Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book celebrates a decade for this popular series on dynamics in small confining systems. The book covers a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, polymers and membranes, dielectric relaxation and biological aspects. Participants from various disciplines share different points of view on the questions of how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfacial science has rapidly expanded beyond the original realm of chemistry to include physics, mechanical and chemical engineering, biology, materials science, and other specialized subfields. This book in a series from MRS emphasizes the effects of confinement on the physical and chemical properties of equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems. Of particular interest is the question of how nearby surfaces or ultra-small geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different than it behaves in bulk. Theoretical, experimental and computational evidence of the effects of confinement on gaseous, liquid and solid systems is presented. Topics include: probing confined systems; structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces; nanorheology and tribology; adsorption; diffusion in porous systems and reaction dynamics.

Book excerpt: The mechanical properties of small volumes of materials (such as thin films and patterned structures) can be very different from larger volumes, especially in the area of dislocation behavior. This text contains a selection of 31 papers from the April 2001 symposium devoted to new methods of dislocation modeling. Topics include mechanisms of plastic deformation in heteroepitaxial, multilayered, and polycrystalline thin films; as well as in 3D mesostructures such as epitaxial islands, semiconducting devices, and microcrystallites. The organizers of the symposium had the particular aim of stimulating exchange between experimental work, theoretical modeling, and numerical simulations. This book was released on 2001-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like earlier books in the series, this collection of papers, first published in 2001, brings together the materials science community and the characterization techniques that use synchrotron radiation. Surfaces, interfaces, electronic materials, thin films, carbides, polymers and alloys are all addressed. And while the editors did not anticipate that the cluster of papers treating cementitious materials would necessitate a separate section, it is interesting to see the application of cutting-edge techniques to Portland cement, a very complex materials system long used in engineering structures. Topics include: X-ray diffraction - structures and transformations; X-ray diffraction - stress, strain and texture; microtomography and microdiffraction; SR methods applied to cementitious materials; magnetic materials; X-ray absorption and photoemission; and X-ray scattering and interfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid-state chemistry is an interdisciplinary field, and these researchers share the common challenge of understanding, controlling, and predicting the structures and properties of solids at the atomic level. This book provides a forum for the presentation of recent advances in the solid-state chemistry of inorganic materials and the impact of these advances on the development of practical applications. Topics include: crystal chemistry of complex systems; dielectrics, crystal chemistry, glasses and electrical transport; transport properties/metal-insulator systems; magnetism and manganates; new materials - meso/nanoporous materials; micro/meso/ nanoporous materials - inorganic/organic hybrids; synthesis, new methods and new materials; solid-state ionics, battery materials, thermopower and optical materials; solid-state ionics, battery materials and energy storage; and thermopower, themal expansion and optical materials. A highlight is a section dedicated to Professor J.M. Honig in recognition of his many contributions to the discipline of solid-state chemistry and his stewardship of the Journal of Solid-State Chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on materials issues related to Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 and CdTe-based polycrystalline thin-film photovoltaic solar cells and related oxides and chalcogenides. Phase equilibrium and thermochemical kinetic aspects of the absorber layer formation of CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 are emphasized and several papers on micro-analytical analysis report on detailed structural properties of thin films. The use of flexible plastic or metal foil substrates as an alternative to glass is addressed in terms of solar-cell performance and limitations imposed by the nature of the substrates. Properties of defects and interfaces in CdTe and CIGSS are highlighted using electrical, optical, and micro-analytical tools. While film properties are correlated to device physics, controversy still exists on the detailed operation of both CdTe and CIGSS devices. Topics include: materials and synthesis; thin films on alternate substrates; defects; growth and junction formation; surfaces and interfaces and film and device characterization.
