Book excerpt: The past decade has seen remarkable growth in research related to petroleum reseIVoir simulation. This growth reflects several developments, not the least of which is the increased interest in oil recovery technologies requiring sophisticated engineer ing. Augmenting this interest has been the broader availability of supercomputers capable of handling the tremendous computational demands of a typical reseIVoir simulator. The field of reseIVoir simulation incorporates several major facets of applied mathematics. First, in view of the varieyt and complexity of the processes encoun tered, it is imperative that the modeler adopt a systematic approach to establishing the equations governing reseIVoir flows. Second, the mathematical structure of these flow equations needs to be carefully analyzed in order to develop appropriate and efficient numerical methods for their solution. Third, since some aspects of the discretized flow equations are typically stiff, one must develop efficient schemes for solving large sparse systems of linear equations. This monograph has three parts, each devoted to one of these three aspects of reseIVoir modeling. The text grew out of a set of lectures presented by the authors in the autumn of 1986 at the IBM Scientific Center in Bergen, Norway. We feel that it is only appropriate to caution the reader that many of the ideas that we present in this monograph do not reflect standard approaches in petroleum reseIVoir simulation. In fact, our aim is to outline promising new ways of attacking reseIVoir simulation prob lems, rather than to compile another textbook for the mainstream."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a set of two volumes covering a monograph on the current knowledge of phenomena and the theory and analysis of multiphase systems. The two books offer a systematic treatment of multiphase media which are, increasingly, the rule rather than the exception in modern industrial practice. The books offer a systematic treatment of energy, mass and momentum exchange in multiphase systems along with other applications which include shock hardening of metals, boiling heat transfer, critical flow of two-phase mixtures, combustion of fuel droplets, tertiary oil recovery and detonation of powders. The approach covers all transport processes of importance in multiphase mixtures and also covers the specific behaviour of these processes when subjected to the passage of transient waves.

Book excerpt: This book provides concise, up-to-date and easy-to-follow information on certain aspects of an ever important research area: multiphase flow in porous media. This flow type is of great significance in many petroleum and environmental engineering problems, such as in secondary and tertiary oil recovery, subsurface remediation and CO2 sequestration. This book contains a collection of selected papers (all refereed) from a number of well-known experts on multiphase flow. The papers describe both recent and state-of-the-art modeling and experimental techniques for study of multiphase flow phenomena in porous media. Specifically, the book analyses three advanced topics: upscaling, pore-scale modeling, and dynamic effects in multiphase flow in porous media. This will be an invaluable reference for the development of new theories and computer-based modeling techniques for solving realistic multiphase flow problems. Part of this book has already been published in a journal. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, researchers and consultants working in the area of flow in porous media.

Book excerpt: Multi-phase flows are part of our natural environment such as tornadoes, typhoons, air and water pollution and volcanic activities as well as part of industrial technology such as power plants, combustion engines, propulsion systems, or chemical and biological industry. The industrial use of multi-phase systems requires analytical and numerical strategies for predicting their behavior. In its fourth extended edition the successful monograph package “Multiphase Flow Daynmics” contains theory, methods and practical experience for describing complex transient multi-phase processes in arbitrary geometrical configurations, providing a systematic presentation of the theory and practice of numerical multi-phase fluid dynamics. In the present first volume the local volume and time averaging is used to derive a complete set of conservation equations for three fluids each of them having multi components as constituents. Large parts of the book are devoted on the design of successful numerical methods for solving the obtained system of partial differential equations. Finally the analysis is repeated for boundary fitted curvilinear coordinate systems designing methods applicable for interconnected multi-blocks. This fourth edition includes various updates, extensions, improvements and corrections. "The literature in the field of multiphase flows is numerous. Therefore, it is very important to have a comprehensive and systematic overview including useful numerical methods. The volumes have the character of a handbook and accomplish this function excellently. The models are described in detail and a great number of comprehensive examples and some cases useful for testing numerical solutions are included. These two volumes are very useful for scientists and practicing engineers in the fields of technical thermodynamics, chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, and for mathematicians with interest in technical problems. Besides, they can give a good overview of the dynamically developing, complex field of knowledge to students. This monograph is highly recommended.” BERND PLATZER, ZAAM In the present first volume the local volume and time averaging is used to derive a complete set of conservation equations for three fluids each of them having multi components as constituents. Book excerpt: Thanks to high-speed computers and advanced algorithms, the important field of modelling multiphase flows is an area of rapid growth. This one-stop account – now in paperback, with corrections from the first printing – is the ideal way to get to grips with this topic, which has significant applications in industry and nature. Each chapter is written by an acknowledged expert and includes extensive references to current research. All of the chapters are essentially independent and so the book can be used for a range of advanced courses and the self-study of specific topics. No other book covers so many topics related to multiphase flow, and it will therefore be warmly welcomed by researchers and graduate students of the subject across engineering, physics, and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiphase flows, which can involve compressible or incompressible linear or nonlinear, fluids, Are found in all areas of technology, at all length scales and flow regimes. In spite of their ubiquitousness, however multiphase flow continues to be one of the most challenging areas of computational mechanics and experimental methods, with numerous problems remaining unsolved to date. Because the multiphase flow problems are so complex, advanced computational and experimental methods are often required to solve the equations that describe them. The many hhallenges include modelling nonlinear fluids, modelling and tracking interfaces, dealing with multiple length scales, characterizing phase structures, and treating drop breakup and coalescence. Models must be validated, which requires the use of expensive and difficult experimental techniquess. This book presents contributions on the latest research in these techniques, presented at the sixth in a biennial series of conferences on the subject that begain in 2001. Featured topics include: Bubble and drop dynamics, Flow in porous media, Turbulent flow, Multiphase flow simulation, Image processing, Heat transfer, Interaction of gases, liquids and solids, Interface behaviour, Small scale phenomena, Atomization processes, and Liquid film behaviour.

Book excerpt: The selected papers contained in this book present the latest research in one of the most challenging, yet most universally applicable areas of technology. Multiphase flows are found in all areas of technology and the range of related problems of interest is vast, including many areas of science and engineering. Recently multiphase fluid dynamics have generated a great deal of attention, leading to many notable advances in experimental, analytical and numerical studies. It is perhaps, however, work on numerical solutions which is the most noticeable owing to the continuing improvements in computer software tools. Progress in numerical methods has permitted the solution of many practical problems, helping to improve our understanding of the physics involved. The presented papers illustrate the close interaction between numerical modellers and researchers working to gradually resolve the many outstanding issues in our understanding of multiphase flow.
