Book excerpt: In the city of Wallacgrum, located in the middle of the country of Railam, known for its beautiful meadows and cherry blossom trees, is a place where the great King Fayos shone his benevolent light upon all his people. However, all that changed when the king fell ill and began having ridiculous dreams about the tail of a dragon that can cure anything. As desperate as the king was, his insanity drove him to mandate the whole kingdom to find this tail. However, a young Nubian man named Koldiar and three foolish men intercepted his royal decree and set off to steal this supernatural tail. This story follows Koldiar as he treks through uncomfortable situations and unfortunate events to become the king's holy knight and to find his faith, but despite his goal, he soon finds love in a caramel-skinned woman with diamond-blue eyes named Echo, who will be forced to choose between a love so pure and a love of guilt. Through this journey, Koldiar must be exceptionally careful with Echo, as winning her love is not an easy task because Koldiar would soon find out...she is the tail of old, the tail brightened, the dragon of the blue flame! She is Echo, and this is her tale! Or is it? “Note to layout: image of the dragon picture”

This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories about dragons, serpents, and their slayers make up a rich and varied tradition within ancient mythology and folklore. In this sourcebook, Daniel Ogden presents a comprehensive and easily accessible collection of dragon myths from Greek, Roman, and early Christian sources. Some of the dragons featured are well known: the Hydra, slain by Heracles; the Dragon of Colchis, the guardian of the golden fleece overcome by Jason and Medea; and the great sea-serpent from which Perseus rescues Andromeda. But the less well known dragons are often equally enthralling, like the Dragon of Thespiae, which Menestratus slays by feeding himself to it in armor covered in fish-hooks, or the lamias of Libya, who entice young men into their striking-range by wiggling their tails, shaped like beautiful women, at them. The texts are arranged in such a way as to allow readers to witness the continuity of and evolution in dragon stories between the Classical and Christian worlds, and to understand the genesis of saintly dragon-slaying stories of the sort now characteristically associated with St George, whose earliest dragon-fight concludes the volume. All texts, a considerable number of which have not previously been available in English, are offered in new translations and accompanied by lucid commentaries that place the source-passages into their mythical, folkloric, literary, and cultural contexts. A sampling of the ancient iconography of dragons and an appendix on dragon slaying myths from the ancient Near East and India, particularly those with a bearing upon the Greco-Roman material, are also included. This volume promises to be the most authoritative sourcebook on this perennially fascinating and influential body of ancient myth.

Book excerpt: Let sleeping dogs lie… Don’t stir up the past. Especially when that past is an ancient, feral vampire sleeping at the bottom of an aged cobblestone well, one who is famished for blood, determined to claim you, and haunted by mystical shadows…remnants from the past. Long ago, in a Romanian castle, the last females of a dying race called him Nanaşule. Godfather. One who wields the powers of the gods, yet behaves as Father, one who is both respected and beloved…at least before the Blood Curse. One who hails from a long line of powerful mages who served the monarchy faithfully. But something is different about Fabian Antonescu. He is haunted by visions of a golden hawk and a copper-eyed raven—cryptic vials of blood—and he will do anything to remain one step ahead of his memories. For the secrets shrouded in the fog could change everything. Gwendolyn Hamilton, as strong as she is, has already survived the unthinkable. She didn’t ask to be thrust into a predatory world of vampires, warriors, and ancient mages. She didn’t ask to be taken by Fabian. Yet one touch of a stone, one electrical current, one fateful moment when a vampire’s eyes met hers were more than enough to set off an explosion — and cause a thunderous BLOOD ECHO. If she hopes to survive, she must answer back… To the call of the wild ~ to a savage vampire. To the demands of antiquity in a modern world. To the threat and promise of a looming Blood Moon ~ and the destiny that awaits her.

