Download or read book Careers in Logistics written by Institute for Career Research and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-12 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOGISTICS IS A TERM USED IN BUSINESS to describe the process of getting goods, supplies, equipment, and people where they need to be, when they need to be there. It is a specialized field that involves warehousing, inventory control, distribution, and transportation. Logistics is an often overlooked field that most people do not usually think of when considering a future career. However, it plays a huge role in our economy and our everyday lives. American businesses currently spend more than $1.5 trillion on logistics each year. That gives some indication of how important logistics is to business. It also has a major impact on nearly everyone's daily lives. Without logistics we would not have hospitals, schools, electronics, mail, phones, sporting events, or TV. There would not be any food in the refrigerator either - unless you grew it yourself in your backyard.Logistics managers are in charge of coordinating an organization's supply chain. It is a complex job that requires numerous steps. Using specialized computer software, they determine what and how many items are needed, how they will be acquired, how many will be stored in inventory, how they will be distributed, and what method of transportation will be used for delivery. Throughout the process, it is the logistics manager's responsibility to make sure it all goes smoothly. That often means thinking outside the box and brainstorming with team members to solve problems that are costing time and money. The goal is always to find the fastest, cheapest, and safest way to get things from point A to point B. Logistics managers fill vital roles in organizations of all types and sizes. They work in nearly every industry and many government agencies. Nonprofit organizations, especially those involved in disaster relief, also depend on them to distribute lifesaving supplies to hot spots around the globe. The military also relies heavily on good logistics. In fact, the armed forces are where many logistics managers obtain their skills. The number of jobs for logistics managers is growing, while employers often have trouble attracting new candidates. On any given day, there are thousands of job openings. The problem is not lack of rewards - the average pay for an experienced logistics manager is $100,000, not counting bonuses and other perks. It is because most people do not know about the excellent opportunities that await qualified candidates. How can you make yourself qualified? The surest way is to study logistics in college. Most employers want to see a bachelor's degree, but even a two-year associate degree or technical certificate is enough to get started. Employers also want to see motivation. An enthusiastic candidate with drive and leadership skills will always capture the attention of employersDo you love big trucks, trains, ships, and planes? Are you a people person who enjoys the camaraderie of working closely within a team? Logistics managers are in demand and people from all kinds of backgrounds are welcome to start in basic roles and work their way up. If you can multitask, handle responsibilities, and deal with pressure, you could have a secure future working in a comfortable office, or traveling the world doing exciting and challenging work.

Book Synopsis Economic Development for Everyone by : Mark M. Miller
Download or read book Economic Development for Everyone written by Mark M. Miller and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we create employment, grow businesses, and build greater economic resilience in our low-income communities? How do we create economic development for everyone, everywhere – including rural towns, inner-city neighborhoods, aging suburbs, and regions such as Appalachia, American Indian reservations, the Mexican border, and the Mississippi Delta – and not just in elite communities? Economic Development for Everyone collects, organizes, and reviews much of the current research available on creating economic development in low-income communities. Part I offers an overview of the harsh realities facing low-income communities in the US today; their many economic and social challenges; debates on whether to try reviving local economies vs. relocating residents; and current trends in economic development that emphasize high-tech industry and high levels of human capital. Part II organizes the sprawling literature of applied economic development research into a practical framework of five dynamic dimensions: empower your residents: begin with basic education; enhance your community: build on existing assets; encourage your entrepreneurs; diversify your economy; and sustain your development. This book, assembled and presented in a unified framework, will be invaluable for students and new researchers of economic development in low-income communities, and will offer new perspectives for established researchers, professional economic developers and planners, and public officials. Development practitioners and community leaders will also find new ideas and opportunities, along with a broad view on how the many complex parts of economic development interconnect.

Book Synopsis Save American Jobs by : abraham K Turkson
Download or read book Save American Jobs written by abraham K Turkson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope has always said to Americans tomorrow will be better than today. Always, until now. Because if you are a computer programmer, engineer, accountant, manager or a factory worker, you are filled with fear, instead of hope, for your job may disappear overnight. If you are a small sized entrepreneur, the big company you've serviced from the beginning of your existence may call in the middle of the night to inform you they will no longer buy from you; they are buying from overseas. And these are the stories unfolding in communities across America. Fear, not hope, is stalking many an American. The information superhighway that was supposed to have been the road to high-paying jobs for Americans has instead turned into one on which offshore outsourcing is killing many jobs. If it is allowed to continue, America's foundation built over many generations will be weakened. To save existing jobs in America and create new ones, Dr. Abraham Turkson has suggested new ideas to reduce costs to make businesses in America more competitive, provide private healthcare for all Americans, and stop oil imports. And none of the suggestions involves raising taxes. Hope must be reborn across America.
