Book excerpt: The use of cheap and ecofriendly adsorbents have been studied to find an alternative substitution of activated carbon for the removal dyes from wastewater. Adsorbence from empty fruit bunches (EFB) were taken from palm oil industries were successfully remove dye from simulated wastewater. In this study, dye solution (methyl violet) were added into empty fruit bunches (EFB) which been treated with formaldehyde and sulphuric acid. This experiment's results were compared with result from similar experiment with powder activated carbon (PAC) which commonly use in industries to varying dye concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The result showed that the amount of the adsorbent was increased, the percentage of dye removal increased accordingly. An initial pH of the solution in the range 2-10 was favorable for the methyl violet removal for the adsorbent. The adsorption efficiency of different adsorbents was in order PAC>EFB Ttreated with sulphuric acid>EFB treated with formaldehyde. Adsorbents are very efficient in decolorized dilute solution. The empty fruit bunches (EFB) is a resource which has huge potential to be used for power generator. Today, it have been tried to use wastewater treatment as adsorption agent.

Textile effluents contain compounds which have the capacity to cause more harm when ingested. There are many dye removal technologies like coagulation, photo oxidation which help to remove color from dye wastewater. The use of adsorption to remove color from dye wastewater has been used for many centuries. Activated carbon can efficiently remove color from dye wastewater but it is very expensive and so different researches have been conducted to get the adsorption capacity of different forms of adsorbents. These adsorbents can be gotten from agricultural waste, biomass, and industrial waste and even household materials like paper. In this research, agricultural adsorbents like orange peel, banana peel and onion peel are being used as adsorbents to treat dyes like Acid red 88, Direct blue 15 and Rhodamine 6G. The amount of adsorbent dose and dye concentration is being varied to know at what dye concentration or adsorbent dose effectively removes color from dye wastewater. In this study, the treatment of a binary mixture of dye wastewater with fruit drink of different concentrations, low (10ppm), medium (50ppm) and high (100ppm). The dye waste water was prepared in the laboratory while the fruit drink was bought from a local grocery store. Color removal efficiency was investigated for the three adsorbents; orange peel, banana peel, onion peel. Transmittance and Absorbance values were used to determine the removal efficiency of the adsorption process

Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that a volume concerned with dye chemistry should be included in the series Topics in Applied Chemistry. The development of the dye industry has been inexorably linked not only with the development of the chemical industry but also with organic chemistry itself since the middle of the last century. The position of dye chemistry at the forefront of chemical 1945 and more markedly so during the last advance has declined somewhat since 15 years, with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry assuming an increasingly prominent position. Nevertheless, dye production still accounts for a significant portion of the business of most major chemical companies. The field of dye chemistry has stimulated the publication of many books over the years but surprisingly few have concentrated on or even included the practical aspects of dye synthesis and application. Thus, the present volume is designed to fulfill that need and provide the reader with an account of advances in dye chemistry, concentrating on more recent work and giving, in a single volume, synthetic detail and methods of application of the most important classes, information which will be invaluable to both student and research chemist alike.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Batik industry is a very famous textile industry in Malaysia especially in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Started in small scale, today it has become one of the highest economic growths in Malaysia due to high demands locally and from abroad. However, the wastewater from textile industry contributes to water pollution since it utilizes a lot of chemicals. Preliminary studies show that the wastewater from this homemade textile industry contains grease, wax, heavy metal, surfactant, suspended solid, and dyes (organic and inorganic). This research was done to study the potential of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the adsorption of synthetic batik dye (SBD) from aqueous solution by the variation of solution with different contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration of SBD. Activated carbon (AC) is commonly known as one of the great adsorbents in adsorption process. For this study, granular activated carbon (GAC) has been used since it is preferred for all adsorption of gases and vapors as their rate of diffusion are faster. The synthetic batik dye has been chose because the research about this topic has not been done yet. There are three parameters that will be investigated; effect of adsorbent dosage (w), effect of contact time and effect of initial synthetic batik dye concentration. All results from the experiment were being analyzed using UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (UV-Vis). The results show that the color of the dye changes with different contact time, adsorbent dosage and also different initial concentration of synthetic batik dye. The data collected could be used to improve the effectiveness of dye removal from the batik industry wastewater using granular activated carbon (GAC). The research showed the applicability of GAC to adsorb the color of SBD. For SBD initial concentration shows the highest percentage concentration difference which is 69.75 % occurring at 0.2 g/L. While for adsorbent dosage, the highest dosage which is 60 gram get the highest percentage; 94.77 %. And for contact time, the longest contact time which is 20 minutes gets the highest percentage where the percentage is 95.06 %.

Book Description: Due to a high demand in construction and furniture industries worldwide, natural resources such as stones and wood as non-renewable resources are being depleted. Thus, researchers are focusing on renewable resources as alternative materials. As such, the utilisation of abundant solid wastes and byproducts, which are discharged from agriculture, industry and municipalities present an alternative to the conventional materials for the construction and furniture industries. These solid wastes and byproducts, when properly processed have shown to be effective and can readily meet design specifications. Agricultural solid wastes from oil palm distributors such as Oil Palm Shell (OPS) and Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB), which are abundant in agro-based countries, present an interesting alternative to the conventional aggregate in lightweight concrete and artificial plank production, respectively. At present, palm oil producing countries are Barkina Faso, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Republic of Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Uganda, Venezuela and others. In Malaysia, oil palm plantations cover over 5 million hectares, and annual production of OPS as solid waste from 450 oil palm mills is more than 6 million tons. This large amount of OPS as a renewable green aggregate can contribute to overcoming the over dependence on depletable resources for concrete production. The civil engineering projects are of a larger scale; they need sustainable materials in order to gain a greater momentum of growth. The major technical characteristics of OPS solid waste must be primarily understood before each particular use. Therefore, there is a need to highlight the importance of OPS to be used in the construction industry.
