Book excerpt: Drago’s Vendetta By: Jim Meehan Drago’s Vendetta is the story of a man seeking vengeance for the loss of his family in an early World War II bombing. A former fighter pilot, he sees the recovery of a lost fighter plane as the means to take the war to the bombers who have killed his wife and son. The story takes place around a small island near Sicily and intimately chronicles the man’s hatred of the war and the belligerents who have taken his loved ones and made his peaceful home a battleground. Repairing the fighter with the help of trusted local fishermen, he begins flying against both German and British bombers from a hidden strip of beach, keeping his secret from his remaining teenage daughter and the other islanders. A thriving black market supplies him with fuel and ammunition. The British on Malta and the Germans in Sicily soon notice the loss of aircraft to an unmarked fighter and plans are put in motion to find and eliminate it. His missions become more difficult as the Mediterranean air war intensifies. The grieving widower attracts the sympathy and interest of the local school teacher and also a recent widow who find themselves in competition for his attention. Characters in the story also include British, German and Italian air crews, a Sicilian bar girl involved with a German flyer, and the embattled islanders themselves.

Book excerpt: "Whoever said destinies were easy?" ~ Milani Kekoa Selena Aires The peaceful artist life I was going for is getting seriously derailed. Sure. I found my dream cottage nestled against forest trails; plenty of ways to teach art and endless inspiration. The most inspiring? A six-and-a-half-foot blond Adonis whose kisses and primal growls make my toes curl. But the world he’s from includes powerful enemies. It’s a good thing Thomas spent a decade training me as a street fighter. Andras is away when the enemy comes to town, and my skills are put to the test. Then, a dark-haired, blue-eyed stranger shows up and scares the crap out of our attackers before deciding that taking me with him is the best way to keep me safe. Andras Johns My job as an alpha is to keep my pack safe. That’s never been an issue until I mate with a human marked for an epic destiny. Everything I know is being tested and that’s because I’ve never had to make decisions involving the very core of my primal being. But Selena is worth every contest fate throws our way. I just need to find out what my bear will do when the contest involves a rival alpha who wants her as much as I do… because it looks like we’ll need to team up to deal with a resurging conflict barreling Selena’s way. In this second installment, Selena's artist life gets further derailed when she’s embroiled in the world of the supernatural. But when this kickass warrior becomes the target of a prince so old he can tell you the real story of Gilgamesh, she embraces her goddess-bestowed instincts, and her fighting skills, and learns everything she can from the two hotter-than-hot rival alphas who each want to claim her heart.

Book excerpt: It began with an interview that should have been mundane, and it ended with me becoming a foster mom and my boss demanding I uncover evidence to put a man behind bars—for life. I believed I was one of the good ones. Incorruptible. I certainly wasn’t a member of the Dirty Blue like others I knew. Then, I met Drago Acerbi. I soon realized nothing could have prepared me for the consequences of falling in love with the enemy—a dangerous criminal whom I'm supposed to lock up. Yet, I was the one keeping our relationship a secret. Drago knew that. He also knew I had a job to do. What he didn’t know was that the baby I was protecting was his son. At least, he didn’t until my superior discovered our forbidden love affair—and I lost everything. My career. The man I had fallen for. The baby I’d grown to love. A life I didn’t know I wanted. I’d soon learn I wasn’t the only one harboring a secret they wanted to keep hidden from the world. That’s when I found out exactly who Drago Acerbi really was, and it sent a chill down my spine. This book has it all. Scandal. Action-packed suspense and drama. A plot twist that’ll have your jaw dropping. Protective hero vibes. And a kidnapping. It’s detective romance with light mafia/organized crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gomorrah, a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year, Roberto Saviano revealed a true, devastating portrait of Naples, Italy under the rule of the Camorra, a crime organization more powerful and violent than the Mafia. In The Piranhas, now a major motion picture, the international bestselling author returns to his home city with a novel of gang warfare and a young man’s dark desire to rise to the top of Naples’s underworld. Nicolas Fiorillo is a brilliant and ambitious fifteen-year-old from the slums of Naples, eager to make his mark and to acquire power and the money that comes with it. With nine friends, he sets out to create a new paranza, or gang. Together they roam the streets on their motorscooters, learning how to break into the network of small-time hoodlums that controls drug-dealing and petty crime in the city. They learn to cheat and to steal, to shoot semiautomatic pistols and AK-47s. Slowly they begin to wrest control of the neighborhoods from enemy gangs while making alliances with failing old bosses. Nicolas’s strategic brilliance is prodigious, and his cohorts’ rapid rise and envelopment in the ensuing maelstrom of violence and death is riveting and impossible to turn away from. In The Piranhas, Roberto Saviano imagines the lurid glamour of Nicolas’s story with all the vividness and insight that made Gomorrah a worldwide sensation. “With the openhearted rashness that belongs to every true writer, Saviano returns to tell the story of the fierce and grieving heart of Naples.” —Elena Ferrante

