Book excerpt: In 1942, as American blood is about to be spilled in far-off Guadalcanal, a young man boards a train and blindly heads towards his destiny: boot camp with the United States Marine Corps. These tragic times of World War II were the defining years for millions of cowboys and plowboys. This book is a compelling chronicle about these years and one not-so-ordinary young man. aThe War Years' is a heartwarming saga about Dutch Clarke who, over the objections of his prominent family, answers his country's call. Just as Dutch is about to complete boot camp, family influence steps in and propels him through the ranks and into the Office of War Information. Here he puts down his rifle and takes up photography. Soon Dutch learns the power of the lens and the courage to use it. This is a uniquely different war story about men who fought their way across the Pacific, not with guns but with cameras. This tapestry covers more than just guns and bullets; it is also about the human threads of prejudice, friendship and the ultimate sacrifice. After surviving a Japanese POW camp and a daring escape, Dutch is given the opportunity to be one of the first American photographers to set foot on homeland Japan...here he turns his assignment from reconnaissance to revenge. This story is as fresh as today's headlines and as true as yesterday's sins. Winner: Eric Hoffer Literary Award Book of the Year Finalist - ForeWord Magazine The War Years is an engaging and insightful look into Dutch Clarke's military service among tinsel town's celebrities, his front line action as a combat photographer, and his subsequent refusal to be cowed as a Japanese prisoner. It's an action filled, satisfying read for any reader, especially if you like a good military novel. Gary Adams, author of Felicity - Hard Times - Happy Days. The novelist misses nothing as his narrative snaps pictures of racism, injury, death, heroism, revenge, and redemption in nonstop action. Ratty effectively weaves a combination of current drama and flashbacks as Dutch narrates his saga. A skilled storyteller, Ratty has moments of elegant prose. ForeWord Clarion Review

Book excerpt: We all come into this world alone, and go out the same. Between coming and going, is life. This is a story about life and how a year long adventure defines the future for a young man named Dutch Clarke. Manipulated by his Grandfather, he undertakes a one-year ordeal in the wilderness of British Columbia in 1941. Set against the backdrop of the opening days of World War II, this is a classic story of a personal struggle and coming of age against all odds. Dutch begins his trek with only his horse Blaze, two mules and a half wild dog, Gus. As they hike to the remote Nascall Valley, he digs deep to learn courage, self-reliance and self-esteem. Along the way, Dutch faces many obstacles, some life threatening, some inspiring and all a challenge to his character and spirit. Taken from his journals and illustrated with drawings made along the trail, the narrative style of the story strongly pulls the reader along from one adventure to the next. It's a story of redemption. It's a story that shaped a life. It's an "edge of your seat" survival saga at its best!

Book excerpt: Since their publication in the Camden Series over 100 years ago, Sir Charles Firth's editions of the papers and New Model Army secretary William Clarke, Clarke Papers I-IV (1891-1901), have formed a fundamental source for students of the English Civil War and Interregnum, 1642-1660. This volume offers a further selection, deciphered for the first time since they were written by Frances Henderson, from the many documents which Clarke disguised in one of the rudimentary shorthand systems of his day. The new material consists mainly of the political intelligence which was being passed at every level from informed sources in London and elsewhere to English army headquarters in Scotland, where Clarke was based during the 1650s. The text is fully annotated. Appendices include a list of correspondents identified by Clarke in shorthand letters otherwise written en clair, and a survey of the use of shorthand in early seventeenth-century England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author draws on a dazzling variety of archival and printed sources.... The Dutch Moment is a signal contribution to the field.―Renaissance Quarterly In The Dutch Moment, Wim Klooster shows how the Dutch built and eventually lost an Atlantic empire that stretched from the homeland in the United Provinces to the Hudson River and from Brazil and the Caribbean to the African Gold Coast. The fleets and armies that fought for the Dutch in the decades-long war against Spain included numerous foreigners, largely drawn from countries in northwestern Europe. Likewise, many settlers of Dutch colonies were born in other parts of Europe or the New World. The Dutch would not have been able to achieve military victories without the native alliances they carefully cultivated. Indeed, the Dutch Atlantic was quintessentially interimperial, multinational, and multiracial. At the same time, it was an empire entirely designed to benefit the United Provinces. The pivotal colony in the Dutch Atlantic was Brazil, half of which was conquered by the Dutch West India Company. Its brief lifespan notwithstanding, Dutch Brazil (1630–1654) had a lasting impact on the Atlantic world. The scope of Dutch warfare in Brazil is hard to overestimate—this was the largest interimperial conflict of the seventeenth-century Atlantic. Brazil launched the Dutch into the transatlantic slave trade, a business they soon dominated. At the same time, Dutch Brazil paved the way for a Jewish life in freedom in the Americas after the first American synagogues opened their doors in Recife. In the end, the entire colony eventually reverted to Portuguese rule, in part because Dutch soldiers, plagued by perennial poverty, famine, and misery, refused to take up arms. As they did elsewhere, the Dutch lost a crucial colony because of the empire’s systematic neglect of the very soldiers on whom its defenses rested. After the loss of Brazil and, ten years later, New Netherland, the Dutch scaled back their political ambitions in the Atlantic world. Their American colonies barely survived wars with England and France. As the imperial dimension waned, the interimperial dimension gained strength. Dutch commerce with residents of foreign empires thrived in a process of constant adaptation to foreign settlers’ needs and mercantilist obstacles.

"Sir Ellis Clarke: A Royal Son of the Soil is an eloquent biography that introduces Americans to the life of Sir Ellis Clarke, a modern-day Founding Father of Trinidad and Tobago. Readers in the United States and around the world will be the likely beneficiaries of Dr. Seigler's insight into how Sir Ellis' struggle to devise a workable constitution for his own nation, might illuminate the constitutional jurisprudence of the United States." Book excerpt: This book explores a phase in the history of both Indonesia and Singapore that is little known. It is a narrative analysis of how the dynamics of the Indonesian revolution (1945-1949) overflowed into Singapore. In turn, Singapore was a base for the Indonesian nationalists, the British, the Dutch, and Chinese traders, with each group exploiting prevailing circumstances for their own interests. Indeed, the author argues that the success of Indonesia s struggle against the Dutch was due in no small measure to the opportunities available in Singapore to advance Indonesia s strategic aims. The Singapore connection during these years was a vital link.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Britain the name of William III is synonymous with sectarianism and Orangism. Ever since he burst onto the English political landscape in 1688 to take the throne of his catholic uncle, James II, William has tended to be viewed within a largely domestic sphere. Yet, it has been acknowledged that William's main motivation in accepting the English crown was to aid the ongoing struggles of the United Provinces against the might of Louis XIV's France. Whilst both the British and European aspects of William's activities have been studied before, there has until now been no English language book that draws together both his Dutch and British concerns. In this book, made available in English for the first time, Wout Troost exploits his detailed knowledge of Dutch, English, Scottish and Irish sources to paint a holistic and convincing political analysis of William's reign. Beginning with a brief biography of William, the real strength of this book lies in its analysis of the first part of William's reign before the events of 1688. It is this crucial period that has been most neglected by English-speaking historians, despite the fact that it is crucial to understanding the events that follow. For without an appreciation of William's formative years as Stadholder and soldier, his actions and decisions relating to the English crown cannot be properly construed. Providing a truly balanced insight into the political career of William, this book will be welcomed by all those with in interest in European history, or who wish to better understand the political and religious geography of modern Britain. The translation of this book was made possible by a generous subsidy from NWO, the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek.
