Book excerpt: Unpleasant, uncomfortable, and unexplained side effects? Drug Muggers is your side effect solution. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs help millions of people with devastat-ing diseases and chronic conditions. But in the process, these medications can also deplete the body's natural stores of vitamins, minerals, and hormones—the very nutrients you need to keep energy levels high, fend off infections, and be healthy. Pharmacist Suzy Cohen calls these medications "drug muggers," and she says it's essential to replenish what a drug mugger steals from your body in order to feel your best and avoid side effects. Not understanding the drug-mugging effect may lead to new "diseases" and possibly catastrophic health con-sequences. You'll discover: • How to relieve uncomfortable or potentially serious side effects • How to remain compliant with your medication and still feel well • Which foods and drinks to avoid if you take certain medications • How to install a nutrient security system with vitamins, minerals, and food choices Plus! • Improve your energy levels • Learn which minerals you need if you take heartburn medicine • Improve digestion and relieve constipation with a simple nutrient • Discover the antioxidant you must have to save your heart • Get your hair and nails to grow faster by replenishing nutrients • Find out which vitamins and minerals are the purest and highest quality • Learn which vitamins outperform medications in some cases Drug Muggers is an eye-opener! It reveals why you may be feeling so poorly and how to improve your well-being with affordable nutrients that are sold over the counter. You can (and will) improve the way you feel—whether or not you take medicine!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life sometimes seems illogical. Individuals do strange things: take drugs, have unprotected sex, mug each other. Love seems irrational, and so does divorce. On a larger scale, life seems no fairer or easier to fathom: Why do some neighborhoods thrive and others become ghettos? Why is racism so persistent? Why is your idiot boss paid a fortune for sitting behind a mahogany altar? Thorny questions–and you might be surprised to hear the answers coming from an economist. But award-winning journalist Tim Harford likes to spring surprises. In this deftly reasoned book, he argues that life is logical after all. Under the surface of everyday insanity, hidden incentives are at work, and Harford shows these incentives emerging in the most unlikely places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often seen as a political sop to the racial fears of white voters, aggressive policing and draconian sentencing for illegal drug possession and related crimes have led to the imprisonment of millions of African Americans—far in excess of their representation in the population as a whole. Michael Javen Fortner shows in this eye-opening account that these punitive policies also enjoyed the support of many working-class and middle-class blacks, who were angry about decline and disorder in their communities. Black Silent Majority uncovers the role African Americans played in creating today’s system of mass incarceration. Current anti-drug policies are based on a set of controversial laws first adopted in New York in the early 1970s and championed by the state’s Republican governor, Nelson Rockefeller. Fortner traces how many blacks in New York came to believe that the rehabilitation-focused liberal policies of the 1960s had failed. Faced with economic malaise and rising rates of addiction and crime, they blamed addicts and pushers. By 1973, the outcry from grassroots activists and civic leaders in Harlem calling for drastic measures presented Rockefeller with a welcome opportunity to crack down on crime and boost his political career. New York became the first state to mandate long prison sentences for selling or possessing narcotics. Black Silent Majority lays bare the tangled roots of a pernicious system. America’s drug policies, while in part a manifestation of the conservative movement, are also a product of black America’s confrontation with crime and chaos in its own neighborhoods.

Book excerpt: So many diet programs emphasize a gimmick--counting calories, cutting back on carbs--in order to lose weight. Although these measures may result in weight loss, the weight often comes back and your health may be compromised in the process. In order to lose weight safely and easily, you must change the way you view diet and weight loss: Losing weight is not just about getting thinner...it's about gaining health. Perfect Health: The Natural Way is about feeding your body what it was designed to eat. This program is not about calorie-counting or deprivation, but about eating an abundance of good, healthy food and understanding what your body needs. By concentrating on getting healthy instead of dieting, you will not just lose weight but radiate health and vitality. Combining scientific findings and common sense, Mary-Ann Shearer clears up the confusion surrounding various diets and explains what we need to eat in order to gain total health: What is the "perfect food" that our bodies are designed to eat? Do we really need animal protein in order to be healthy? What is the truth about healthy fats? How does fasting help the body heal? This book explains not just what we should eat and why, but also offers valuable suggestions on how to integrate this new way of eating into your lifestyle. Included is a section featuring delicious, easy-to-prepare, healthy recipes that will help you begin your journey to PERFECT HEALTH!

Book excerpt: An astonishing account of Cuban exiles, CIA informants, and cocaine traffickers in Florida by the New York Times–bestselling author of South and West. In Miami, the National Book Award–winning author of The Year of Magical Thinking looks beyond postcard images of fluorescent waters, backlit islands, and pastel architecture to explore the murkier waters of a city on the edge. From Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs invasion to Lee Harvey Oswald and the Kennedy assassination to Oliver North and the Iran–Contra affair, Joan Didion uncovers political intrigues and shadowy underworld connections, and documents the US government’s “seduction and betrayal” of the Cuban exile community in Dade County. She writes of hotels that offer “guerrilla discounts,” gun shops that advertise Father’s Day deals, and a real-estate market where “Unusual Security and Ready Access to the Ocean” are perks for wealthy homeowners looking to make a quick escape. With a booming drug trade, staggering racial and class inequities, and skyrocketing murder rates, Miami in the 1980s felt more like a Third World capital than a modern American city. Didion describes the violence, passion, and paranoia of these troubled times in arresting detail and “beautifully evocative prose” (The New York Times Book Review). A vital report on an immigrant community traumatized by broken dreams and the cynicism of US foreign policy, Miami is a masterwork of literary journalism whose insights are timelier and more important than ever.
