Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that a volume concerned with dye chemistry should be included in the series Topics in Applied Chemistry. The development of the dye industry has been inexorably linked not only with the development of the chemical industry but also with organic chemistry itself since the middle of the last century. The position of dye chemistry at the forefront of chemical 1945 and more markedly so during the last advance has declined somewhat since 15 years, with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry assuming an increasingly prominent position. Nevertheless, dye production still accounts for a significant portion of the business of most major chemical companies. The field of dye chemistry has stimulated the publication of many books over the years but surprisingly few have concentrated on or even included the practical aspects of dye synthesis and application. Thus, the present volume is designed to fulfill that need and provide the reader with an account of advances in dye chemistry, concentrating on more recent work and giving, in a single volume, synthetic detail and methods of application of the most important classes, information which will be invaluable to both student and research chemist alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy metals always pose serious ecological risks when released into the environment due to their elemental non-degradable nature, regardless of their chemical form. This calls for the development of efficient and low-cost effluent treatment and metal recuperation technologies for contaminated waste water, not only because regulatory limits need to be met but also because the waste itself can be a resource for certain precious metals. Biosorption is a general property of living and dead biomass to rapidly bind and abiotically concentrate inorganic or organic compounds from even very diluted aqueous solutions. As a specific term, biosorption is a method that utilizes materials of biological origin – biosorbents formulated from non-living biomass - for the removal of target substances from aqueous solutions. Recent research on biosorption provides a solid understanding of the mechanism underlying microbial biosorption of heavy metals and related elements. This book gathers review articles analyzing current views on the mechanism and (bio)chemistry of biosorption, the performance of bacterial, fungal and algal biomass, and the practical aspects of biosorbent preparation and engineering. It also reviews the physico-chemical evaluations of biosorbents and modelling of the process as well as the importance of biosorption during heavy metal removal using living cells. It is a reference work for scientists, environmental safety engineers and R&D specialists who wish to further promote biosorption research and use the accumulated knowledge to develop and build industrial applications of biosorption in heavy metal separation technologies.

Book excerpt: An enormous amount of synthetic dyes is used annually in the textile, leather, plastics, paper, and dye industries due to their coloring properties. Although dyes give color to materials, they are prone to increase the level of pollution in the environment. The colored wastewater produced in industrial sectors is released into water bodies, posing threats to the ecosystem. To reduce the adverse effects of dyes in the environment, it is necessary to implement feasible and cost-effective strategies. '"Dye Biodegradation Mechanisms and Techniques - Recent Advances'' provides fundamental principles and pathways of bio-based mechanisms in dye removal. This edition firstly discusses dye classification and pollution, then concentrates on the application of fungi, mesophilic bacteria, microflora, and enzymes in dye degradation. This book also highlights the performance of sequential batch reactor systems, moving bed biofilm reactors, and hybrid bioreactors for dye biodegradation

This book was released on 2018 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution of the waterways is a great challenge of the 21st century. Textile effluents contain compounds which have the capacity to cause more harm when ingested. There are many dye removal technologies like coagulation, photo oxidation which help to remove color from dye wastewater. The use of adsorption to remove color from dye wastewater has been used for many centuries. Activated carbon can efficiently remove color from dye wastewater but it is very expensive and so different researches have been conducted to get the adsorption capacity of different forms of adsorbents. These adsorbents can be gotten from agricultural waste, biomass, and industrial waste and even household materials like paper. In this research, agricultural adsorbents like orange peel, banana peel and onion peel are being used as adsorbents to treat dyes like Acid red 88, Direct blue 15 and Rhodamine 6G. The amount of adsorbent dose and dye concentration is being varied to know at what dye concentration or adsorbent dose effectively removes color from dye wastewater. In this study, the treatment of a binary mixture of dye wastewater with fruit drink of different concentrations, low (10ppm), medium (50ppm) and high (100ppm). The dye waste water was prepared in the laboratory while the fruit drink was bought from a local grocery store. Color removal efficiency was investigated for the three adsorbents; orange peel, banana peel, onion peel. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used to determine the removal efficiency of the adsorption process

Book excerpt: The use of cheap and ecofriendly adsorbents have been studied to find an alternative substitution of activated carbon for the removal dyes from wastewater. Adsorbence from empty fruit bunches (EFB) were taken from palm oil industries were successfully remove dye from simulated wastewater. In this study, dye solution (methyl violet) were added into empty fruit bunches (EFB) which been treated with formaldehyde and sulphuric acid. This experiment's results were compared with result from similar experiment with powder activated carbon (PAC) which commonly use in industries to varying dye concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The result showed that the amount of the adsorbent was increased, the percentage of dye removal increased accordingly. An initial pH of the solution in the range 2-10 was favorable for the methyl violet removal for the adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency of different adsorbents was in order PAC>EFB Ttreated with sulphuric acid>EFB treated with formaldehyde. Adsorbents are very efficient in decolorized dilute solution. The empty fruit bunches (EFB) is a resource which has huge potential to be used for power generator. Today, it have been tried to use wastewater treatment as adsorption agent.
