Book excerpt: "Dynamic Thought; Or, The Law of Vibrant Energy" by William Walker Atkinson is a book about the odd union of ancient occult teachings to the most advanced and latest concepts of modern science. The book discusses higher levels of thinking and development, completely separate planes of the mind, and how natural forces and the law of attraction can influence our actions or how anyone acts toward us. This book, like much of his work, is intended for students of philosophical and psychological thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic Thought by William Walker Atkinson This is a queer book. It is a marriage of the Ancient Occult Teachings to the latest and most advanced conceptions of Modern Science—an odd union, for the parties thereto are of entirely different temperaments. The marriage might be expected to result disastrously, were it not for the fact that a connecting link has been found that gives them a bond of common interest. No two people may truly love each other, unless they also love something in common—the more they love in common, the greater will be their love for each other. And, let us trust that this will prove true in this marriage of Occultism and Science, celebrated in this book. The Occultists usually get at the "facts," first, but they manage to evolve such outrageous theories to explain the facts, that the world will have none of their wares, and turns to Science for something "reasonable." Science, proceeding along different lines, at first denies these "facts" of the Occultists, not finding them accounted for by any of her existing theories; but, later on, when the "facts" have been finally thrust under her eyes, after repeated attempts and failures, she says, "Oh, yes, of course!" and proceeds to evolve a new theory, welding it with other scientific hypotheses, and after attaching a new label thereto, she proudly exhibits the thing as "the latest discovery of Modern Science"—and smiles indulgently, or indignantly, when the theory of the old Occultists is mentioned, saying, "Quite a different thing, we assure you!" And yet, in all justice, be it said, Science usually proceeds to find much better "proofs" to fit the "facts" of Occultism, than did the Occultists themselves. The Occultist "sees things," but is a poor hand at "proofs"—while the Scientist is great on "proofs," but so often, and so long, fails to see many things patent to the Occultist who is able to "look within" himself, but who is then unable to positively and scientifically "prove" the facts. This is easily explained—the Occultist's information comes from "within," while the Scientist's comes from without—and "proofs" belong to the "without" side of Mentation. And this is why the Occultists so often make such a bungle regarding "proofs" and the Scientist fails to see "facts" that are staring the Occultist in the face. The whole history of Occultism and Science proves the above. Take the phenomenon called "Mesmerism" for instance—it was an old story with the Occultists, who had been for years aware of it, theoretically and practically. Mesmer brought it into general prominence, and Science laughed at it and at Mesmer's "fluid" theory, and called him a charlatan and imposter. Years afterwards, Braid, an English surgeon, discovered that some of the facts of "Mesmerism" were true, and he announced his discovery in a scientific manner, and lo! his views were accepted, and the thing was called "Hypnotism," poor old Mesmer being forgotten, because of his theory. Then, after a number of years, certain other aspects of the phenomenon were discovered, and scientifically relabelled "Suggestion," and the re-naming was supposed to "explain" the entire subject, the learned ones now saying, "Pooh, 'tis nothing but 'Suggestion,'" as if that explained the matter. But so far, they have only accepted certain phases of this form of Dynamic Thought—for that is what it is, and there are many other phases of which they do not dream.

Atkinson, takes relatively modern science alongside ancient occult teachings to discuss subjects often presented in Atkinson's magazine New Thought, and in many of the other books Atkinson authored. Dynamic Thought presents the ideas of a higher level of thinking and functioning, separate planes of the mind, and how forces in nature and the law of attraction can affect our actions, or the way others act toward us. Like much of his work, this book is designed for the student of psychological and philosophical thought. American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932) was editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books under numerous pseudonyms, including "Yogi," some of which are likely still unknown today.

