Book excerpt: As competition over donations for humanitarian aid projects intensifies, traditional German NGOs come under additional pressure from an unlikely side: A new breed of aggressively expanding market entrants monopolizes distribution channels, thus obtaining a significant market share. Lacking any own aid projects, however, these organizations distribute the raised donations to traditional NGOs. This unusual set-up leaves NGO executives searching for a strategic response: While the new competitor’s funding is clearly a welcome treat, the competitive aspect is much less pleasing. This study revisits contemporary approaches to positioning strategy formulation, deducing a systematization of fundraising campaign organizations (FCOs) and offering helpful recommendations for NGO executives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new paradigm for balancing flexibility and commitment in management strategy through the amalgamation of real options and game theory. Corporate managers who face both strategic uncertainty and market uncertainty confront a classic trade-off between commitment and flexibility. They can stake a claim by making a large capital investment today, influencing their rivals' behavior, or they can take a “wait and see” approach to avoid adverse market consequences tomorrow. In Competitive Strategy, Benoît Chevalier-Roignant and Lenos Trigeorgis describe an emerging paradigm that can quantify and balance commitment and flexibility, “option games,” by which the decision-making approaches of real options and game theory can be combined. The authors first discuss prerequisite concepts and tools from basic game theory, industrial organization, and real options analysis, and then present the new approach in discrete time and later in continuous time. Their presentation of continuous-time option games is the first systematic coverage of the topic and fills a significant gap in the existing literature. Competitive Strategy provides a rigorous yet pragmatic and intuitive approach to strategy formulation. It synthesizes research in the areas of strategy, economics, and finance in a way that is accessible to readers not necessarily expert in the various fields involved.

Each new service requires a number of management and marketing decisions to be made well in advance of its launch and throughout its entire life cycle. This book develops mathematical models to facilitate decision-making dealing with technologically innovative services. Specifically, it develops (i) models for optimal pricing strategies of subscription services on monopolistic and duopolistic markets; (ii) an analytical model for optimal investment and optimal pricing strategies for innovative maintenance service contracts; and (iii) a model for targeting customers in marketing campaigns. In addition, the models (i) (iii) can also be used to forecast an aggregate demand for a new service as well as the service demand for each individual customer.

Book excerpt: A key challenge in science and engineering is to provide a quantitative description of the systems under investigation, leveraging the noisy data collected. Such a description may be a complete mathematical model or a mechanism to return controllers corresponding to new, unseen inputs. Recent advances in the theories are described in detail, along with their applications in engineering. The book aims to develop model-free system analysis and control strategies, i.e., data-driven control from theoretical analysis and engineering applications based only on measured data. The study aims to develop system identification, and combination in advanced control theory, i.e., data-driven control strategy as system and controller are generated from measured data directly. The book reviews the development of system identification and its combination in advanced control theory, i.e., data-driven control strategy, as they all depend on measured data. Firstly, data-driven identification is developed for the closed-loop, nonlinear system and model validation, i.e., obtaining model descriptions from measured data. Secondly, the data-driven idea is combined with some control strategies to be considered data-driven control strategies, such as data-driven model predictive control, data-driven iterative tuning control, and data-driven subspace predictive control. Thirdly data-driven identification and data-driven control strategies are applied to interested engineering. In this context, the book provides algorithms to perform state estimation of dynamical systems from noisy data and some convex optimization algorithms through identification and control problems.

Book excerpt: `Readers interest in an overview of important aspects of the strategy field will find this book a helpful volume to add to their shelves′ - Administrative Sciences Quarterly This is a new overview of the strategy field, with internationally renowned contributors summarizing the latest directions and developments in strategic management theory in the context of their theoretical roots in economics, organization theory, and systems theory. The contributors outline the most promising new directions on the basis of a systemic treatment of paradigms or schools of thought in strategy: redrawing firm boundaries, developing dynamic capabilities and discovering viable strategy configurations. The volume will be an invaluable companion to advanced courses in strategy and management, used as a reader alongside case material and field studies. As well as providing a summary and evaluation of the different schools of thought in strategy, the volume offers a synthesis of the American and European approaches.

For those universities who embraced digital transformation, they were able to adapt quickly to this new learning environment. Many others were not as successful. Part of the formula for success is for universities and other higher education institutions apply digital transformation technologies, processes, and leadership in this 'new normal'. This book will highlight what is needed in terms of digital transformation for the universities of the future in terms of technologies, processes, culture, and leadership considerations. The book will be part of the new World Scientific book series, Digital Transformation: Accelerating Organizational Intelligence.Related Link(s)
