Book Synopsis Dynamics at Surfaces: Understanding Energy Dissipation and Physicochemical Processes at the Atomic and Molecular Level by : Marco Sacchi
Download or read book Dynamics at Surfaces: Understanding Energy Dissipation and Physicochemical Processes at the Atomic and Molecular Level written by Marco Sacchi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy release to solid interfaces following chemical reactions is ubiquitous in a vast range of phenomena. Energy dissipation and dynamical disorder (surface entropy), surface friction and molecular diffusion control the rates of heterogeneous catalytic reactions, the efficiency of novel technology, lubrication as well as materials growth including self-assembly and nano-structures. Yet we understand little about the underlying nature of these mechanisms. Fundamentally, energy dissipation including interactions with phonons and electron-hole pairs determines the lifetime of molecular vibrations and rotations as well as the decoherence rate of quantum states. These processes form a central point for many aspects in physical chemistry, are embedded in the mechanisms that control surface dynamical processes and are critical factors in catalysis. They are equally relevant for physicochemical processes in the Earth's atmosphere and astrochemistry occurring on cosmic dust grains.
Book Synopsis Quantum Dissipative Systems by : Ulrich Weiss
Download or read book Quantum Dissipative Systems written by Ulrich Weiss and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from first principles, this book introduces the fundamental concepts and methods of dissipative quantum mechanics and explores related phenomena in condensed matter systems. Major experimental achievements in cooperation with theoretical advances have brightened the field and brought it to the attention of the general community in natural sciences. Nowadays, working knowledge of dissipative quantum mechanics is an essential tool for many physicists. This book -- originally published in 1990 and republished in 1999 and and 2008 as enlarged second and third editions -- delves significantly deeper than ever before into the fundamental concepts, methods and applications of quantum dissipative systems. This fourth edition provides a self-contained and updated account of the quantum mechanics of open systems and offers important new material including the most recent developments. The subject matter has been expanded by about fifteen percent. Many chapters have been completely rewritten to better cater to both the needs of newcomers to the field and the requests of the advanced readership. Two chapters have been added that account for recent progress in the field. This book should be accessible to all graduate students in physics. Researchers will find this a rich and stimulating source.
Book Synopsis Dissipative Quantum Mechanics of Nanostructures by : Andrei D. Zaikin
Download or read book Dissipative Quantum Mechanics of Nanostructures written by Andrei D. Zaikin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing miniaturization of electronic devices, together with the quickly growing number of nanotechnological applications, demands a profound understanding of the underlying physics. Most of the fundamental problems of modern condensed matter physics involve various aspects of quantum transport and fluctuation phenomena at the nanoscale. In nanostructures, electrons are usually confined to a limited volume and interact with each other and lattice ions, simultaneously suffering multiple scattering events on impurities, barriers, surface imperfections, and other defects. Electron interaction with other degrees of freedom generally yields two major consequences, quantum dissipation and quantum decoherence. In other words, electrons can lose their energy and ability for quantum interference even at very low temperatures. These two different, but related, processes are at the heart of all quantum phenomena discussed in this book. This book presents copious details to facilitate the understanding of the basic physics behind a result and the learning to technically reproduce the result without delving into extra literature. The book subtly balances the description of theoretical methods and techniques and the display of the rich landscape of the physical phenomena that can be accessed by these methods. It is useful for a broad readership ranging from master’s and PhD students to postdocs and senior researchers.

Book Synopsis Dissipative Structures and Chaos by : Hazime Mori
Download or read book Dissipative Structures and Chaos written by Hazime Mori and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two parts, the first dealing with dissipative structures and the second with the structure and physics of chaos. The first part was written by Y. Kuramoto and the second part by H. Mori. Throughout the book, emphasis is laid on fundamental concepts and methods rather than applications, which are too numerous to be treated here. Typical physical examples, however, including nonlinear forced oscilla tors, chemical reactions with diffusion, and Benard convection in horizontal fluid layers, are discussed explicitly. Our consideration of dissipative structures is based on a phenomenolog ical reduction theory in which universal aspects of the phenomena under consideration are emphasized, while the theory of chaos is developed to treat transport phenomena, such as the mixing and diffusion of chaotic orbits, from the viewpoint of the geometrical phase space structure of chaos. The title of the original, Japanese version of the book is Sanitsu Kozo to Kaosu (Dissipative Structures and Chaos). It is part of the Iwanami Koza Gendai no Butsurigaku (Iwanami Series on Modern Physics). The first Japanese edition was published in March 1994 and the second in August 1997. We are pleased that this book has been translated into English and that it can now have an audience outside of Japan. We would like to express our gratitude to Glenn Paquette for his English translation, which has made this book more understandable than the original in many respects.
