Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All immigrants to America have a story with the American Dream, a story sometimes intimately intertwined with personal dreams. My story might be a surprising, if not maybe an unexpected one diverging from the usual account of pitiful existence in Haiti's slums or that of struggle for adaptation to America's way of life by one of Haiti's "boat people" who landed on South Florida's coast. It is a story that starts from the lower plains of the Artibonite Valley in Haiti with a dream from my great grandfather, Joizil Estimé, and continues in the United States, ultimately in Powell, Ohio. It is the story of a Haitian immigrant born in the small coastal town of Saint-Marc, Haiti. It evolves with my experiences growing up in my native country where my formative years were influenced by a connection to a diverse sociocultural environment. It progresses with my interaction with other societal enclaves in foreign lands like Germany and ultimately in the United States. It is an account of dreams fulfilled or unfulfilled, due not only to factors such as the convergence of different motivational agents (dreambuilders), the winds blowing on corporate America, whether in Haiti or the United States, but also to different conditions such as country of origin, globalization, social class, and Afro-ethnicity in America (dreamkillers). It is the story of coping with life changes, of integration into the American mainstream, of successes and disappointments of an immigrant from Haiti. But it is more than the story of an immigrant; it also reflects in a way the struggle of all immigrants coping with the pursuit of the American Dream and the quest for adaptation and continuous learning. It relates to all those who have wrestled with their dreams, those who have learned to make the best out of life's circumstances and keep a positive outlook in the era we live in. Dreambuilders, dreamkillers are in all walks of life.

Book excerpt: A Good Morning America and PureWow Best Book of January A Goodreads Buzziest Book of the New Year A January Indie Next Pick & Debutiful Most Anticipated Book of 2023 “A marvel.” —Kevin Wilson “Funny, moving, and often deliciously cynical.” —Tiphanie Yanique After living in the US for years, Maneka Roy returns home to India to mourn the loss of her mother and finds herself in a new world. The booming city of Hrishipur where her father now lives is nothing like the part of the country where she grew up, and the more she sees of this new, sparkling city, the more she learns that nothing—and no one—here is as it appears. Ultimately, it will take an unexpected tragic event for Maneka and those around her to finally understand just how fragile life is in this city built on aspirations. Written from the perspectives of ten different characters, Oindrila Mukherjee’s incisive debut novel explores class divisions, gender roles, and stories of survival within a society that is constantly changing and becoming increasingly Americanized. It’s a story about India today, and people impacted by globalization everywhere: a tale of ambition, longing, and bitter loss that asks what it really costs to try and build a dream.

Book excerpt: Petroski reveals the science and engineering--not to mention the politics, egotism, and sheer magic--behind America's great bridges, particularly those constructed during the great bridge-building era starting in the 1870s and continuing through the 1930s. It is the story of the men and women who built the St. Louis, the George Washington, and the Golden Gate bridges, drawing not only on their mastery of numbers but on their gifts for persuasion and self-promotion. It is an account of triumphs and ignominious disasters (including the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which literally twisted itself apart in a high wind). And throughout this grandly engaging book, Petroski lets us see how bridges became the "symbols and souls" of our civilization, as well as testaments to their builders' vision, ingenuity, and perseverance. "Seamlessly linked...With astonishing scope and generosity of view, Mr. Petroski places the tradition of American bridge-building in perspective."--New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippest places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction. Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisanal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America. Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens. The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including: Connoisseurs of good bread and good food. Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence. Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery. Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project. Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.

Book excerpt: BRAVE THINKING is the culmination of more than 40 years of study, and 30 years of teaching this technology of transformation. People struggle with relationships. They struggle with money. They struggle with health. I’ve been coaching first as a minister, then for the last decade as a trainer outside the church world. But teaching, studying, and working in this laboratory called life. I’ve been both a student, and I’ve been a trainer in this laboratory, helping people unlock what it is they would love to have, be, do, give in their life. And helping them understand their capacity to do this. To use brave thinking and tap into the field of infinite possibility, potentiality, and work with a particular dream vision for their lives, so they can begin to see the pattern. Because once you see the pattern of how thoughts become things and how you can take what looks like very little and translate it into something much more – it’s as different as moving from simple addition to squaring in math. When you are working with simple addition, the only way to get to 25 is you must amass 25 ones. When you learn to multiply you find that you only need two 5’s to get to that same result. It takes way less effort and you have way more results. And when you move up the ladder of awareness a little bit further, you see you only need one 5. Brave Thinking will help people recognize that they have everything they need to live a life they love living, and a life that really has meaning and purpose and substance and significance. And I know how to do that. I know how to help them. BRAVE THINKING provides the code to a very different kind of thinking. Either one opens the doors to a potential that is something we are in love with, or something we fear. The purpose of this book is to provide very concrete direct clear simple understandings. Such as the world was flat or other kinds of commonplace thinking and help them recognize how much of that has governed their lives or the lives of people they know. It will show examples of people who dared to think beyond the boundaries of ordinary thinking and who dared to learn a new system of thinking. Rather than being condition based in a way of living life, they began to live a life that is vision-driven. And they came from a vision rather than living from circumstance. Most people think that when the circumstances change, ¡§then I can make a new decision, “then I can have something” “then I can be something,” “then I can do something.” What if it’s just the opposite? When you watch your television, and there are other common examples we’ll use, when you turn on a TV, the picture you are seeing comes from the frequency that your tuner is tuned to. And when you go to a movie theater, the dancing images on the screen are simply reflections of the light passing through the film that’s held before the projector.

Book excerpt: A missing eye. A broken wing. A stolen country. The last job didn't end well. Years go by, and scars fade, but memories only fester. For the animals of the Captain's company, survival has meant keeping a low profile, building a new life, and trying to forget the war they lost. But now the Captain's whiskers are twitching at the idea of evening the score. PRAISE FOR THE BUILDERS "A living, breathing world of vivid, winsome characters hellbent on their blaze of glory and as unforgiving as a runaway train carrying all your friends over a cliff. I haven't cared about animals this much since Watership Down." — Delilah S. Dawson, author of Hit and Wicked as They Come "Nobody does dark like Polansky. The Builders is Redwall meets Unforgiven, combining the endearing wit of Disney's Robin Hood with all the grit and violence of a spaghetti western." — Myke Cole, author of the Shadow Ops series "If Sam Peckinpah and Brian Jacques had a strange peyote ritual and shared a collective dream, it might look something liek this. Brutish, nasty, short — much like life — Polansky's The Builders is also funny, exciting, and extremely original. The Wild Bunch meets Watership Down." — John Hornor Jacobs, author of The Incorruptibles At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: "Lyons delivers the history of a song that has inspired generations of African-Americans to persist and resist in the face of racism and systemic oppression. . . . A heartfelt history of a historic anthem." —Publishers Weekly Now in paperback. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. In Jacksonville, Florida, two brothers, one of them the principal of a segregated, all-black school, wrote the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" so his students could sing it for a tribute to Abraham Lincoln's birthday in 1900. From that moment on, the song has provided inspiration and solace for generations of Black families. Mothers and fathers passed it on to their children who sang it to their children and grandchildren. Known as the Black National Anthem, it has been sung during major moments of the Civil Rights Movement and at family gatherings and college graduations. Inspired by this song's enduring significance, Kelly Starling Lyons and Keith Mallett tell a story about the generations of families who gained hope and strength from the song's inspiring words. —A CCBC Choice —A Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People —An ALSC Notable Children's Book
