Book excerpt: Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a process that converts CH4 and CO2 gases into syngas, a gaseous mixture of H2 and CO. Ni based catalysts proved to be suitable for the reaction due to their good activity, wider availability and lower cost than noble-based materials. However, these catalysts are not stable due to Ni sintering and coke deposition. In this thesis we developed two different synthesis routes of mesoporous Ni-Al2O3 based catalysts that can occlude Ni inside the pores achieving high activity and stability in DRM. A set of complimentary physicochemical techniques was systematically applied to thoroughly investigate the materials properties at all steps of preparation and activation. The first approach embraces synthesis of mesoporous Ni-Mg-Al2O3 materials by one-pot EISA strategy. Results demonstrate that 15 wt% Mg (optimum loading) based sample contribute to high and homogenous dispersion of both Ni and Mg, preserving ordered mesoporous Al2O3 walls. The good structural and textural characteristics in addition to the enhanced basicity reinforce activity and stability. The second method involves synthesizing new mesoporous Ni-Al2O3 materials using metal-organic framework as sacrificial template. This procedure results in small Ni nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed and stabilized within the high surface area support resisting sintering and inhibiting carbon nanotubes formation during reforming reaction. Based on catalytic tests completed by thermodynamics calculations, the synthesized materials proved to be eficient not only for dry reforming of methane, but also for CO2 methanation reaction and dry reforming of waste pyrolysis products.

Book excerpt: Researchers have been studying dry reforming of methane (DRM) to produce syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, from methane and carbon dioxide. In this study, catalysts containing 5% wt Ni dispersed on SBA-15 support were prepared by "two solvent impregnation" method. Without prior calcination, three samples were pretreated by reduction under different atmospheres (H2/Ar, N2, Ar) at 450°C with a heating rate of 0.5°C/min. Two other samples were reduced under H2/Ar but at different temperatures and heating rates (650°C with 10°C/min, and 450°C with 0.5°C/min). After the catalysts characterization (N2 sorption, XRD and TPR) and the catalytic tests (activity and stability), Ni5/SBA-15(U-H2) (reduced under H2/Ar at 450°C with a heating rate 0.5°C/min) showed the best catalytic performance among the other catalysts studied. The behavior of Ni5/SBA-15(U-H2) is close to the behavior of Ni5/SBA-15 calcined at 450°C with a heating rate 0.5°C/min.

Book excerpt: Dry reforming of methane represents an attractive way to the conversion of two greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) into valuable products. Transition metal Ni is universally considered as an alternative to noble metal for DRM, due to its high activity and low cost. However, Ni-based catalysts suffered deactivation resulted from sintering of the active phase and carbon deposition, thus its practical application is not actually possible. So, there is a need to develop a cost-effective catalyst, able to withstand high temperatures and able to resist deactivation.First, the Ni-Zr catalysts were prepared by the one step urea hydrolysis method and were evaluated on the dry reforming of methane. Secondly, different promoters (such as Y, Al, Mn, and Mg) with Ni-Zr were co-synthesized by the same method (urea hydrolysis). The relationship between performance and structure is analyzed by activity test and multiple characterizations, such as BET, XRD, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, TEM, XPS and Raman. Among them, the Y-modified catalysts improved the resistance to carbon deposition by increasing the weak and medium-strength basic sites. Also, the presence of Al could enhance the catalytic performance due to larger pore volume and diameter after aluminum introduction. The addition of Mn led to the increase of the catalytic activity with time on stream because of a more stable structure of ZrO2 species and a redistribution of nickel species. Thus, the choices of different promoters result in diversification in the specific surface area, Ni0 crystallite size, and basicity, which may further affect the catalytic performance of prepared catalysts.

Book excerpt: This work takes a closer look at ceria catalyst synthesis through micelle self-assembly. We compare surfactants, precursors, solvent systems, and doping. The surfactants are the building blocks upon which the ceria can crystallize. The samples are calcinated to test their thermal stability. Characterization is performed using pXRD as well as physisorption. The samples that exhibited a higher thermal stability were characterized to have a high surface area as well as low fluctuations in crystallite size, pore volume, and pore size. Ceria synthesized with cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate and CTAB in a water:ethanol mixture using sodium hydroxide showed to be the most effective at providing a thermally stable product. Doping the catalyst with titanium increased the thermal stability significantly. Select samples were run in a variety of fuel to oxygen ratios to determine the best conditions in which we could perform partial methane oxidation to recuperate hydrogen gas. Most of the experiments show oxygen depletion with minor changes in other gas levels indicating that there is no oxidation occurring. Curiously the oxygen levels do decrease. There is a possibility that there is a reaction occurring initially at room temperature and being exacerbated with further temperature increase.

Book excerpt: Both dry reforming of methane (DRM) and low-temperature water-gas shift (LT-WGS) processes can be integrated into a fuel cell plant and are utilised for the production of hydrogen as an important energy source for fuel cells. Improvement of current catalytic systems, and identification and development of alternative catalysts for DRM and LT-WGS reactions have formed the basis of this study. In the first stage of the work, the influence of WO3 on a Pt/CeO2 catalyst was investigated for the dry reforming of methane. It was found that Pt/CeO2 catalysts loaded with WO3 at 10 mol% to 20 mol% were very stable during 20 hours of dry reforming of methane operation in comparison to a commercial Ni catalyst. However further addition of WO3 (>70%) promoted coking on the Pt/CeO2 sample, ultimately leading to catalyst deactivation. It was also desirable to develop catalysts with higher activity to reduce operating cost, thus the physicochemical properties of different materials were assessed to identify parameters important for LT-WGS activity. Copper catalysts on metal oxide support (CeO2, ZnO, TiO2, SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO and SnO2) were screened, while characterisation showed the catalyst adsorbing H2O and CO was crucial in generating LT-WGS activity, with Cu/ZnO attaining the highest LT-WGS activity. Lanthanum (La) was known to have high affinity for H2O, hence the effects of La doping on Cu/ZnO catalysts for use in LT-WGS reaction was investigated. The findings indicated the La promoter improved activity at a loading of 2.3 wt%, above which the activity significantly decreased. A systematic investigation has also been conducted on the effects of oxygen introduction on the Cu-based and Pt-based catalysts during LT-WGS operation with particular attention on the pyrophoricity (i.e. vulnerability to oxidative sintering) of the catalysts, and the impacts on key material characteristics. The objective was to examine whether the catalysts were suitable for fuel cell applications. It was observed that the Cu-based catalysts were pyrophoric and therefore not a suitable catalyst. No pyrophoricity was observed for Pt-based catalysts. Pt/CeO2 was the only catalyst that retained its activity, displaying no loss in specific surface area or metal dispersion throughout the entire process, rendering it a suitable candidate for fuel cell systems.
