Book excerpt: For spontaneously breathing patients on ventilatory support, the estimation of the lung parameters is challenging due to the added patient's breathing effort. This dissertation presents a model-based nonlinear constrained optimization algorithm to estimate, breath-by-breath, the lung resistance, the lung compliance, as well as the patient breathing effort due to the respiratory muscle activity, using readily available non-invasive measurements (airway opening pressure and airflow).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Respiratory System combines emerging ideas from biology and mathematics to show the reader how to produce models for the development of biomedical engineering applications associated with the lungs and airways. Mathematically mature but in its infancy as far as engineering uses are concerned, fractional calculus is the basis of the methods chosen for system analysis and modelling. This reflects two decades’ worth of conceptual development which is now suitable for bringing to bear in biomedical engineering. The text reveals the latest trends in modelling and identification of human respiratory parameters with a view to developing diagnosis and monitoring technologies. Of special interest is the notion of fractal structure which is indicative of the large-scale biological efficiency of the pulmonary system. The related idea of fractal dimension represents the adaptations in fractal structure caused by environmental factors, notably including disease. These basics are linked to model the dynamical patterns of breathing as a whole. The ideas presented in the book are validated using real data generated from healthy subjects and respiratory patients and rest on non-invasive measurement methods. The Human Respiratory System will be of interest to applied mathematicians studying the modelling of biological systems, to clinicians with interests outside the traditional borders of medicine, and to engineers working with technologies of either direct medical significance or for mitigating changes in the respiratory system caused by, for example, high-altitude or deep-sea environments.

Book excerpt: A dynamic model of human respiratory mechanics is developed to aid in the design and development of pressure-compensated oxygen masks worn by combat aircrew. Breathing models of varying complexity are formulated using the bond graph method to convey key elements of the system. A simple respiratory mask model containing inhalation and exhalation check valves is combined with the respiratory mechanics model. The system state equations are derived for each of the models presented and constitutive relations are described. Numerical solution of the system state equations is shown to capture dissipative and energy storage effects in respiratory tract and compliant elements of the system. The inclusion of air flow inertance in the model is shown to simplify the state equations by eliminating a non-linear algebraic loop. Respiratory mask performance metrics are presented and results from several case studies with variations in the lung characteristics and breathing scenarios are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in predicting key physiological measures, reported in the form of flow-volume loops, work of breathing, and mask cavity pressures

Book excerpt: The main objective of this book 'Design and Analysis of the Mathematical Model for Human Respiratory System's is to provide a method for identification of the changes in human respiratory system in order to allow for an instantaneous diagnosis of the disease such as asthma by the medical staff. The present work provides a methodology for auto regressive exogenous (ARX) modelling of human respiratory system for determining proper model structure and thereafter model parameters. Estimated model parameters will reflect the dynamic changes in respiratory system so the differences between normal and disease person can be detected using this mode

Book excerpt: A model is a very helpful tool to describe, interpret and explain the behaviour of a highly complex system such as the human respiratory system. The research work presented in this thesis is concerned with the development of a nonlinear dynamic simulation model of the respiratory control system in human subjects for exercise conditions. Modelling the respiratory system is not a new activity but the development of a general model that takes into account the conditions above the lactate threshold has not been attempted previously because of a number of problems that arise for these particular operating conditions. Many variables become increasingly non linear in terms of their temporal pattern and magnitudes. Also metabolic acidosis, which is negligible below the lactate threshold, cannot be neglected for exercise conditions that take the system above the lactate threshold. The current work has established a general model that applies for exercise conditions below and above the lactate threshold. The model takes into account the factor of metabolic acidosis, which is calculated by estimating the production and consumption of lactate in body tissues and its kinetics in the blood. The slow component increase of muscle energetics and O2 extraction is also considered. Well established algorithms are employed to estimate the O2 and CO2 dissociation curves and the Siggaard-Andersen nomogram is used to calculate blood pH. The model is able to reproduce the main features of the system response in terms of ventilation and pulmonary gas exchange during moderate and heavy exercise. It is also able to reproduce the characteristics of several blood quantities including arterial gas partial pressures, arterial O2 and CO2 concentrations, mixed-venous and arterial pH and also lactate and bicarbonate concentrations. Potential applications of the model include describing the contribution of haemoglobin to performance in exercise conditions, estimating how cardiac output should change during heavy exercise, describing the effect of acidosis, and describing the changes of body CO2 stores during exercise. Assumptions, limitations and procedures for testing and evaluating the model are discussed, along with suggestions for further developments that could lead to possible improvements of the model and thus to an extension of the range of problems to which the model could be applied.

Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes theoretical and practical aspects of both the mathematical and life science viewpoints needed for modeling of the cardiovascular-respiratory system specifically and physiological systems generally. Theoretical points include model design, model complexity and validation in the light of available data, as well as control theory approaches to feedback delay and Kalman filter applications to parameter identification. State of the art approaches using parameter sensitivity are discussed for enhancing model identifiability through joint analysis of model structure and data. Practical examples illustrate model development at various levels of complexity based on given physiological information. The sensitivity-based approaches for examining model identifiability are illustrated by means of specific modeling examples. The themes presented address the current problem of patient-specific model adaptation in the clinical setting, where data is typically limited.

Book excerpt: The awareness is growing of health hazards and pharmaceutical benefits of micro-/nano-aerosol particles which are mostly nonspherical and hygroscopic, and categorized as "unconventional" vs. solid spheres. Accurate and realistic numerical models will significantly contribute to answering public health questions. In this chapter, fundamentals and future trends of computational fluid-particle dynamics (CFPD) models for lung aerosol dynamics are discussed, emphasizing the underlying physics to simulate unconventional inhaled aerosols such as fibers, droplets, and vapors. Standard simulation procedures are presented, including reconstruction of the human respiratory system, CFPD model formulation, finite-volume mesh generation, et cetera Case studies for fiber and droplet transport and deposition in lung are also provided. Furthermore, challenges and future directions are discussed to develop next-generation models. The ultimate goal is to establish a roadmap to link different numerical models, and to build the framework of a new multiscale numerical model, which will extend exposure and lung deposition predictions to health endpoints, e.g., tissue and delivered doses, by calculating absorption and translocation into alveolar regions and systemic regions using discrete element method (DEM), lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), and/or physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. It will enable simulations of extremely complex airflow-vapor-particle-structure dynamics in the entire human respiratory system at detailed levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes an introduction to the mathematical modeling of the respiratory system. A detailed introduction on the physiological aspects makes it accessible to a large audience without any prior knowledge on the lung. Different levels of description are proposed, from the lumped models with a small number of parameters (Ordinary Differential Equations), up to infinite dimensional models based on Partial Differential Equations. Besides these two types of differential equations, two chapters are dedicated to resistive networks, and to the way they can be used to investigate the dependence of the resistance of the lung upon geometrical characteristics. The theoretical analysis of the various models is provided, together with state-of-the-art techniques to compute approximate solutions, allowing comparisons with experimental measurements. The book contains several exercises, most of which are accessible to advanced undergraduate students.
