Elastic optical networks (EONs) are promising optical backbone network candidates to satisfy these new challenges. Based on optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) technology, elastic optical networks support different high line rates beyond 100 Gb/s, while achieving higher spectrum resource efficiency. Furthermore, in elastic optical networks, we can use different modulation formats such as DP-BPSK, DP-QPSK, and DP-16-QAM to set up lightpath connections so as to raise spectrum resource utilization. In this dissertation, in terms of different traffic demands, we study the problem of routing, modulation and spectrum assignment (RMSA) in elastic optical networks. First, we study the routing, modulation and spectrum assignment problem for holding-time-aware network requests. In elastic optical networks, for each line rate request with certain holding time, we need to allocate enough spectrum resource to satisfy the requirement. We divide the requests into two types, those that include immediate reservation (IR) requests and those with advance reservation (AR) requests. In terms of different requests, we design different heuristic algorithms to satisfy their requirement. Second, spectrum fragmentation in elastic optical networks is another important issue that we need to consider. When we set up and tear down lightpath connections in EONs, the spectrum resource will be fragmented, which decreases spectrum resource utilization. In this work, we mainly consider two types of fragmentation including spectrum fragmentation and time fragmentation. We design fragmentation-aware routing, modulation and spectrum assignment algorithms to proactively prevent spectrum fragments. Third, large data-flow transfer is a big challenge for elastic optical networks. Data-flow transfer such as data backup and data migration grow exponentially among datacenters. Hence, we study how to transfer fixed data amount in a certain time domain. A dynamic routing, modulation and spectrum assignment algorithm is designed to meet data-flow transfer in elastic optical networks. Finally, the survivability problem for data-flow transfer plays a vital role in elastic optical inter-datacenter networks. Man-made errors and uncontrollable natural disaster will result in a huge data loss. In order to meet service level agreement (SLA), we need to set up a protection lightpath connection for each data-flow transfer. In this dissertation, we design survivable bulk data-flow transfer strategies for each data-flow transfer.

Book excerpt: Elastic Optical Networks (EON) is widely accepted today as the next step in the evolution toward high capacity networking. The idea behind it is to optimize the use of resources by flexibly assigning spectrum, data rate and modulation format adapted to the needs of the end-to-end connection requests. This book is devoted to the study of three important issues in EONs, 1) dynamic source aggregation of sub-wavelength connections, 2) correlation between traffic granularity and defragmentation periodicity and 3) using spectrum fragmentation to better allocate time-varying connections.

Book excerpt: This book provides a timely and comprehensive study of dynamic resource management for network slicing in service-oriented fifth-generation (5G) and beyond core networks. This includes the perspective of developing efficient computation resource provisioning and scheduling solutions to guarantee consistent service performance in terms of end-to-end (E2E) data delivery delay. Network slicing is enabled by the software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) paradigms. For a network slice with a target traffic load, the E2E service delivery is enabled by virtual network function (VNF) placement and traffic routing with static resource allocations. When data traffic enters the network, the traffic load is dynamic and can deviate from the target value, potentially leading to QoS performance degradation and network congestion. Data traffic has dynamics in different time granularities. For example, the traffic statistics (e.g., mean and variance) can be non-stationary and experience significant changes in a coarse time granularity, which are usually predictable. Within a long time duration with stationary traffic statistics, there are traffic dynamics in small timescales, which are usually highly bursty and unpredictable. To provide continuous QoS performance guarantee and ensure efficient and fair operation of the network slices over time, it is essential to develop dynamic resource management schemes for the embedded services in the presence of traffic dynamics during virtual network operation. Queueing theory is used in system modeling, and different techniques including optimization and machine learning are applied to solving the dynamic resource management problems. Based on a simplified M/M/1 queueing model with Poisson traffic arrivals, an optimization model for flow migration is presented to accommodate the large-timescale changes in the average traffic rates with average E2E delay guarantee, while addressing a trade-off between load balancing and flow migration overhead. To overcome the limitations of Poisson traffic model, the authors present a machine learning approach for dynamic VNF resource scaling and migration. The new solution captures the inherent traffic patterns in a real-world traffic trace with non-stationary traffic statistics in large timescale, predicts resource demands for VNF resource scaling, and triggers adaptive VNF migration decision making, to achieve load balancing, migration cost reduction, and resource overloading penalty suppression in the long run. Both supervised and unsupervised machine learning tools are investigated for dynamic resource management. To accommodate the traffic dynamics in small time granularities, the authors present a dynamic VNF scheduling scheme to coordinate the scheduling among VNFs of multiple services, which achieves network utility maximization with delay guarantee for each service. Researchers and graduate students working in the areas of electrical engineering, computing engineering and computer science will find this book useful as a reference or secondary text. Professionals in industry seeking solutions to dynamic resource management for 5G and beyond networks will also want to purchase this book.

