The following questions guided the study: how do political actors manipulate elections, and what are the salient features of electoral politics in Sri Lanka? Primary and secondary data formed the basis of the analysis, examining eight presidential elections. The research findings indicated that Sri Lankan governments, political parties and political leaders have taken advantage of six types of electoral manipulation, including constitutional tinkering, field fixing, time fixing, vote suppression, process manipulation and resource manipulation. Through a close examination of eight presidential elections, research carried out for the volume found that elections are often associated with violence; presidential elections are mainly a majoritarian affair in which minority communities play only a marginal role; there is a significant gender imbalance, as women’s participation in the electoral process is very limited; despite the presence of a large number of candidates contesting the election, it always remains a two-way race; and amid extensive manipulation and other problems, voter participation tends to be high. This volume will be a valuable resource for students, academics and researchers who focus on democracy, good governance, electoral studies and South Asian politics and history, and will enhance the conceptual foundation of democracy advocates and activists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is bestowed with the unique feature of being the first comprehensive study ever made on India-Israel relations by an Indian Scholar. Indian had maintained a track record of marginalising the Jewish State ever since its inception. Apart from the political, diplomatic and strategic view points, India s diplomatic behaviour with respect to Israel was always a focus of controversy and criticism. Despite keeping friendly relation and even defence deals at times of crisis, the book argues, India resisted the request of Israel for diplomatic ties. The book, while examining this dynamism in India s foreign policy, takes deviation from the conventional research methods from the conventional research methods and trends and examines empirically the factors and forces that have guided India s relation towards Israel. The book objectively brings home the alchemy of policy shift and the potential possibilities and contradictions involved in the bilateral deal between the two States.

Book excerpt: National Security at its simplest means the nation’s control of its borders and the preservation of its territorial integrity including its airspace and territorial waters. Above all, it means the protection of national institutions of governance and the freedom of the people without subversion, infiltration and disruption. On the other hand, there can be no real national security without international security. Diplomacy is an instrument of establishing and maintaining the equilibrium of national and international security. Both diplomacy and national security have their roots in the conceptual scheme and operational aspects of sovereignty, which is the hallmark of States. National security and diplomacy are inextricably interwoven. Indeed defence and diplomacy, the diplomat and the soldier have much in common except that their battle-lines and locations, their target areas, their weapons and equipment and their strategies and tactics are distinct and are tackled differently. Diplomacy is the defence of one’s country and its interests beyond its frontiers, but in a sense, diplomacy only an extension of national security. The intelligence network of the country both within the country and overseas plays a vital role in both in diplomacy and for national security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most fundamental and far-reaching decision of India’s Constitution-makers was to establish the Indian democracy on the foundations of universal adult suffrage and on the principle of ‘one man; on vote’. The decision was an act of faith; homage to the people of India; implicit in the liberal outlook of India’s freedom struggle. The decision to adopt universal adult suffrage was simple and without controversy; but it was by all accounts momentous and revolutionary; making every adult Indian citizen irrespective of caste; sex and economic or educational qualification; a shareholder in India’s democratic enterprise. Consequent of that decision; India became the largest democracy in the world. The Indian Parliament exercises influence rather than power. Its functions lie primarily in processes of consultation and articulation and in the audit and scrutiny of the operations of the government. The substance of the power resides in the cabinet; and more particularly; in the office of the prime minister; but the sanction for that political power is provided by the representative principle embodied in the Parliament.

This book was released on 2014-02-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its creation in 1963, United States Southern Command has been led by 30 senior officers representing all four of the armed forces. None has undertaken his leadership responsibilities with the cultural sensitivity and creativity demonstrated by Admiral Jim Stavridis during his tenure in command. Breaking with tradition, Admiral Stavridis discarded the customary military model as he organized the Southern Command Headquarters. In its place he created an organization designed not to subdue adversaries, but instead to build durable and enduring partnerships with friends. His observation that it is the business of Southern Command to launch "ideas not missiles" into the command's area of responsibility gained strategic resonance throughout the Caribbean and Central and South America, and at the highest levels in Washington, DC.
