It is assumed that the stiffeners are spaced sufficiently close so that their properties can be averaged out. The equations of motion of the structure is determined by using a nonlinear orthotropic shell theory of the Karman-Tsien type. An approximate deflection function with time-dependent coefficients is assumed and a Ritz-Galerkin procedure applied to yield four coupled, nonlinear differential equations. These equations are solved numerically for an applied axial compressive load. A dynamic buckling instability criterion is established. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations dealing with the buckling of thin cylindrical and conical shells subject to axial impact are described. The studies consisted of experimental and theoretical efforts directed toward obtaing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the dynamic buckling behavior of such shells under a variety of conditions. The conditions studied include different longitudinal conditions imposed on the impacted end of the shell and internal pressurization. In addition, methods of increasing the specific energy dissipation capacity of shells subject to axial impact were studied. A number of interesting results were obtained. It was demonstrated experimentally that buckling of a cylindrical shell is initiated during the first passage of the axial compression stress wave due to the initial impact when the impact velocity is sufficiently high. Another significant experimental result obtained is that the asymmetrical (quasi-developable) form of shell buckling occurs as a result of a smooth transition from the symmetrical ("ring") form of bucklingin some thin cylindrical shells subjected to an axially symmetric axial impact. Analytical subject to a constant velocity end displacement. The method utilizes the finite deflection theory and is a refinement of the procedure due to A.S. Volmir. It shows that both the upper critical stress and the number of circumferential waves increase and the time to initiate buckling decreases with increasing velocity of impact. These trends are in agreement with the analytical results of Volmir and a phenomenological theory due to Coppa.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers, written by friends and colleagues of Josef Singer, presents a comprehensive and timely review of the theoretical mechanics of thin shell-structures. Topics of great current interest such as the buckling of composite plates and shells, the plastic buckling of thin-walled structures and the optimum design of buckling sensitive curved composite panels are examined by experts, using a great diversity of approaches, whereby theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results whenever possible.Other topics reviewed include the buckling and post-buckling behaviour of imperfect shells under different external static or dynamic loads and a variety of boundary conditions. Papers dealing with the vibration and the dynamic response of thin elastic bodies are also presented.A strong emphasis is made on the practical applications aspect in the theories presented. Thus engineers, research workers and students who are involved with the design and analysis of shell structures made of different materials, and subjected to various static and dynamic loads will find this volume an invaluable source of reference.

Book excerpt: Dynamical motions of a circular cylindrical thin shell simply supported at one end and free to expand in the circumferential and radial direction at the other end are studied under the condition of axial impact. The axial compressions applied exceed the static buckling loads. As the initial conditions, the displacement field and velocity field of circumferential and radial directions are assumed to vanish except the initial axial velocity field of the cylinder. In order to account for the effect of plasticity (without unloading) on buckling, the second order elastic stress-strain relations are used with simplifications that the effect of the initial axial load on the bending moment is constant. The displacement and stress fields are obtained by solving the dynamical equations of motions under the boundary and initial conditions. The shortening of the shell at any time and the classical static buckling, including the plastic effect, are determined. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the axial buckling load of cylinders formed by a process of plastic expansion due to internal pressure. Test cylinders 21.6 cm in diameter, 0.330 mm thick, were formed by plastic expansion from 15.23 cm diameter commercial, welded, type 304 stainless steel tubing. Buckling loads from 50 to 71 percent of the classical value showed a definite relationship with the local decrease in curvature due to the worst imperfections. Buckling loads were substantially higher than expected in relation to the amplitude of their geometric imperfections. The results indicate that the process of plastic expansion may provide a means of producing certain types of cylinders of unusually high buckling load at low cost.

Book excerpt: A solution for the plastic buckling of eccentrically stiffened cylinders is derived by use of the J2 deformation theory of plasticity for a set of simply supported edge boundary conditions. The uniaxial character of the stiffeners and the stiffener eccentricity (asymmetry about the cylinder middle surface) ae explicitly accounted for as is a variable Poisson's ratio in the plastic region. A closed-form stability criterion is obtained for axial compression, lateral pressure, and hydrostatic pressure loadings. The present results are more realistic for most practical stiffened cylinders than an existing solution in which an orthotropic shell model is used. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effect of plastic action on the buckling load of a typical aerospace structure. The FORTRAN IV computer program is described and listed. (Author).

Book excerpt: A transcendental stability criterion is derived for plastic buckling of eccentrically stiffened circular cylindrical shells with multiple isotropic layers under combinations of axial and lateral pressure (including one component of pressure which causes tension). The deformation theory of plasticity is utilized in conjunction with classical stability theory, which implies a membrane prebuckled shape, for a set of simply supported edge boundary conditions. The uniaxial character of the stiffeners and their eccentricity (asymmetry about the reference surface) are accounted for as are variable Poisson's ratios above the yield stress (proportional limit). The technique of applying this type of stability criterion is discussed for the first time and includes new procedures required for multilayered shells. Numerical examples are given to illustrate application of the theory. The associated FORTRAN IV computer program is described and listed. (Author).
