It will be understood that as Dublin was not a place of any importance in Ireland at the earliest times of which we have any record it is not frequently mentioned in our old stories, and I venture to think that allusion has been made to almost all its legendary associations. The knowledge of these legends will, I hope, serve to heighten the love which Dubliners have for the beautiful country around the city, and to give an added interest to scenes which are lovely in themselves, and which are already endeared by many associations and memories. Only such portions of the legends as refer to places in the county have been referred to. To have told the stories in full would require a much larger work than the present essay, and would have been foreign to the purpose which it is intended to serve.
