Book Synopsis The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists by : Joel McIver
Download or read book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists written by Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists is a controversial and much-needed guide to the world of metal guitar, featuring the most accomplished performers from the vast legions of metal. As well as celebrating the classic metal musicians who have defined the scene since the 1970s, author Joel McIver delves deep into the modern thrash metal, death metal, black metal, doom metal, power metal and battle metal movements to unearth those players for whom no tremolo divebomb is too high and no tuning is too low. This book is no mere list for geeks, though. McIver's objective in writing this book is to recognise the incredible skills that these players possess. Moreover, although they're all masters of sweep picking, fretboard tapping and the other tricks of the modern shredder, these players are far from simple speed freaks: The 100 Greatest... makes a point of featuring players whose feel and instinct for the values of metal outweigh mere technical mastery. If you've ever wielded a tennis rack in anger in front of a bedroom mirror, or even if you're a metal musician yourself, you need this book: the world of the overdriven guitar will never look the same again.

Book Synopsis The Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence by : Hugh Syme
Download or read book The Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence written by Hugh Syme and published by IDW Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly expanded and updated, this beautiful coffee table book delves into the 40-year relationship between Rush and their longtime artist and illustrator, with a foreword by drummer and lyricist Neil Peart! Containing original illustrations, paintings, photography, and the incredible stories behind each album that Hugh Syme has designed with the band since 1975. The book's narration was written by music journalist Stephen Humphries and includes in-depth interviews with each Rush band member and the artist. The Art of Rush also contains entertaining anecdotes and commentary from a wide array of notable musicians, actors, athletes, writers, radio personalities, and Rush insiders about their favorite Rush album covers, which clearly reveals how vital and impactful the visual representation of their music has been through the years. One of the hallmark's of Rush releases is the considerable care and consideration that goes into each one--including the conceptual artwork. Readers may be surprised to discover just how much effort went into each concept and the execution for every album cover! Some of the regaled stories include furtively crossing the border for a guerilla-style shoot for A Farewell to Kings, trying to herd a warren of rabbits for the cover of Presto, descending into the depths of an autopsy lab to find a brain for Hemispheres, and a stunt involving fire, whiskey, and photographer Deborah Samuel for Moving Pictures. But no history of the band's art would be complete without the story of the creation of arguably the band's most iconic image, The Starman from 2112. "From the first time Hugh and I met, we shared a level of communication that would sustain us through all the years of discussing art by long distance," says Rush's Neil Peart. The Art Of Rush is a must for fans of Rush, art, and music everywhere.
Book Synopsis Beyond and Before, Updated and Expanded Edition by : Paul Hegarty
Download or read book Beyond and Before, Updated and Expanded Edition written by Paul Hegarty and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original edition of Beyond and Before extends an understanding of progressive rock by providing a fuller definition of what progressive rock is, was and can be. Called by Record Collector the most accomplished critical overview yet of progressive rock and one of their 2011 books of the year, Beyond and Before moves away from the limited consensus that prog rock is exclusively English in origin and that it was destroyed by the advent of punk in 1976. Instead, by tracing its multiple origins and complex transitions, it argues for the integration of jazz and folk into progressive rock and the extension of prog in Kate Bush, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree and many more. This 10-year anniversary revised edition continues to further unpack definitions of progressive rock and includes a brand new chapter focusing on post-conceptual trends in the 2010s through to the contemporary moment. The new edition discusses the complex creativity of progressive metal and folk in greater depth, as well as new fusions of genre that move across global cultures and that rework the extended form and mission of progressive rock, including in recent pop concept albums. All chapters are revised to keep the process of rethinking progressive rock alive and vibrant as a hybrid, open form.

Book Synopsis Audionarratology by : Jarmila Mildorf
Download or read book Audionarratology written by Jarmila Mildorf and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audionarratology is a new 'postclassical' narratology that explores interfaces of sound, voice, music and narrative in different media and across disciplinary boundaries. Drawing on sound studies and transmedial narratology, audionarratology combines concepts from both while also offering fresh insights. Sound studies investigate sound in its various manifestations from disciplinary angles as varied as anthropology, history, sociology, acoustics, articulatory phonetics, musicology or sound psychology. Still, a specifically narrative focus is often missing. Narratology has broadened its scope to look at narratives from transdisciplinary and transmedial perspectives. However, there is a bias towards visual or audio-visual media such as comics and graphic novels, film, TV, hyperfiction and pictorial art. The aim of this book is to foreground the oral and aural sides of storytelling, asking how sound, voice and music support narrative structure or even assume narrative functions in their own right. It brings together cutting-edge research on forms of sound narration hitherto neglected in narratology: radio plays, audiobooks, audio guides, mobile phone theatre, performance poetry, concept albums, digital stories, computer games, songs.
