Elle couvre une longue période qui débute avec la première commande pour un espace public (Faculté de Nanterre en 1965) jusqu’aux projets monumentaux réalisés (La Closerie Falbala) ou ceux restés sans suite (Salon d’été). L’origine de cet aspect de l’oeuvre de Dubuffet, ou le passage de la peinture à l’architecture dans son oeuvre, provient de la commande de deux peintures monumentales pour la Nouvelle Faculté des Lettres de Nanterre, alors en construction, qui amène Dubuffet à s’intéresser à de nouveaux matériaux pour transcrire les figures du cycle de L’Hourloupe dans un support plus résistant que la peinture vinylique qu'il emploie alors. Très vite, des essais en céramique sont réalisés, transformant la surface plane en bas-reliefs, offrant à L'Hourloupe sa première tentative d'investir la troisième dimension. L'abandon du projet de Nanterre entraîne celui du matériau mais non de la recherche. Après avoir étudié les possibilités du béton peint, c’est vers les résines plastiques que se tourne Dubuffet. Le Mur bleu est la première de ces réalisations. Les autres projets monumentaux réalisés pour la France, les Etats-Unis ou la Hollande entre autres, sont étudiés dans cet ouvrage, le premier qui aborde cet aspect de l’œuvre de Dubuffet.

Instead, it recognizes the canon's significance in comprehending architecture, while seeking to uncover its presumed Western-centric integrity through a shift from a monological to a dialogical approach. This approach integrates concepts of identity and Otherness as dialectically articulated and mutually interrelated. In essence, the book's main thesis contends that the canon's historiographic construction overlooked the existence of “Otherness”, specifically neglecting the world beyond the North Atlantic nucleus of the West. By examining a global context to comprehend the canon formation, the book proposes a more accurate understanding of the history of modern architecture. Recognizing that this task cannot emanate from a single hegemonic center, it presents the prospect of a coral-type architectural history. This narrative should and could encompass voices from diverse cultures to explore the particular circumstances of the world intertwined with each piece or figure transiently integrated into that canon. As a result, the ideal readers of this book position themselves within multiple settings, keen on engaging in a critical global conversation about modern architectural discourse. It will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, architectural history, and cultural studies.
