Book Synopsis Dynamic Impact Factors for Bridges by : David I. McLean
Download or read book Dynamic Impact Factors for Bridges written by David I. McLean and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation and consulting bridge, structural, and research engineers. The synthesis describes the current state of the practice for determining dynamic impact factors for bridges. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and foreign sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board documents relevant background and recent information with regard to vehicular dynamic load effects on bridges. It provides details on the basic concepts of bridge dynamics, including identification of the main variables affecting bridge dynamic response. In addition, current code provisions for accounting for vehicular dynamic load effects for new bridge design and load evaluation of existing bridges are reported, including a discussion on the background of the provisions. Finally, a discussion of observed field problems associated with vehicular dynamic load effects, as obtained from the survey, are included.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Studies of Bridges on the AASHO Road Test by : University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign campus)
Download or read book Dynamic Studies of Bridges on the AASHO Road Test written by University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign campus) and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program of dynamic tests conducted on the bridges of the AASHO road test at Ottawa, Illinois studied the dynamic effects produced in test bridges under moving vehicles and related the observed behavior to the results predicted by theory. The experimental setup consisted of actual heavy vehicles and full-scale bridges, although the bridges were to an extent simplified models. Loading tests were made on bridges both with stationary and slowly moving vehicles, to determine the stiffness of the bridges at various stages, and study the lateral distribution of effects in order to determine to what extent the test bridges behaved as a beam, which was an assumption involved in the theoretical solutions used to predict the dynamic behavior. Results are presented of approximately 1900 dynamic tests.

Book Synopsis Fourth International Conference on Current and Future Trends in Bridge Design, Construction and Maintenance by : B. Barr
Download or read book Fourth International Conference on Current and Future Trends in Bridge Design, Construction and Maintenance written by B. Barr and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2006 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a state-of-the-art reference, an exchange of innovative experience, creative thinking and industry forecasts. This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth international conference in this series based in the Asia Pacific region, in Kuala Lumpur in October 2005 and is applicable to all sectors of the bridge engineering community. BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE AND FUTURE PERFORMANCE The Institution of Civil Engineers has collaborated with internationally renowned bridge engineers to organise three successful conferences to celebrate the enormous achievements made in the field of bridge engineering in recent years. As a discipline, bridge engineering not only requires knowledge and experience of bridge design and construction techniques but must also deal with increasing challenges posed by the need to maintain the long-term performance of structures throughout an extended service life. In many parts of the world natural phenomena such as seismic events can cause significant damage to force major repairs or reconstruction. Therefore, it is appropriate that the first plenary session of this conference is entitled Engineering for Seismic Performance. READERSHIP This compilation of papers will benefit practising civil and structural engineers in consulting firms and government agencies, bridge contractors, research institutes, universities and colleges. In short, it is of importance to all engineers involved in any aspect of the design, construction and repair, maintenance and refurbishment of bridges.

Book Synopsis Design of Modern Steel Railway Bridges by : John F. Unsworth
Download or read book Design of Modern Steel Railway Bridges written by John F. Unsworth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the first book on this topic in more than 50 years, Design of Modern Steel Railway Bridges focuses not only on new steel superstructures but also outlines principles and methods that are useful for the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing steel railway bridges. It complements the recommended practices of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association (AREMA), in particular Chapter 15-Steel Structures in AREMA’s Manual for Railway Engineering (MRE). The book has been carefully designed to remain valid through many editions of the MRE. After covering the basics, the author examines the methods for analysis and design of modern steel railway bridges. He details the history of steel railway bridges in the development of transportation systems, discusses modern materials, and presents an extensive treatment of railway bridge loads and moving load analysis. He then outlines the design of steel structural members and connections in accordance with AREMA recommended practice, demonstrating the concepts with worked examples. Topics include: A history of iron and steel railway bridges Engineering properties of structural steel typically used in modern steel railway bridge design and fabrication Planning and preliminary design Loads and forces on railway superstructures Criteria for the maximum effects from moving loads and their use in developing design live loads Design of axial and flexural members Combinations of forces on steel railway superstructures Copiously illustrated with more than 300 figures and charts, the book presents a clear picture of the importance of railway bridges in the national transportation system. A practical reference and learning tool, it provides a fundamental understanding of AREMA recommended practice that enables more effective design.

Download or read book Highway Bridge Superstructure Engineering written by Narendra Taly and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A How-To Guide for Bridge Engineers and Designers Highway Bridge Superstructure Engineering: LRFD Approaches to Design and Analysis provides a detailed discussion of traditional structural design perspectives, and serves as a state-of-the-art resource on the latest design and analysis of highway bridge superstructures. This book is applicable to highway bridges of all construction and material types, and is based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) philosophy. It discusses the theory of probability (with an explanation leading to the calibration process and reliability), and includes fully solved design examples of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge superstructures. It also contains step-by-step calculations for determining the distribution factors for several different types of bridge superstructures (which form the basis of load and resistance design specifications) and can be found in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Fully Realize the Basis and Significance of LRFD Specifications Divided into six chapters, this instructive text: Introduces bridge engineering as a discipline of structural design Describes numerous types of highway bridge superstructures systems Presents a detailed discussion of various types of loads that act on bridge superstructures and substructures Discusses the methods of analyses of highway bridge superstructures Includes a detailed discussion of reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges, and slab-steel girder bridges Highway Bridge Superstructure Engineering: LRFD Approaches to Design and Analysis can be used for teaching highway bridge design courses to undergraduate- and graduate-level classes, and as an excellent resource for practicing engineers.
