Book excerpt: Dung beetles in families Scarabaeidae (subfamilies Aphodiinae, Scarabaeinae and Coprinae) and Geotrupidae (Geotrupinae) aid in the decomposition of dung providing many benefits to pasture and animal health. They improve the soil by burying nutrient-rich dung, and aerating and mixing the soil through tunneling activity. Dung beetles also compete with pestiferous flies and parasitic nematodes for dung resources. Recent trappings at two sites in North Carolina Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions revealed presence of 30 dung beetle species in cattle pastures. A survey of dung beetles was conducted from May to October 2005 in 10 counties representing the three geographic regions of North Carolina, the Mountains, Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. Total of 1,863 specimens representing 15 species were collected from dung baited pitfall traps or directly from cattle dung. Most commonly collected species were Aphodius pseudolividus Olivier and Onthophagus taurus Schreber. Elevation, temperature and soil type were taken into consideration when rationalizing the presence of certain species in the different regions of North Carolina. A study was conducted to evaluate benefits of O. taurus activity on soil nutrition and yield of two common North Carolina pasture grasses. Tunneling activity of O. taurus and dung burial for brood production elevated the levels of major plant nutrients P, K and N in three soil types (Piedmont clay, Coastal Plain sandy-loam and play sand) under laboratory conditions. O. taurus activity increased the yield of Sudangrass Sorghum bicolor (L.) and ryegrass Lolium multiflorum Lam. over the dung only treatment and control. Dung beetle presence improved ryegrass yield over the fertilizer treatment in Cecil red clay and play sand. Methoprene, an insect growth regulator successfully reduced the horn fly [Haematobia irritans (L.)] numbers in an area-wide program in Nash Co., NC. They compete with pestiferous flies and parasitic nematodes for dung resources, enrich the soil by burying large quantities of nutritious dung and effectively mix and aerate soil through tunneling. Very little is known about the composition of dung beetle species existing in North Carolina cattle pastures or their seasonal activity. Dung-baited pitfall trapping was conducted for 18 months in cattle pastures of two distinct regions of NC, the piedmont and the coastal plains. Data from the piedmont and coastal plains revealed a disparity in species richness (14 and 28 species, respectively) and beetle numbers (20 traps yielding 85,882 beetles and 10 traps yielding 4,111 beetles, respectively). However, both sites were dominated by nine exotic dung beetles and had similar species compositions. The seasonal activity of 30 species is reported, including two new state records, Aphodius prodromus Brahm and Onthophagus gazella (Fabricius). These data represent important background information on the relative abundance and richness of dung beetle species in North Carolina. Two additional studies evaluated the benefit of dung beetles on soil nutrition, and the off-target effects of the insect growth regulator methoprene on dung beetle populations. The activity of two species of tunneling dung beetles (Onthophagus gazella and Onthophagus taurus Schreber) was found to contribute to the general nutrition of three soil types (piedmont clay, coastal plains sandy-loam and play sand) under laboratory conditions. To assess the affect of habitat and location on dung beetle diversity, I conducted sampling at Purple Springs Grazing Reserve and Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park (Chapter 3). Each habitat and location was dominated by different species for both sampling years. The affect of bait treatment and age on the attractiveness of the coprophagous insect community was assessed using fresh and frozen dung baits, with frozen baits being more attractive for the first three days (Chapter 4). To expedite sample processing, regression equations were developed for three treatments (wet, air-dried, and oven-dried weight), which allow for counts of individuals to be estimated by their bulk weight (Chapter 5).
