Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An album which distilled a genre from the musical, cultural, and social ether, Portishead's Dummy was such a complete artistic achievement that its ubiquitous successes threatened to exhaust its own potential. RJ Wheaton offers an impressionistic investigation of Dummy that imitates the cumulative structure of the album itself, piecing together interviews, impressions of time and place, cultural criticism, and a thorough exploration of the music itself. The approach focuses as much on the reception and response that Dummy engendered as it does on the original production of the album. How is that so many people have, collectively, made a quintessential headphone album into a nightclub album? How have they made the product of a niche local scene into an international success? This is the story of how an innovative, experimental album became the iconic sound for the better part of a decade; and an aesthetic template for the experience of music in the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the sexcapades of Bill Clinton to the unbelievable story of Hugh Grant and the prostitute; from the 15-year-old who weighs only 82 pounds but believes she's obese, to the professor who screams profanities at other drivers in snarled traffic--we wonder out loud, "What are they thinking?!" What drives so many apparently normal, intelligent people to act irrationally, harming themselves and others? According to Sigmund Freud, such behavior may be caused by the "id," our built-in mental invitation to everything from dangerous fun to horrendous acts of irrationality. For popular psychology writer David Weiner, "id" stands for "Inner Dummy," the part of the brain that we must come to understand if we are ever to know why we do foolish, irrational, and compulsive things. Drawing on the groundbreaking theories of evolutionary psychology, Battling the Inner Dummy localizes the source of our irrationality in the limbic id-the most primitive part of our brain that endlessly thirsts for status, sex, territory, nurturance, and survival. "We become captured by these drives," Weiner says. "By understanding our Inner Dummy, we can avoid disasters in our own lives." Along with sound advice from clinical psychiatrist Dr. Gilbert Hefter on how to handle our own Inner Dummies with built-in rewards and punishments, Weiner brilliantly interweaves delightful, imagined conversations with Freud and staffers at a mythical advertising agency, who have been given the assignment of communicating the nature of the id's irrationalities to the general public (e.g., t-shirts that say, "Would someone please fix my Inner Dummy before I fall in love with another idiot?" and a bathroom scale that allows you to weigh eight pounds less each time you use it). This inviting, humorous romp with Inner Dummies who have made the news illustrates how we can apply "ID prevention" in our daily lives and includes all the major strategies science and medicine have developed over the years to counter Inner Dummies that threaten our well-being. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A grave injustice, a life sentence, is carried out on a boy not yet 2 years old. Greg Runnerstrum is judged to be retarded, he is ridiculed daily. The bullies pound this scarlet letter into him at will with glee. This is a must read for those who abhor socialized injustice and cheer the triumph of the spirit over all obstacles. For Greg Runnerstrum may start out on the bottom but he surely doesn't end up there, quite the contrary. A small assortment of people from different walks of life see beyond the stigmatized Greg. Strangers really, they find a most worthwhile human being who grows thanks to their nurturing. From a dismal beginning, reader's spirits will soar with Greg as he finds his way through life - to the American dream and beyond. This work will appeal to readers on several levels. Psychologically, 'The Dummy' deals with as boy's non-existent self-esteem and how his peers perceive and treat him based on his 'label'. How prejudices die ever so slowly upon the revelation that Greg is really brilliant. Emotionally, it's a roller coaster ride. Depressing at first, as everyday situations trigger past injustices. The beatings and humiliations will bring a sense of rage among readers. Sensual, for who would ever thought that Greg would find true love and deal with it on a mature, emotional level? Philanthropic, as Greg, with nothing to give, is given everything and enjoys returning the favor by helping others, anonymously. Introspective. Are you Greg? Greg's friend? Or one of his tormentors? - Alan S. Ferguson

This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we focus specifically on differences in the welfare impacts of COVID-19 on rural livelihoods between countries using nationally representative data that we disaggregate by food system typology. This typology captures key structural differences in the organization of rural economies and the vulnerabilities to rural livelihoods due to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures. In particular, we draw on household survey data collected from 54 countries through the World Bank’s COVID-19 High Frequency Monitoring Dashboard to generate descriptive data on COVID-19 impacts in rural areas across three dimensions: income, coping strategies and food security. These descriptive data are disaggregated into four food system categories and contextualized and validated through a systematic review of rigorous, survey-based studies of COVID-19 impacts in rural areas. Through this analysis, the report provides insights on how COVID-19 is influencing rural livelihoods, how its impacts vary between countries and food system typologies, and, ultimately, how policymakers and the international community need to respond in order to foster an inclusive and sustainable recovery.