Book excerpt: This premium quality edition includes the complete text of William Walker Atkinson's classic "universal cosmic mind" text in a freshly edited and newly typeset edition. With a generous 6" x 9" page size, this Summit Classic Press edition is printed on heavyweight 60# bright white paper with a fully laminated cover featuring an original full color design. Also included is a new, original biographical sketch discussing the author and his work. In Dynamic Thought William Walker Atkinson sets out a theory to reconcile the "realities" of science with the "realities" of the mystic view of the oneness of the universe, demonstrating the similarities that lay at the root of the efforts of both schools of thought to explain the universe as humans perceive it, providing a framework for understanding many of the phenomena which science can not explain, but which have long been recognized by occultists and mystics and, in more recent times, paranormal researchers: ...The reader will see, readily, that this theory of Dynamic Thought, and the facts noted in the consideration thereof, give an intelligent explanation for the respective phenomena of Hypnotism, Mesmerism, Suggestion, Thought-transference, Telepathy, etc., as well as of Mental Healing, Magnetic Healing, etc., all of which are manifestations of "Dynamic Thought." Not only do we see ... that "Thoughts are Things," but we may see "just why" they are Things. And we may see and understand the laws of their production and operation. ... The very existence of "paranormal psychology" and "paranormal research" in scientific circles today bears out Atkinson's prediction that science would one day, slowly, begin to explore the concept of the "cosmic mind" or "universal mind," by which he means a force, as opposed to a substance, surrounding and connecting everything and everyone in the universe. While science, in Atkinson's day, still clung to the concept of "the ether" to explain the mysterious "something" that clearly filled the "void" between physical objects, but could not be measured or observed, today "dark matter" fills a similar role in scientific theory, an undefined "something" that can explain the otherwise scientifically inexplicable. In Atkinson's theory, this undefined "something" is not an inert physical substance, but rather a universal force or energy which encompasses "thought" as we know it but is a far more complex universal phenomenon than mere conscious human thought. It is the concept of this universal consciousness, or cosmic mind, at work in a multitude of manifestations, which forms the basis for Atkinson's theory of what he calls "Dynamic Thought." Atkinson's work provides a useful, accessible guide to the concept of a universal consciousness, sometimes called "the universal mind" or the "cosmic mind" which is common to both eastern mystic and religious thought and the more westernized doctrine of theosophy. William Walker Atkinson (1862-1932) was an incredibly prolific American writer, also widely known by his pseudonym, "Yogi Ramacharaka,"who published extensively in areas of yoga, the occult, eastern mysticism, personal development, and related subjects. A successful businessman and attorney, Atkinson suffered what may have been a nervous breakdown in the late 1880's and, in the course of his recovery, became immersed in the "new thought" movement, eastern mysticism, and yoga. Atkinson was a popular self-improvement and personal development writer, a leading voice in the New Thought movement and a serious and devoted student of Hindu philosophy and yoga, and was a major force in introducing these concepts to the United States. His writings are still widely read and well-respected, and his "Yoga Philosophy and Oriental Occultism" is considered an excellent basic text for the western layman.

It is a marriage of the Ancient Occult Teachings to the latest and most advanced conceptions of Modern Science--an odd union, for the parties thereto are of entirely different temperaments. The marriage might be expected to result disastrously, were it not for the fact that a connecting link has been found that gives them a bond of common interest. No two people may truly love each other, unless they also love something in common--the more they love in common, the greater will be their love for each other. And, let us trust that this will prove true in this marriage of Occultism and Science, celebrated in this book."William Atkinson published this book at the beginning of the 1900s. This was a vibrant time in the physical sciences. Albert Einstein was working on his Special Theory of Relativity, Marie Curie had won a Nobel Prize for her work in vibrant energy, which she coined radioactivity. A few years later, Neils Bohr won a Nobel Prize for discovering the structure of the atom. Many others, like Max Planck, Enrico Fermi, and others were discovering what Transcendentalist had known for over 5,000 years. They couldn't it prove mathematically, so their ideas were never accepted. This may be about to change. Today, the physicists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research C.E.R.N have rebuilt their accelerator making it more powerful, now that the God particle has been found and the standard model completed. They are searching for even smaller energy particles like Mr. Atkinsons' vibrant energy. I believe that they will find the vibrant energies that Mr. Atkins describes, which are used to manifest the mystical arts. If so, not only will our world view be changed forever, but a new era of peace and prosperity will issue forth. The Scientists will say they discovered a new energy. You and I will know that they really only rediscovered a vibrant energy that the Transcendentalist had known and used for thousands of years. Perhaps the long engagement between Occultism and Science is over and marriage plans can begin.

These techniques still form the basis of the teachings of many of today's Success "Gurus" as they reveal supposedly "new" secrets to getting what you want in life. The truth is that the Universal Laws are exactly the same now as they were at the dawn of consciousness - there is nothing new about any of them, and any method that has ever worked for coming into harmony with them will always work.
