Book excerpt: "Part 1 of the book...deals with the geography of the region and with the biological, linguistic, and archaeological evidence concerning the origins of the Oceanians and their movements into and within the region. Part 2 describes the tools and techniques by which the recent (but not yet markedly Westernized) Oceanians satisfied their basic, pan-human needs, as qualified by their many different, culturally defined, perceptions of those needs...Finally, Part 3 focuses on the varieties of social structures within which those 'technical' activities took place." -from the Prologue

Book excerpt: "Oceania: A Tourism Handbook draws together a wide range of sources to provide a comprehensive handbook of tourism in the Oceania region. As tourism continues to grow in importance and significance for the countries of Oceania, it is important to have a single source of information and reference for tourism. At the same time, it is vital to provide a disciplined analysis of tourism by standardising terminologies and delivering a consistency of approach for all the countries in the region." "The handbook provides an anatomy of tourism in the region by taking a detailed look at each of the three key constituents of Oceania - Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. For each of these regions, tourism demand, supply and organisation have been analysed, as well as a chapter to guide the reader through the tourism statistics sources that are available. The final section of the handbook takes a thematic approach with chapters examining key issues of tourism in the region, including investment, air transport, risk management, land ownership, climate change and tourism education."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Made in Oceania by : Peter Mesenhöller
Download or read book Made in Oceania written by Peter Mesenhöller and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both anthropologists and conservation scientists are fascinated by Oceanic barkcloth, or tapa, as it is known by its generic Polynesian term. Historic tapa designs are often living cultural heritage, but today’s objects also combine content, form and tradition in new ways and are intimately connected with the social and cultural identity of individuals, groups, and even nations. With tapa being completely alien to European traditions, conservation scientists are challenged by the material and its restoration and preservation. Questions of adequate presentation in exhibitions touch upon both disciplines, particularly when cultural requirements of the source communities come into play. This volume brings together presentations given at an interdisciplinary symposium on the social and cultural meanings, conservation and presentation of Oceanic tapa, organised and hosted by the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum of World Cultures and the Institute of Conservation Sciences, Cologne, in 2014. By presenting new, international, cutting-edge research from both disciplines, Made in Oceania offers unique insights into current museum practice, and connects historical research with recent social and cultural developments in the Pacific.

Download or read book Women’s Football in Oceania written by Lee McGowan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the most comprehensive mapping and analysis of women’s football in Oceania and is the first to examine the game’s historical development alongside social, political, and cultural issues, weaving origin stories with players’ day-to-day challenges. Alongside presentation of the contemporary state of play and its overarching narrative of women’s game in the region, the book highlights key issues, discusses established and emergent themes, examines relevant contexts, investigates the status of the game at local and national levels, and lays foundations for further research. Its primary objective is to detail and illustrate the historical, social, and organisational development of the women’s game, including international tournaments, national competitions, and teams in an effort to amplify the efforts of the individuals that made or make a significant contribution to the game. It draws on extensive formal and informal discussion, realises insight, proposes the means and related fields of further investigation, and generates new knowledge alongside the uncovering of old. Women’s Football in Oceania covers key events, actors, and moments and fills a gap in research for scholars of sports history and women’s history.

Download or read book God Is Samoan written by Matt Tomlinson and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian theologians in the Pacific Islands see culture as the grounds on which one understands God. In this pathbreaking book, Matt Tomlinson engages in an anthropological conversation with the work of “contextual theologians,” exploring how the combination of Pacific Islands culture and Christianity shapes theological dialogues. Employing both scholarly research and ethnographic fieldwork, the author addresses a range of topics: from radical criticisms of biblical stories as inappropriate for Pacific audiences to celebrations of traditional gods such as Tagaloa as inherently Christian figures. This book presents a symphony of voices—engaged, critical, prophetic—from the contemporary Pacific’s leading religious thinkers and suggests how their work articulates with broad social transformations in the region. Each chapter in this book focuses on a distinct type of culturally driven theological dialogue. One type is between readers and texts, in which biblical scholars suggest new ways of reading, and even rewriting, the Bible so it becomes more meaningful in local terms. A second kind concerns the state of the church and society. For example, feminist theologians and those calling for “prophetic” action on social problems propose new conversations about how people in Oceania should navigate difficult times. A third kind of discussion revolves around identity, emphasizing what makes Oceania unique and culturally coherent. A fourth addresses the problems of climate change and environmental degradation to sacred lands by encouraging “eco-theological” awareness and interconnection. Finally, many contextual theologians engage with the work of other disciplines— prominently, anthropology—as they develop new discourse on God, people, and the future of Oceania. Contextual theology allows people in Oceania to speak with God and fellow humans through the idiom of culture in a distinctly Pacific way. Tomlinson concludes, however, that the most fruitful topic of dialogue might not be culture, but rather the nature of dialogue itself. Written in an accessible, engaging style and presenting innovative findings, this book will interest students and scholars of anthropology, world religion, theology, globalization, and Pacific studies.

Book Synopsis Navigating Colonial Orders by : Kirsten Alsaker Kjerland
Download or read book Navigating Colonial Orders written by Kirsten Alsaker Kjerland and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwegians in colonial Africa and Oceania had varying aspirations and adapted in different ways to changing social, political and geographical circumstances in foreign, colonial settings. They included Norwegian shipowners, captains, and diplomats; traders and whalers along the African coast and in Antarctica; large-scale plantation owners in Mozambique and Hawai’i; big business men in South Africa; jacks of all trades in the Solomon Islands; timber merchants on Zanzibar’ coffee farmers in Kenya; and King Leopold’s footmen in Congo. This collection reveals narratives of the colonial era that are often ignored or obscured by the national histories of former colonial powers. It charts the entrepreneurial routes chosen by various Norwegians and the places they ventured, while demonstrating the importance of recognizing the complicity of such “non-colonial colonials” for understanding the complexity of colonial history.
