Book excerpt: Russia is considered to be one of the four BRIC emerging markets and was, due to its history, one of the fastest growing economies during the last 20 years. To this day, Russia has been sought out by investors for its special market environment, the exceptional opportunities and attractive returns. The reasons for those high returns and the historically high volatility will be explained throughout this master thesis. Furthermore, various macroeconomic and financial market related factors will be examined and their influence on the returns of the Russian equity market, represented by the main indices, measured. A principal component analysis will be conducted to reduce the dimensionality of the data and increase the statistical significance of the models used. The main research question for this thesis is Which factors have a statistically significant influence on the returns of the RTSI and RTSTR?. The main findings are that the worldwide equity indices, oil and gas prices as well as the Russian rubble exchange rate are having a significant influence on the returns of the Russian equity indices. This leads to the conclusion that Russia is an attractive market for investors, who are willing to accept those risk factors and take them into account during their decision-making process. *****Russia is considered to be one of the four BRIC emerging markets and was, due to its history, one of the fastest growing economies during the last 20 years. Book excerpt: In 2015, faced with declining oil prices, the weakening ruble and the outflow of funds of foreign portfolio investors, the Russian stock market found itself in a slump; in fact, this situation has started eight years ago, during the 2008 crisis. This negative trend was augmented by the continuing decline of the share market's liquidity in the Moscow Exchange. This was in part a reflection of the general downward trend in the investment attractiveness of the stock markets in the BRICS countries, but more specifically - the upshot of the troubles experienced by Russia's economy due to the low development level of domestic institutional investors. The conservative attitude towards investment in Russian shares displayed by foreign portfolio investors for a period of more than two years already is indicative of their doubts with regard to the prospects of economic growth in Russia. In view of such conditions, the economic growth and recovery in the Russian stock market can rely only on the domestic savings system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences Köthen, course: International Banking ans Finance, language: English, abstract: The stock exchange market is one of the key mechanisms for attracting monetary ressources for investment, economy modernisation and stimulation of the production growth in a country. At the same time the world stock exchange markets can be a source of financial instability and even of macroeconomic and social shocks. Esspecialy volatible to economic shocks are the stock exchanges of transitional economies, such as Russia, which was characterised as a one of the most risky countries in early 90 ies. The transition of Russia from a plan to a market economy has caused increasing interest to stock exchanges as an important component of the stock market. Russian economists came to conclusion that stock exchange market is the nervous terminations of economy and of all spheres of the life of society. These nervous terminations react to the depth of the processes occuring in an organism, much earlier, than the organism itself. Therefore the stock exchange market is the lead indicator of what will occur in economy. But imperfection of the Russian legislation, absence of culture of corporate management, lacks in system of disclosing information and legal base demanding completion are the basic features of the exchange stock market in Russia. The purpose of my assigment, therefore, is to analyse the current competitive position of Russia on the world stock market, to reveal problems of modern Russian stock exchanges and to find out the reasons of their occurrence. The efficiency of the stock exchange in Russia will be assessed according to the models applied in the financial literature. In order to reach this target first we have to look at the theoretical aspects of the core essence and main functions of stock exchanges.

Book excerpt: Privatizing Russia offers an inside look at one of the most remarkable reforms in recent history. Having started on the back burner of Russian politics in the fall of 1991, mass privatization was completed on July 1, 1994, with two thirds of the Russian industry privately owned, a rapidly rising stock market, and 40 million Russians owning company shares. The authors, all key participants in the reform effort, describe the events and the ideas driving privatization. They argue that successful reformers must recognize privatization as a process of depoliticizing firms in the face of massive opposition: making the firm responsive to market rather than political influences. The authors first review the economic theory of property rights, identifying the political influence on firms as the fundamental failure of property rights under socialism. They detail the process of coalition building and compromise that ultmately shaped privatization. The main elements of the Russian program -- corporatization, voucher use, and voucher auctions -- are described, as is the responsiveness of privatized firms to outside investors. Finally, the market values of privatized assets are assessed for indications of how much progress the country has made toward reforming its economy. In many respects, privatization has been a great success. Market concepts of property ownership and corporate management are shaking up Russian firms at a breathtaking pace, creating powerful economic and political stimuli for continuation of market reforms. At the same time, the authors caution, the political landscape remains treacherous as old-line politicians reluctantly cede their property rights and authority over firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we know a great deal about the benefits of regional integration, there is a knowledge gap when it comes to areas with weak, dysfunctional, or nonexistent regional fabric in political and economic life. Further, deliberate “un-regioning,” applied by actors external as well as internal to a region, has also gone unnoticed despite its increasingly sophisticated modern application by Russia in its peripheries. This volume helps us understand what Anna Ohanyan calls “fractured regions” and their consequences for contemporary global security. Ohanyan introduces a theory of regional fracture to explain how and why regions come apart, consolidate dysfunctional ties within the region, and foster weak states. Russia Abroad specifically examines how Russia employs regional fracture as a strategy to keep states on its periphery in Eurasia and the Middle East weak and in Russia's orbit. It argues that the level of regional maturity in Russia’s vast vicinities is an important determinant of Russian foreign policy in the emergent multipolar world order. Many of these fractured regions become global security threats because weak states are more likely to be hubs of transnational crime, havens for militants, or sites of protracted conflict. The regional fracture theory is offered as a fresh perspective about the post-American world and a way to broaden international relations scholarship on comparative regionalism.

