Book excerpt: A savvy former street child working at a human rights law office in Mumbai fights for redemption and a chance to live life on her own terms in this fresh, propulsive debut novel about fortune and survival. Named a Loan Stars Top Ten Pick and a CBC Canadian Fiction title to watch. Rakhi is a twenty-three-year-old former street child haunted by the grisly aftermath of an incident that led her to lose her best friend eleven years ago. Constantly reminded she doesn’t belong, Rakhi lives alone in a Mumbai slum, working as a lowly office assistant at Justice For All, a struggling human rights law office headed by the renowned lawyer who gave her a fresh start. Fiercely intelligent and in possession of a sharp wit and an even sharper tongue, Rakhi is nobody’s fool, even if she is underestimated by everyone around her. Rakhi's life isn't much, but she's managing. That is until a fading former Bollywood starlet tries to edge her way back into the spotlight by becoming a celebrity ambassador for Justice For All. Steering the organization into uncharted territories, she demands an internship for her young Canadian family friend, Alex, a Harvard-bound graduate student. Ambitious, persistent, and naive, Alex persuades Rakhi to show him "the real" India. In exchange, he’ll do something to further Rakhi’s dreams in a transaction that seems harmless, at first. As old guilt and new aspirations collide, everything Rakhi once knew to be true is set ablaze. And as the stakes mount, she will come face to face with the difficult choices and moral compromises that people are prepared to make in order to survive, no matter the costs. Reema Patel’s transportive debut novel offers a moving, smart, and arrestingly funny look at the cost of ambition and power in reclaiming one’s story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the reminiscences of my early life and professional career. My earliest recollection begins with an obscure village where my father was working just before his retirement. I did not attend school while in that village. My uncle’s initiative took us to Mysore, the capital of Mysore state at that time. I completed my school and college education there. I then joined India’s top institution and did electrical engineering. Post graduation, I served as a lecturer, design engineer, and plant engineer in several organizations and retired as a general manager in a premier electronics company in India. I have outlined here the challenges I faced during my preliminary and advanced studies. I have tried to describe the peculiarities in the various jobs I held. When I call my book "An Engineer’s Dream," I do not mean the dreams that portray the images or emotions that occur in one’s sleep. I specifically refer to the aims, aspirations, and ambitions of an individual. These may be explicitly stated or be held confidentially within one’s mind. Every person will surely have some aim (s). It may vary from person to person and from time to time for the same person, depending on the circumstances. I have analyzed “My dreams” in the preface to this book. The needed requisites for the fulfillment of one’s dreams are Will, Patience, Perseverance, Self-confidence, and Faith. I am happy to state that I have fulfilled my dreams.

Edie is Aboriginal and Maggie Anglo-Australian; Maggie is good at school, Edie always struggles. No matter how hard she studies, Edie can only scrape a pass and although they promised each other that together they would change the world, when Maggie suddenly gets the chance to leave school and earn money, it's a serious challenge to their friendship. Will it survive? Edie is a natural athlete but she also has a strong spiritual side and now that she is a young woman, it becomes even more important. The women tell her that since she has entered puberty, her body is 'making honey', so there will be big changes to the world around her. It's time for Edie to learn more about the Old Ways - which means confronting her own past. After her mother left, Edie's grandparents took over the role of caring for Edie and her young brother Matty. They are tough and wise, but loving, and so far Edie has escaped the big black government cars that have come for many of the indigenous children in the town, but in PAPERBAGS AND DREAMS, the cars finally catch up with her. Will they tear her family apart? The stand-alone sequel to WHISPER, this is a heartwarming portrait of friendship and reconciliation, and of a society offered the chance to balance the pain of the past with love.

Book excerpt: Written with exceptional grace and empathy, Brahma’s Dream explores the richness of relationships and the mystery of how one life is defined through its connection to others. Set in Bombay amid the turbulence of India’s surge towards independence, Brahma’s Dream tells the story of thirteen-year-old Mohini, an unforgettable character whose medical problems set her apart from the world around her, and give her a wisdom and special place in it. Mohini suffers from a rare form of anemia that gradually diminishes her physically but increases her understanding of life in a way incomprehensible to those who move more easily through it. Under her kind, wry gaze, a family, a city, and a country convulse with idealism and hope. Through Mohini the reader encounters the extraordinary characters who live in her family home, Koleshwar Nivas. Vishnupant, Mohini’s grandfather, is a forward-thinking professor of history who has devoted his life to making sense of India’s past so that the country might fulfil the promise of its future. Keshav, Mohini’s father, who, while embracing the prospect of independence, is eager to hold on to any progress made through British rule. But for both men Mohini is the centre of the universe, as she is for her devoted mother, Kamala, who has sacrificed the intimacy of her marriage to care for her child, and Vasanti, Mohini’s aunt who, having lost the chance at a life beyond the confines of family, looks to her remarkable niece for comfort and understanding. The lives of the Oek family are lived against the backdrop of the confrontation between a far-flung empire and the diminutive Mahatma Gandhi. A joyous and moving novel, astute and reflective, Brahma’s Dream explores the Hindu belief that all life and all events are only a part of a vast continuum, and that momentous political and social change, birth, marriage, and even death, are only a twinkling in the eye of a god.

Book excerpt: If flame-haired Tish OReagan had not accepted a scholarship to study voice production at the Trinity College of Music in Dublin, her parents would have continued to run their 3,000 acre mixed farming property in the Central Western Slopes of New South Wales. However, because she did accept it, her parents, Nell and Padraic, and spirited sister, Louise, accompany her and become temporary residents of Dublin, leaving Ballycahill in the hands of reliable Dominic and cheeky young Hugh. The family bring their unique Australian-ness to all they meet, helping many to find solutions to major problems. Does this bring respect or resentment, and will Louise find healing from her recent broken romance in a Sydney hospital, or will her reluctance to risk being hurt again prove an insurmountable barrier to a new relationship? Will Dominic succeed in helping his young and vulnerable brother through the disillusionment of his first brush with romance, or will he be forever slightly scarred by it? And most importantly, how will Tish, the adored youngest child, handle the constant study and huge diversity of her chosen course, and the harassment of a few jealous students in the Academy? Read this endearing and sometimes humorous story of an ordinary Australian family, placed in an unfamiliar country, and note how each finds a niche there, and manages to retain their true Australian identity through it all.
