Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy-duty wheeled vehicles (HDWVs) are all-wheel-drive vehicles that carry 25 tons or more and have three or more axles. They transport heavy, bulky cargo such as raw minerals, timber, construction materials, pre-fabricated modules, weapons, combat vehicles, and more. HDWVs are used in a variety of industries (mining, logging, construction, energy) and are critical to a country’s economy and defense. These vehicles have unique development requirements due to their high loads, huge dimensions, and specific operating conditions. Hauling efficiencies can be improved by increasing vehicle load capacity; however capacities are influenced by legislation, road limits, and design. Designing HDWVs differs from other multi-purpose all-wheel-drive vehicles. The chassis must be custom-designed to suit the customer’s particular purpose. The number of axles is another variable, as well as which ones are driving and which are driven. Tires are also customizable. Translated by SAE from Russian, this book narrates the history of HDWVs and presents the theory and calculations required to design them. It summarizes results of the authors’ academic research and experience and presents innovative technical solutions used for electric and hydrostatic transmissions, steering systems, and active safety of these vehicles. The book consists of three parts. Part one covers HDWV design history and general design methods, including basic vehicle design, and evaluating HDWV use conditions. Part one also covers general operation requirements and consumer needs, and a brief analysis of structural components of existing HDWVs and prototypes. Part two outlines information needs for designing HDWVs. Part three reviews basic theory and calculation of innovative technical solutions, as well as special requirements for component parts. This comprehensive title provides the following information about HDWVs: • History of design and manufacture. • Manufacturers’ summary design data. • Background data on sample vehicles. • Component calculation examples. • Overview of motion theory, which is useful in design and placement of bulky cargo.

If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book excerpt: This research note examines the effects of time driving on truck drivers' behavior in a range of different following maneuvers, and the relationship between speed and time headway in steady-state following. Three types of driving condition are included: normal, two-vehicle convoy, and unpredictable shift onset and duration. Results of the experiments were that drivers, when adjusting headway in most types of following maneuvers, take account of the probability of leading vehicle deceleration (adopting a longer headway when the possibility of such deceleration is relatively high), and of variations in ongoing capability (adopting a longer headway when capability is perceived as less than optimal). Results also indicate that drivers show a preference for a headway of about 70 feet, almost irrespective of their speed. These findings have been interpreted within the framework of a behavioral analysis of the task of driving. Implications for driver safety, selection, and training, and for driving practice are outlined. An evaluation of time headway as a measure of driver performance is presented, and some issues for future research are identified. In particular, it is suggested that much more emphasis could usefully be placed on the identification of those rewards which reinforce both safe and dangerous driving, with a view toward greater control of the driver's reward system. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truck driver safety was studied under conditions of prolonged normal driving, prolonged continuous convoy during, and continuous convoy during under conditions of task uncertainity. In all experiments drivers were required to drive an experimental truck for four consecutive days. Dependent variables were driver performance, self ratings, and endocrine changes. Apart from changes over time, where possible the effects of age and time of work period onset were determined. Symptoms of fatigue were most typical of the end of the driving shift, becoming evident from about the 9th hour of driving, and were particularly characteristic of older drivers on a shift finishing at 02.30 hours. Nevertheless the requirement to drive 11 hours per day for 4 consecutive days did not lead to conspicuous deterioration in driving performance under normal driving conditions. Even under continuous convoy driving such prolonged work did not produce impairment but elicited compensatory adjustments toward the end of the late shift. Finally, task uncertainity was not found to induce earlier fatigue. Drivers appeared to adjust to this condition by covertly anticipating a demand in excess of actual requirement. A behavioural analysis of the driving task was proposed and among other features its implications for driver fatigue and traffic accidents were discussed. (Author).
