M., The Early Years tells the story of the once boom town of Duran located in Torrance county. The community owes its existence to the coming of the railroad in 1901. The El Paso & Southwestern railroad was building its railroad north towards Santa Rosa where it would connect with the Rock Island & Chicago railroad. The last spike combining the two railroad companies was driven in February 1902, just east of a large railroad bridge spanning the Pecos river. The two railroads then provided a new railway connecting the eastern and western parts of the United States. The new rail line transportation by rail for freight and passengers and was an alternative for the Santa Fe railroad which entered New Mexico near Raton. The new railroad would enter the Territory of New Mexico east of Tucumcari and travel southwesterly towards El Paso, Texas. Duran, N. M., helps develop an understanding of Duran and its surrounding area through a series of newspaper articles. The articles, which are in chronological order and include the name of the newspaper, are often quite colorful because of the language, of a unique local color, that was used early in the twentieth century, help relate the events of the time in territorial New Mexico, and after statehood was achieved in 1912, the events that happened in Duran in the new state. The articles provide an accurate description of the everyday life of the Duran citizens during that period of time. The articles have not been edited to correct any grammar or spelling mistakes. Pictures collected from different sources help to illustrate many of the articles. Besides the railroad, Duran once had high expectations of becoming an oil center when an oil well was drilled. Though oil was eventually found, it was not in sufficient amounts to warrant it becoming an oil producing center.

They slowly pushed their borders to the north, establishing little villages along the Rio Grande and dozens of its tributaries. Their progress was often interrupted, first by the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and later by fierce resistance from the native people whose territory they were invading. Nonetheless, over the centuries of Spanish and Mexican rule, their frontier plaza villages survived. During their long journey, these unique people retained a strong sense of their Spanish identity and tradition. Most remarkably, they also continued to speak a version of castellano, the sixteenth century language of Cervantes. Historians usually say that the outer boundary of the Hispano homeland was defined by the 1860s or 1870s. But the last of the Hispano homesteaders were not finished and continued to create new settlements in the final decades of the nineteenth century and even the early years of twentieth century. This is the never before told story of a few of these New Mexico Hispanos, among the last pioneers, who made their home along a little known river in the high mountain wilderness at the northern edge of New Mexico. And it was happening at just about the time that New Mexico became a state.

By 1920 such health seekers represented an estimated 10 percent of New Mexico’s population. The influx of “lungers” as they were called—many of whom remained in New Mexico—would play a critical role in New Mexico’s struggle for statehood and in its growth. Book excerpt: How an Hispano community maintained its identity over four centuries Located in Albuquerque’s south valley, Atrisco is a vibrant community that predates the city, harking back to a land grant awarded in 1692. Joseph P. Sánchez explores the evolution of this parcel over the four centuries since the first Spanish settlers arrived. He tracks its transformation from an individual to a community grant, peeling away the layers of historical events that have made Atrisco the last piece of undeveloped real estate in a growing metropolitan area. Sánchez examines the creation of Atrisco as a frontier community during the Spanish and Mexican periods and shows how it maintained its identity and land ownership into the American era. He describes the historical processes of colonization, land tenures and transfers, and social and economic activity. He also assesses the transfer of the land grant to a private corporation and its subsequent fate, and considers Atrisco’s role in the future of Albuquerque.
