Book excerpt: The objective of this dissertation was to study energy utilization by cattle using quantitative approaches. In the first chapter, several optimization models were presented and described mathematically. The potential use of these models in diet formulation and in the minimization of environmental impacts of livestock production was discussed. Further, a linear programming model to examine methane emission regulatory policies in a hypothetical dairy herd was decribed in detail. In chapter two, a weighted goal programming optimization model was developed to simultaneously minimize diet costs and methane emissions. A strategy based on the systematic variation of the objective function weights was proposed for the construction of the set of feasible solutions. The mitigation costs, representing the change in dietary costs associated with a unit reduction in methane emissions, were determined using feed prices and dairies from the Central Valley in California. In the third chapter, linear hierarchical models were developed to predict methane emissions from several cattle categories. A large database of indirect calorimetry was used to select, fit and evaluate models of different complexity levels. Bayesian techniques were implemented for robust model selection and fitting resulting in substantial reductions of prediction errors from the extant models in the literature. The last two chapters examined utilization of metabolizable energy by growing and lactating cattle. In chapter four, parametric and nonparametric Bayesian hierarchical models were developed to model energy retention and heat production as a function of metabolizable energy intake. The nonparametric model estimates maintenance requirements and energetic efficiencies without specifying a particular functional form for the relationship between dependent and independent variables. The biological and mathematical assumptions behind the estimation of energetic parameters for each model were comprehensively described. In the last chapter univariate and multivariate hierarchical models were used to estimate maintenance requirements and the partial efficiencies of utilizing dietary energy for milk production and tissue gain. The multivariate model was formulated with structural equations respecting the biological principles governing mutually interactive energy traits. The models were used to demonstrate that maintenance requirements and the efficiencies of utilizing dietary energy increased in contemporary Northern American milk production systems. Canonical correlation analysis suggested that changes in dietary composition and genetic selection for milk production may have altered these energetic parameters over the past five decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergetics is an emerging discipline which offers a more profound understanding of the ecology, behaviour, and evolution of wild herbivores. Increasingly, bioenergetic principles have been applied in management since they provide insight into population dynamics and are relevant to manipulation of habitats and assessment of the impacts of resource development. Growing interest in the agricultural potential of wild herbivores has provided further impetus. In spite of this promise, there are few comprehensive syntheses of the concept and its application to wild herbivores. This volume attempts to fill this need. This book provides a great amount of detail but its expressive aim is to lead us to the whole animal, to a herd, to population as integral parts of an ecological entity which in turn is the result of evolutionary forces. The concept of this book promises the realization of an overdue change in the approach to bioenergetics, to nutrition and husbandry, and thus to the management of wild herbivores: the final emancipation from rules and views based primarily on domesticated herbivores or on experimental animals held under unnatural conditions, necessarily impending them behaviourally, physically, and psychically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy and Protein Metabolism and Nutrition is of increasing importance as greater efficiency and health benefits are sought in feed for animal production. Top scientists from around the world have collaborated in this book to exchange expertise and knowledge on the latest developments in the field. The topics range from tissue metabolism and regulation mechanisms to practical aspects of energy and protein nutrition and feeding. A better and deeper understanding of nutrient metabolism and nutrition can only be achieved by integrating the outcomes of scientists researching different aspects of this topic. In doing this practical outcomes are sought for the direct benefit of producers and consumers. Special topics such as the links between energy/protein metabolism and nutrition regarding food quality, nutrigenomics, environmental sustainability and animal welfare in relation to the topic are all explored. This book is a valuable resource to all researchers and industry professionals who concern themselves with animal nutrition.

Book excerpt: Economic analysis of beef cattle production has been limited by the inability to fully describe the underlying production process. Except for confined feeding of cattle, beef cattle production is the process of growing cattle who consume forages. The animal and the forage possess attributes of both factors and products of production. The production of forage constitutes one production process, animal growth is another production process, and reproduction by female animals is a third production process. Cattle production involves all three processes in such a manner that each influences the outcome of the other. Each process is itself complex and analysis is further complicated when all three are considered simultaneously.

Book excerpt: For more than 30 years, modelling has been an important method for integrating, in a flexible, comprehensive and widely applicable way, basic knowledge and biological concepts on digestion and metabolism in farm animals. The purpose of this book is to present the 'state of art' in this area. The chapters are written by leading teams and researchers in this field of study, mainly from Europe, North America and Australasia. Considerable progress has been made in topics dealing with: modelling methods, feeding behaviour, digestion and metabolic processes in ruminants and monogastric animals. This progress is clearly illustrated by the emergence of a new paradigm in animal nutrition, which has moved from the aim to cover the requirements of the animal to explaining and predicting the responses of the animals to diets (e.g., productivity and efficiency, impact on quality of products, environmental aspects, health and well-being). In this book several chapters illustrate that through empirical models, meta-analysis is an efficient tool to synthesize information gathered over recent decades. In addition, compared with other books on modelling farm animal nutrition, two new aspects received particular attention: expanding knowledge of the individual animal to understanding the functioning and management of herds, and the consideration of the environmental impact of animal production. This book is a valuable source of information for researchers, nutritionists, advisors, and graduate students who want to have up-to-date and concise information on mathematical modelling applied to farm animals.

Book excerpt: As members of the public becomes more concious of the food they consume and its content, higher standards are expected in the preparation of such food. The updated seventh edition of Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle explores the impact of cattle's biological, production, and environmental diversities, as well as variations on nutrient utilization and requirements. More enhanced than previous editions, this edition expands on the descriptions of cattle and their nutritional requirements taking management and environmental conditions into consideration. The book clearly communicates the current state of beef cattle nutrient requirements and animal variation by visually presenting related data via computer-generated models. Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle expounds on the effects of beef cattle body condition on the state of compensatory growth, takes an in-depth look at the variations in cattle type, and documents the important effects of the environment and stress on food intake. This volume also uses new data on the development of a fetus during pregnancy to prescribe nutrient requirements of gestating cattle more precisely. By focusing on factors such as product quality and environmental awareness, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle presents standards and advisements for acceptable nutrients in a complete and conventional manner that promotes a more practical understanding and application.