Book excerpt: This book captures the essence of the period when Russians and Americans collaborated in creating new structures of government and new businesses in completely uncharted conditions. It presents the experiences of key American participants in late Soviet and post-Soviet Russia during a time when Americans thought anything was possible in Russia. Using an analytic framework of foreground ideas (Western, liberal, and neo-liberal) and background forces (Russian cultural influences, nationalism, and lingering Soviet ideology), it examines the ideas and intentions of the people involved. First-person interviews with consultants, businesspeople, and citizen diplomats help capture the essence of this turbulent reform period through the eyes of those who experienced it and present the importance of this experience as a piece of the puzzle in understanding contemporary Russia. It will be an invaluable resource for students of international relations, Russian Studies majors, researchers, and members of the general public who are trying to understand the evolution of the current antagonism between the United States and Russia.

Book excerpt: Russia is now once again one of the ten largest economies in the world (representing around 70% of Germany's GDP in purchasing power parity in 2007). In addition, Russia is the third largest trading partner of the EU, the fourth largest trade partner of the eurozone and an essential energy supplier to the EU. This recovery makes Russia an economic - and political - actor that cannot be ignored. In this authoritative new book, Lúcio Vinhas de Souza, desk officer for Russia in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, reviews the country's evolving macroeconomic performance and structural policy framework, from the difficult days of the recession in the early transition period and the 1998 crisis to Russia's sustained and robust growth since 1999. He outlines the remaining reform priorities in Russia and concludes with pragmatic policy recommendations for the reform agenda.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores discussions and practice around corporate governance in Russia from the early 1990s until 2018. It covers three major aspects of corporate governance theory and practice: a vision of corporate governance in Russia in the context of global trends and challenges, the general perception of corporate governance in Russia, and the real nature of Russia’s corporate community from the viewpoint of its corporate governance practices. It provides a unique complex analysis and detailed description of how corporate governance has been perceived by both Russian regulators and the business community, and how it has been applied in Russian companies. This analysis covers the period of over 25 years: from early attempts at directing transfer and implanting the Western model of corporate governance to the nascent Russian big private business, up to the period of resurgence of the state as the dominant player both in Russian society and its economy at large. It gives an understanding of what corporate governance is in Russia in the days of "sovereign democracy" and confrontation with the West. It explains how cultural, political, economic and institutional factors have shaped corporate governance in Russia. The authors provide insights into such aspects of Russian corporate governance framework and practices as regulatory philosophy and enforcement, ownership structure, the role of the state, the impact of unfriendly domestic business climate, how the value of corporate governance is perceived in Russian context, etc. Predominantly, the book paints an interesting picture of how the "sovereign corporate governance" model has been shaped in Russia. This book will be useful not just for experts in corporate governance and investors, but also for those who have an interest in modern Russia at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continued existence of the Russian defence and arms industry (OPK) was called into question following the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Industry experts cited the lack of a domestic market, endemic corruption, and excess capacity within the industry as factors underpinning its predicted demise. However, the industry’s export customers in China, India and Iran during those early years became the OPK’s saving grace. Their orders introduced hard currency back into the industry and went a long way to preventing the forecasted OPK collapse. Although pessimistic predictions continued to plague the OPK throughout the 1990s, the valuable export dollars provided the OPK the breathing space it needed to claw back its competitive advantage as an arms producer. That revival has been further underpinned by a new political commitment, various research and development initiatives, and the restoration of defence industry as a tool of Russian foreign policy. The short-term future of the Russian OPK looks promising. The rising domestic defence order is beginning to challenge the export market as the OPK’s most important customer. Meanwhile, exports will be safeguarded by continued foreign demand for niche Russian defence products. Although the long-term future of the OPK is more difficult to predict, Russia’s solid research and development foundation and successful international joint military ventures suggest that the current thriving trend in exports is likely to continue. Russia represents the next generation of affordable and rugged military equipment for the arsenals of the developing world. Coupled with Russia’s growing ability to rearm itself through higher oil prices and a more streamlined defence industry, the future of the OPK looks bright.
