential and integral part of defining systems. In eleven chapters, leading experts present an overview of the current state of uncertainty modeling, analysis and design of large systems in four major areas: finite and boundary element methods (common structural analysis techniques), fatigue, stability analysis, and fault-tolerant systems. The content of this book is unique; it describes exciting research developments and challenges in emerging areas, and provide a sophisticated toolbox for tackling uncertainty modeling in real systems.

Book excerpt: This book is motivated by stimulating problems in contact mechanics, emphasizing antiplane frictional contact with linearly elastic and viscoelastic materials. It focuses on the essentials with respect to the qualitative aspects of several classes of variational inequalities (VIs). Clearly presented, easy to follow, and well-referenced, this work treats almost entirely VIs of the second kind, with much of the material being state-of-the-art.

This book was released on 1996-08-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.