Book Synopsis Tubes, Sheets and Singularities in Fluid Dynamics by : K. Bajer
Download or read book Tubes, Sheets and Singularities in Fluid Dynamics written by K. Bajer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern experiments and numerical simulations show that the long-known coherent structures in turbulence take the form of elongated vortex tubes and vortex sheets. The evolution of vortex tubes may result in spiral structures which can be associated with the spectral power laws of turbulence. The mutual stretching of skewed vortex tubes, when they are close to each other, causes rapid growth of vorticity. Whether this process may or may not lead to a finite-time singularity is one of the famous open problems of fluid dynamics. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO ARW and IUTAM Symposium held in Zakopane, Poland, 2-7 September 2001. The papers presented, carefully reviewed by the International Scientific Committee, cover various aspects of the dynamics of vortex tubes and sheets and of their analogues in magnetohydrodynamics and in quantum turbulence. The book should be a useful reference for all researchers and students of modern fluid dynamics.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena and Quantum Dissipation by : A. O. Caldeira
Download or read book An Introduction to Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena and Quantum Dissipation written by A. O. Caldeira and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing macroscopic quantum phenomena and quantum dissipation, from the phenomenology of magnetism and superconductivity to the presentation of alternative models for quantum dissipation, this book develops the basic material necessary to understand the quantum dynamics of macroscopic variables. Macroscopic quantum phenomena are presented through several examples in magnetism and superconductivity, developed from general phenomenological approaches to each area. Dissipation naturally plays an important role in these phenomena, and therefore semi-empirical models for quantum dissipation are introduced and applied to the study of a few important quantum mechanical effects. The book also discusses the relevance of macroscopic quantum phenomena to the control of meso- or nanoscopic devices, particularly those with potential applications in quantum computation or quantum information. It is ideal for graduate students and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One common feature of new emerging technologies is the fusion of the very small (nano) scale and the large scale engineering. The classical environment provided by single scale theories, as for instance by the classical hydrodynamics, is not anymore satisfactory. The main challenge is to keep the important details while still be able to keep the overall picture and simplicity. It is the thermodynamics that addresses this challenge. Our main reason for writing this book is to explain such general viewpoint of thermodynamics and to illustrate it on a very wide range of examples. Book Synopsis Structure-preserving Integrators in Nonlinear Structural Dynamics and Flexible Multibody Dynamics by : Peter Betsch
Download or read book Structure-preserving Integrators in Nonlinear Structural Dynamics and Flexible Multibody Dynamics written by Peter Betsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on structure-preserving numerical methods for flexible multibody dynamics, including nonlinear elastodynamics and geometrically exact models for beams and shells. It also deals with the newly emerging class of variational integrators as well as Lie-group integrators. It discusses two alternative approaches to the discretization in space of nonlinear beams and shells. Firstly, geometrically exact formulations, which are typically used in the finite element community and, secondly, the absolute nodal coordinate formulation, which is popular in the multibody dynamics community. Concerning the discretization in time, the energy-momentum method and its energy-decaying variants are discussed. It also addresses a number of issues that have arisen in the wake of the structure-preserving discretization in space. Among them are the parameterization of finite rotations, the incorporation of algebraic constraints and the computer implementation of the various numerical methods. The practical application of structure-preserving methods is illustrated by a number of examples dealing with, among others, nonlinear beams and shells, large deformation problems, long-term simulations and coupled thermo-mechanical multibody systems. In addition it links novel time integration methods to frequently used methods in industrial multibody system simulation.

Book Synopsis Fluid Dynamics in Biology by : Angela Y. Cheer
Download or read book Fluid Dynamics in Biology written by Angela Y. Cheer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains nearly all the papers presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Biofluiddynamics, held in July 1991, at the University of Washington, Seattle. The lead paper, by Sir James Lighthill, presents a comprehensive review of external flows in biology. The other papers on external and internal flows illuminate developments in the protean field of biofluiddynamics from diverse viewpoints, reflecting the field's multidisciplinary nature. For this reason, the book appeals to mathematicians, biologists, engineers, physiologists, cardiologists, and oceanographers. The papers highlight a number of problems that have remained largely unexplored due to the difficulty of addressing biological flow motions, which are often governed by large systems of nonlinear differential equations and involve complex geometries. However, recent advances in computational fluid dynamics have expanded opportunities to solve such problems. These developments have increased interest in areas such as the mechanisms of blood and air flow in humans, the dynamic ecology of the oceans, animal swimming and flight, to name a few. This volume addresses many of these flow problems.