In this thesis, we have evaluated and compared several algorithms for dynamic scheduling of lightpaths using a flexible advance reservation model. The main aim is to find the best scheduling policy that improves network utilization and minimizes blocking. The scheduling of lightpaths involve both routing and wavelength assignment. Our simulation results show that minimum cost adaptive routing where link costs are determined by the current and future usage of the link provides the minimum blocking. Moreover, searching for k alternate paths within the scheduling window significantly improves the performance. For wavelength assignment, we have used a scheme that reduces fragmentation by minimizing unused leading or trailing gaps. We have also analyzed approaches for failure recovery and lightpath re-optimization. Finally, an advance reservation scheme needs timely information regarding the status of the optical links. To this end, we have surveyed various monitoring tools and techniques and we have proposed a monitoring framework to support fast restoration.

Book excerpt: With the provisioning of network equipment becoming increasingly challenging due to the large number of application types that must be supported at once, it is generally expected that cloud based applications are going to experience improved end-to-end performance assurance while maintaining a competitive cost of service. Most applications must make use of various types of resources, including network bandwidth and server CPU cycles, among others. An application request may be blocked when one or more of the resource types that are required to achieve the desired QoS cannot be reserved due to their shortage. Elastic Optical Networks (EONs) enable optical circuits to be assigned distinct numbers of spectrum slices. Individual circuits can then be assigned an optimal number of slices to best match their target transmission rates. A well-known drawback of EONs is spectrum fragmentation and its resulting uneven blocking probability, which circuit requests experience when the available spectrum slices in the fiber are insufficient or not contiguous. Capturing this spectrum fragmentation problem analytically is a challenging problem. Not surprisingly, most of the existing studies at this time mainly use simulation-based techniques to quantify blocking probability in EONs. This dissertation proposes a Markov Chain (MC) model first to efficiently and accurately estimate the blocking probability caused by the multi-application and multi-resource (MA-MR) constraint. The strength of the model is its scalability and ability to account for hundreds of application types concurrently sharing multiple pools of distinct resources. Then a Steady State Probability (SSP) policy which is built upon this analytical MC model and a Network State (NS) policy are considered and proposed for joint allocation of network link and data center resources in the presence of dynamic application requests. The SSP policy is based on pre-computed probability to select data center and network resources and the NS policy is based on the knowledge of the network and data center state. An algorithm for optimally computing the probabilities based on the SSP policy is presented. Obtained simulation results demonstrate and numerically assess the trade-off between the system performance in terms of blocking probability and the signaling overhead. In order to quantify blocking probability theoretically in EONs, two Markov Chain (MC) models are presented to characterize the fragmentation problem in a simplified scenario, i.e., only two types of circuit services are allowed over a single fiber link, which is mentioned as two-service spectrum-elastic optical fiber link. One is an approximation model which is more effective and easier to be implemented based on the fully-shared fiber spectrum and then it is extended to account for partially-shared fiber spectrum. The other is an accurate model which is remarkably accurate to capture the fragmentation. The initial analytical efforts are able to capture the non-monotonic behavior of the blocking probability in EONs. Two product form based on analytical models are finally presented for quantifying blocking probability in a two-service elastic fiber link effectively. There is a trade-off between the accuracy and the model complexity.
