Book excerpt: The 20th century's greatest poet was a guy from L.A. called Hank, who talked straight, drank hard, faced truth, and exposed beauty and vulnerability like no other in his place and time. Drinking with Bukowski is a celebration of that utterly original voice featuring contributions from everyone from the women who loved him to the Hollywood cognoscenti who courted him, from writers who admired him and actors who tried to emulate him to the barflies, strippers, gangsters, poets, crazies, and dreamers who knew him: Raymond Carver, Wanda Coleman, Harold Norse, Michael C. Ford, and Paul Vangelisti pay homage and recount the Dionysian days of L.A. poetry; record producer Harvey Robert Kubernik and journalist Barry Miles remember capturing Buk on vinyl for the first time; novelist Steve Abee remembers the early days of L.A.'s underground newspapers - Open City and the L.A. Free Press - Bukowski's early stomping grounds.

Book excerpt: Beer goggles, whiskey staggers, and a martini for a muse create an old-fashioned cocktail of toughness in this saloon-centered book of verse. When it’s time to wind down at the end of the day, the comfort of a neighborhood dive can’t be beat. But when a poet starts downing drinks, the scribbled marks on his bar napkin result in a raw and rough-hewn look at man’s most heartfelt emotions. And with alcohol-driven acuity, this book helps every whistle-wetter, day-drinker, and bartender find new enjoyment in the hardships and happiness of mundane existence. From hilarious haiku to self-loathing limericks, soul-searcher and award-winning writer Randall McNair’s carefully honed craft shines in this drunkenly introspective measure of human consciousness. Covering a wide range of themes that confront the absurdities of life head-on, this collection showcases his willingness to drink the dregs and come back for more. If you’ve ever thought of poets as staid or incomprehensible, the burn of McNair’s high-proof stanzas will transform your viewpoint and take you on an unforgettable journey. Last Call is the third volume in the Bar Poems series of vividly chaotic verse. If you like honest humor, dark insights, and rhyming under the influence, then you’ll love Randall McNair’s top-shelf shot of poetry. Buy Last Call and stagger home to wisdom today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eating and drinking and the rituals that go with them are at least as important as loving in most people’s lives, yet for every hundred anthologies of poems about love, hardly one is devoted to the pleasures of the table. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry abundantly fills the gap. All kinds of foods and beverages are laid out in these pages, along with picnics and banquets, intimate suppers and quiet dinners, noisy parties and public celebrations–in poems by Horace, Catullus, Hafiz, Rumi, Rilke, Moore, Nabokov, Updike, Mandelstam, Stevens, and many others. From Sylvia Plath’s ecstatic vision of juice-laden berries in “Blackberrying” to D. H. Lawrence’s lush celebration of “Figs,” from the civilized comfort of Noël Coward’s “Something on a Tray” to the salacious provocation of Swift’s “Oysters,” from Li Po on “Drinking Alone” to Baudelaire on “The Soul of the Wine,” and from Emily Dickinson’s “Forbidden Fruit” to Elizabeth Bishop’s “A Miracle for Breakfast,” Eat, Drink, and Be Merry serves up a tantalizing and variegated literary feast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damaged by Dames and Drinking is a lavishly illustrated collection of haiku, one line poems and streetwise observations on bartenders, the drinking life and New York City. A collection of poems that begin with a jolt: "Alcohol's magic is murder by degrees/ slow enough to be irresistible." The short poems explore dark dive bars and in brief thumbnail sketches, the women who work in them. Many of whom agreed to be photographed for this book. Yet it is the poems that speak the loudest. RpVerlaine's arresting images show an eye for lyrical detail: "closing time/ the bar empty as Casanova/ going up the stairs alone." Yet, this 46 pg. 62 poem collection also deals with relationships and a love for New York City the poet does not glamorize: "The young fisherman/bringing home what they've caught/ from street hookers." Which is not to say there isn't a lot of humor in this poetry. Excessive drinking can often lead to tragic/ comic events: "Debating wisdom/ of gifting her Christmas knives/ after vomiting in her dresser/I mistook for toilet." These vignettes like the poems of the bartenders are illustrated with color photographs of models that together form a loose narrative where the author tries to quit drinking, joins/ quits A.A. and drifts through various relationships. They are documented with bemused detachment and sly insight: "Sure, no strings attached/ shows you how even bondage/ gets complicated." Written in the spring of 2016 and covering the preceding eight years, Damaged by Dames & Drinking is urban, accessible, wise and often laugh out loud funny. Inspired by artists as diverse as Ikkyu, Charles Bukowski, Lou Reed, Richard Brautigan and the comedy of Mitch Hedberg. It is a collection of poems and pictures which capture a place and time, yet endeavors to remind one at every turn, what it costs.

Book excerpt: The definitive collection of works on a subject that inspired and haunted Charles Bukowski for his entire life: alcohol Charles Bukowski turns to the bottle in this revelatory collection of poetry and prose that includes some of the writer’s best and most lasting work. A self-proclaimed “dirty old man,” Bukowski used alcohol as muse and as fuel, a conflicted relationship responsible for some of his darkest moments as well as some of his most joyful and inspired. In On Drinking, Bukowski expert Abel Debritto has collected the writer’s most profound, funny, and memorable work on his ups and downs with the hard stuff—a topic that allowed Bukowski to explore some of life’s most pressing questions. Through drink, Bukowski is able to be alone, to be with people, to be a poet, a lover, and a friend—though often at great cost. As Bukowski writes in a poem simply titled “Drinking,”: “for me/it was or/is/a manner of/dying/with boots on/and gun/smoking and a/symphony music background.” On Drinking is a powerful testament to the pleasures and miseries of a life in drink, and a window into the soul of one of our most beloved and enduring writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an attempt to identify and describe the distinctive features of the poetic style of the acclaimed medieval Andalusian poet Ibn Khafaājah, who has been credited with starting a new school of poetry, in Andalus and elsewhere. It offers a close reading of his poetry, concentrating on the three basic elements of style — imagery, rhetorical devices, and structural patterns. It shows how Ibn Khafājah creatively uses the poetic tradition available to him to form new images and scenes, create multi-layered poems, and bestow different levels of unity and coherence on his poems. The study demonstrates some of the ways by which the various elements of style are combined and interrelated, to produce original, meaningful, and highly moving poems in the Khafajian style.