This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a chilling scene in the film Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood as the gunman stands over a wounded Gene Hackman, the sheriff, aiming a rifle at his head. "I don't deserve this, to die like this," says Hackman. Eastwood replies, "Deserve's got nothing to do with it," cocks his rifle, and fires point blank at his helpless victim. This scenario dramatically brings home to the viewer what historians have long debated and hundreds of other films and books suggest: the turn-of-the-century West was a violent time and place. Ranchers, miners, deputy sheriffs, teenagers and old men, occasionally even housewives and mothers found themselves at the business end of a shotgun or a .38 revolver. Yet, since western historians tend to portray violence as essentially episodic--frontier gunfights, range wars, vigilante movements, and the like--solid data has been hard to come by. As a beginning point for actually measuring lethal violence and assessing the administration of justice, here at last is a detailed and well-documented study of homicide in the American West. Comparing data from representative areas--Douglas County, Nebraska; Las Animas County, Colorado; and Gila County, Arizona--this book reveals a level of violence far greater than many historians have believed, even surpassing eastern cities like New York and Boston. Clashing cultures and transient populations, a boomtown mentality, easy availability of alcohol and firearms: these and many other factors come under scrutiny as catalysts in the violence that permeated the region. By comparing homicide data, including coroner's inquests, indictments, plea bargains, and sentences across both racial and regional lines, the book also offers persuasive evidence that criminal justice systems of the Old West were weighted heavily in favor of defendants who were white and against those who were African American, Native American, or Mexican. Packed with information, this is a book for students and scholars of western history, social history, criminology, and justice studies. Western history buffs will be captivated by colorful anecdotes about the real West, where guns could and did blaze over anything from love trysts to vendettas to too much foam on the beer. From whatever perspective, all readers are sure to find here a well-constructed framework for understanding the West as it was and for interpreting the region as it moves into the future.

About Alex Stewart's Shooting the Rift: “Stewart makes his [faster than light travel] technology as accessible and relevant as the neuroware, genetic engineering, anti-gravity, and other assorted techno-furniture of the milieu. His various venues . . . are limned with vigor, vividness and vivacity. The personages are all true-to-life, delivering fine banter and plot-propelling dialogue, arising out of fully believable motivations and drives and desires. . . . the best of what ambitious adventure SF has always done and can plainly continue to do.”—Locus “Stewart writes with sly wit. He pokes fun at modern science fiction tropes. His clever writing even satirizes science fiction satire. He combines this with rollicking adventure, original plot twists and unexpected revelations and endings. Shooting the Rift is fun to read. Better still it promises a sequel.”—Galveston County Daily News

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think gunfighter, and Wyatt Earp or Billy the Kid may come to mind, but what of Jim Moon? Joel Fowler? Zack Light? A host of other figures helped forge the gunfighter persona, but their stories have been lost to time. In a sequel to his Deadly Dozen, celebrated western historian Robert K. DeArment now offers more biographical portraits of lesser-known gunfighters—men who perhaps weren’t glorified in legend or song, but who were rightfully notorious in their day. DeArment has tracked down stories of gunmen from throughout the West—characters you won’t find in any of today’s western history encyclopedias but whose careers are colorfully described here. Photos of the men and telling quotations from primary sources make these characters come alive. In giving these men their due, DeArment takes readers back to the gunfighter culture spawned in part by the upheavals of the Civil War, to a time when deadly duels were part of the social fabric of frontier towns and the Code of the West was real. His vignettes offer telling insights into conditions on the frontier that created the gunfighters of legend. These overlooked shooters never won national headlines but made their own contributions to the blood and thunder of the Old West: people less than legends, but all the more fascinating because they were real. Readers who enjoyed DeArment’s Deadly Dozen will find this book equally captivating—as gripping as a showdown, twelve times over.
