Book excerpt: Henri Michaux is both a recognised poet and visual artist, arguably one of the greatest ‘double artists’ of the twentieth century. This book presents the first detailed examination of a particular interdisciplinary aspect of his production, namely, the innovative experimentation with signs contained in four works: Mouvements, Par la voie des rythmes, Saisir and Par des traits. Questions arise concerning their literary and visual status as, in their attempt to render interior rhythm and dynamism, they occupy an interstitial space between writing and drawing, between the book and the canvas, between the Western alphabet and Chinese characters. This study addresses these questions by analysing the conception, production and reception of Michaux’s signs and the literary and artistic contexts in which they were produced.

Book excerpt: The Uprisings exhibition at La Maison Rouge presents all facets of the work of Jean-Jacques Lebel the artist but also that of Jean-Jacques Lebel the exhibition curator, writer, performer, festival organizer, discoverer, and active smuggler who has been an agitator within French artist circles over the past forty years. More than an exhibition, what we have here is a montrage (a Show/editing), to employ the term invented by the artist himself. Lebel offers us a whole "arranged in terms of the connections or caroms among the works-among their contents, not among their commercial values-and this is done in such a way as to encourage movements of thought in all senses of the term". In other words, this montrage is a unique way of presenting objects that, a priori, have nothing to do with each other, but which "share some common issues and modes of operation that serve to intensify one another". Entitled Uprisings, the exhibition pertains to "a process that is at once artistic, historical, mental, personal, and social-which implies a long process of maturation and multiple encounters, influences, exchanges, and permutations" (JJL). The exhibition is divided into themes. Each corresponds to Jean-Jacques Lebel's obsession with the enigma which a work and the wider context of its emergence raise. Happenings, Insubordination, Poetry, Hallucination, Eros, Dada, War and Rhizome are some examples. Through these interconnecting ensembles, visitors can engage with some of Jean-Jacques Lebel's major installations, works of primitive art, works by anonymous artists and others by such important allies as Johann Heinrich Füssli, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Louise Michel, Fourier, Ravachol, Guillaume Apollinaire, Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, Otto Dix, George Grosz, André Breton, Francis Picabia, Antonin Artaud, Victor Brauner, Bernard Heidsieck, Erró, Antonio Saura, Peter Saul, Camilla Adami and Orlan: some three hundred works in all which continue to engross the artist in an earnest and endless dialogue. Book excerpt: Richard Greaves left Montreal in 1984, completely turning his back on his former life and work, and moved to the Beauce region of Quebec. There, he took up residence on a piece of land that he and some friends had bought eight years prior, near a small rural community. Only in 1989 did he begin to work on this immense (250 metres x 1.6 kilometres) site, placing on the ground and attaching to trees installations composed of objects made from garbage; computer key-boards and screens, typewriters, clothes, toys, shoes, household appliances, sports equipment, television sets, umbrellas, and more. Between 1990 and 1995, Greaves worked with the artist and poet Berthier Guay, who lived nearby. Guay was often commissioned by clients to dismantle old buidings, piece by piece, and reconstruct them elsewhere. The architectural procedures used by Greaves result in a reversal of the conceptual rules of construction. His work arises from 'counter-architecture', or what Michel Ragon calls 'anarchitecture'. Book excerpt: New York's now-defunct Museum of Primitive Art opened its landmark exhibition Senufo: Sculpture from West Africa in February 1963. Under the directorship of art historian Robert Goldwater, the museum displayed together for the first time a stunning array of arts attributed to Senufo artists: face masks, helmet masks, and figurative sculptures, all from a region spanning the borders of present-day Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Mali. Now, more than 50 years later, this new book draws on archival, museum, and field-based data, including previously unpublished letters, photographs, and objects, to look back at that tour-de-force exhibition, and offers a fresh, expanded view of a dynamic region's arts and identities.
