Book Synopsis Understanding Children's Drawings by : Michaela Strauss
Download or read book Understanding Children's Drawings written by Michaela Strauss and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 1978-01-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the notes of Hanns Strauss and his collection of 6,000 drawings by 2- to 7-year-olds, this book describes the stages of development of children's drawings by using the framework of Rudolf Steiner's "anthroposophical" science. In the introduction, the early development of children's drawing is compared with works of art left by early civilizations. Three phases of children's drawing are described: (1) Up to 3 years, the process of creation arises in a dreamy way, and the child lives in the movements involved; (2) from 3 to 5 years, the child lets the arising picture take hold of his imagination; and (3) from 5 to 7 years, the child creates a clear interpretation of a theme chosen before beginning to draw. Chapter 1 describes the development of the use of line, while chapter 2 describes the development of the use of color. Chapter 3 describes the increasing role of the imagination and the transition from the use of symbolic representations to narrative/illustrative representations. The last part of chapter 3, "Notes on the Study of Man" (by Wolfgang Schad), explains Rudolf Steiner's ideas about concurrent spiritual and physiological development. Numerous color and black-and-white drawings illustrate the developmental concepts. (CB)

Book Synopsis Drawing on Walls by : Matthew Burgess
Download or read book Drawing on Walls written by Matthew Burgess and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Burgess describes Haring discovering Robert Henri’s The Art Spirit in college (“He felt as if the book was speaking directly to him”), encountering the large paintings of Pierre Alechinsky (he was “blown away”), and recognizing a common impulse in dancers at the West Village’s Paradise Garage (“For Keith, drawing and painting were like dancing. He called it ‘mind-to-hand flow’”). Cochran uses a thick black line to suggest Haring’s creations, and renders figures in a Haring-esque style without seeming gimmicky. Of interest to young readers are Haring’s frequent efforts to involve children in mural-making projects. The story, including a respectful acknowledgement of Haring’s death from AIDS, makes the subject seem immediate and real—and presents a compelling vision of answering the call to create." —Starred Review, Publishers Weekly I would love to be a teacher because I love children and I think that not enough people respect children or understand how important they are. I have done many projects with children of all ages. —Keith Haring Truly devoted to the idea of public art, Haring created murals wherever he went. From Matthew Burgess, the much-acclaimed author of Enormous Smallness, comes Drawing on Walls: A Story of Keith Haring. Often seen drawing in white chalk on the matte black paper of unused advertising space in the subway, Haring’s iconic pop art and graffiti-like style transformed the New York City underground in the 1980s. A member of the LGBTQ community, Haring died tragically at the age of thirty-one from AIDS-related complications. Illustrated in paint by Josh Cochran, himself a specialist in bright, dense, conceptual drawings, this honest, celebratory book honors Haring’s life and art, along with his very special connection with kids.

Book Synopsis Making Sense of Children's Drawings by : John Willats
Download or read book Making Sense of Children's Drawings written by John Willats and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2006-04-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The message of this book is a simple one: children learn to draw by acquiring increasingly complex and effective drawing rules. In this regard, learning to draw is like learning a language, and as with language children use these rules creatively, making infinite use of finite means. Learning to draw is thus, like learning a language, one of the major achievements of the human mind. Theories of perception developed in the second half of the 20th century enable us to construct a new theory of children's drawings that can account for their many strange features. Earlier accounts contained valuable insights, but recent advances in the fields of language, vision, philosophy, and artificial intelligence now make it possible to resolve the many contradictions and confusions inherent in these early writings. John Willats has written a book that is accessible to psychologists, artists, primary and junior schoolteachers, and parents of both gifted and normal children.
