Book excerpt: The Chlorophylls reviews developments in study of chlorophylls, and at the same time summarizes the state of knowledge in the more established areas of the physics, chemistry, and biology of chlorophylls. The book is organized into four sections. The first section deals with the chlorophylls as chemical entities, and treats their isolation, analysis, chemistry, and synthesis. The second concerns chlorophylls in real and colloidal solution and in the solid state in vitro, and includes the effects of aggregation on visible, infrared, and NMR spectral properties. The third section treats the biosynthesis, organization, and properties of chlorophylls in the plant and bacterial cell, and the fourth is concerned with the photochemical and photophysical behavior of chlorophylls in vitro and in vivo. It is hoped that this work will help those investigating selected aspects of chlorophyll to keep abreast of other methods and approaches, and will provide the interested scientist with a modern, conceptually organized treatment of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As editor of the two-part Volume V on photosynthesis in RUHLAND'S Encyclopedia, the forerunner of this series published in 1960, I have been approached by the editors of the present volume to provide a short preface. The justification for following this suggestion lies in the great changes which have been taking place in biology in the two decades between these publications, changes which are reflected in the new editorial plan. Twenty years ago it appeared convenient and formally easy to consider photo synthesis as a clearly separated field of research, which could be dealt with under two major headings: one presenting primarily photochemical and biochemical prin ciples, the other physiological and environmental studies. Such a partition, however, as far as aims and opinions of the authors were concerned, resulted in a rather heterogeneous volume. Today, the tendency in experimental biology is towards a merger of previously distinct disciplines. Biochemists and biophysicists have developed their methods to such an extent that, over and above the analysis of individual reaction sequences, work on the manifold interrelationships among cellular activities has become in creasingly possible. Joining them in growing numbers are the physiologists and ecologists with their wealth of information on activity changes in vivo and on the variability and efficiency of the organisms concerned. Furthermore, biochemists, biophysicists and physiologists also now share a lively interest in ultrastructure research, the results and implications of which, through continually improving methodology, have generated important stimuli for the work in the field of cell function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Bioenergetics, Volume I presents the molecular basis of biological energy transduction. This book focuses on photosynthetic reactions. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the second photosystem that evolves oxygen from water. This text then presents a brief historical background of fluorescence in relation to the development of the two-pigment-system concept of photosynthesis and indicates the significance of fluorescence measurements in the study of photosynthesis. Other chapters consider mitochondrial ion transport, its relation to active transport in cells, and its possible effects on muscle contraction. This book discusses as well the concept of uncoupling in oxidative phosphorylation. The reader is also introduced to the biochemical basis of luminescence, which has been investigated in several organisms. The final chapter deals with the study of mitochondrial cations and of the cation transport. This book is a valuable resource for biochemists, molecular biologists, scientists, and research workers.

Book excerpt: Structure and Function of Oxidation–Reduction Enzymes is a collection of papers presented at the Wenner-Gren Symposium held at the Wenner-Gren Center, Stockholm on August 23-27, 1970. It provides important understanding of the structure and function of oxidation-reduction enzymes: iron, flavin, and nicotinamide enzymes. This book discusses the functional differences among varying structures such cytochrome c, haemoglobins, dehydrogenases, flavins, oestrogens, and peroxidases. It concludes by presenting future expectations, including some questions that need to be addressed. This volume will be of great value to those interested in the present-day research on oxidation-reduction enzymes.

Book excerpt: Physical Processes in Radiation Biology covers the proceedings of an International Symposium on Physical Processes in Radiation Biology, held at the Kellogg Center for Continuing Education, Michigan State University on May 6-8, 1963, sponsored by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. The symposium aims to address the core problems of radiation biology concerning the absorption, distribution, and utilization of high energy packets in biological systems. This book is composed of 21 chapters, and begins with an introduction to the absorption, excitation, and transfer processes in molecular solids. The subsequent chapters discuss the nature of exciton processes; the mechanisms of charge transport in biological materials; the interactions of fast and slow electrons with model systems; the importance of liquid structures in determining the development of radiation damage; and the nature of the metastable species formed. The concluding chapters explore the importance of charge migration in energy transfer processes in different biological systems and the significance of higher excited levels in charge migration and energy transfer. These chapters also describe the nature of the hydration of electrons and protons in aqueous systems. This book will be of great value to radiation biologists, biophysicists, physical chemists, and physicists.