Book excerpt: Newbery Honor Book New York Times Bestseller This impassioned, uplifting, and virtuosic tour de force from a treasured storyteller follows three children, in three different times and places, whose lives mysteriously intersect. Lost and alone in a forbidden forest, Otto meets three mysterious sisters and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. All the children face daunting challenges: rescuing a father, protecting a brother, holding a family together. And ultimately, pulled by the invisible thread of destiny, their suspenseful solo stories converge in an orchestral crescendo. Richly imagined and masterfully crafted, Echo pushes the boundaries of genre, form, and storytelling innovation to create a wholly original novel that will resound in your heart long after the last note has been struck.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book treats the poetics of biblical allusion in the lyric poetry of William Butler Yeats, and the ways in which the King James Bible became for Yeats a model for poetry as a communal voice shaping a culture." "The introduction analyzes the critical history of what Eleanor Cook has termed the "poetics of allusion," emphasizing the work of the Italian rhetorician Gian Biago Conte and the American critic and poet John Hollander. The major topics considered here are allusions as the intersections of texts, as figures of speech, and as structural signifiers; the centrality of the reader in the study of allusion; the quality of allusions, their placement and varying degrees of clarity; and the centrality of the study of allusion to cultural criticism." "The first chapter is concerned with the development of the Bible as a model for secular poetry from the late eighteenth century to Yeats, surveying Bishop Lowth, Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Shelley, and Matthew Arnold, as well as Yeats's references in his prose works to the Bible as a model for art and the artist, and his desire to restore the Bible as sacred text, yet write his own Bible." "Chapters 2 through 5 take up in detail the poetics of biblical allusion and echo in the poems. Chapter 2 treats the poetry of the nineties: here Yeats usually engages the Bible as an antagonist, subverting it for the sake of a Celtic consciousness, denying its exclusive claim to spiritual truth. But many biblical echoes show Yeats's dependence upon the Bible as a guide to poetic language. Chapter 3 concerns the poetry from In the Seven Worlds to The Wild Swans at Coole. Yeats looks on Scripture with an ironic eye, often replacing it with what he calls "haughtier texts," the parables, prayers, visions, and private revelations that mirror biblical models and make biblical texts into warrants for his own theory of rebirth. Chapter 4 is a close reading of biblical intertextuality in seven poems: "The Second Coming," "Sailing to Byzantium," "Meditations in Time of Civil War," "Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen," "Prayer for My Son," "Dialogue of Self and Soul," and "Vacillation." In these major poems Yeats displays his antitheticality, as Hazard Adams calls it, putting into dramatic tension biblical texts and his own heterodox ideas about birth, death, and resurrection. Chapter 5 examines the poetry after "Vacillation," where Yeats gives biblical texts (often text used before) a new sensual gloss, but also admits the limits of a "high talk" derived from scriptural language." "Chapter 6 places Yeats in the broad context of biblical intertextuality, working backward from modernism to Romanticism. First, the study contrasts Yeats with two of his contemporaries, D. H. Lawrence and T. S. Eliot, for whom the Bible always asserts its religious authority, in the Victorian tradition of Arnold, Clough, Browning, and Tennyson. The study concludes by comparing Yeats to Wordsworth and Shelley. Although Yeats is deeply indebted to them, his attitude is distinct from theirs: even when rejecting the Bible, Wordsworth. and Shelley accept a dogmatic view of it, while Yeats escapes dogmatism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The first white intruders in the area north of the Great Divide to the Murray River drained by the Goulburn, Loddon and Wimmera rivers were cattle and sheep ‘overlanders’ from the Sydney-side searching for green pastures in drought-affected NSW and a route to South Australia. Echo 76: THE NORTHERN CONQUEST – Drover’s accounts of overlanding sets the scene for the later Echo 83: REVIEWING THE FAITHFULL MASSACRE, WANGARATTA AND SCOURING THE OVENS. With a military escort, the wife of the Governor of VD Land Lady Jane Franklin wrote travel diaries and letters of her visit to Melbourne and ‘tour’ of Australia Felix in 1839. Sounding 5 introduces the journals of Protector Dredge camping with the Goulburn clans and is followed by Echo 79: THE HUTTON & MUNRO AFFAIRS, being the invasion of Djadja Wurrung country as revealed in Chief Protector Robinson’s journal for January 1840. This leads into Parker’s Mount Franklin Protectorate Station combined with shire history snippets of Maryborough, Avoca and Boort before a section on the Djadja Wurrung who survived colonization. Another group of shire histories cover Kyabram, Shepparton, Murchison, Benalla, Tallangatta, Benambra and Bendigo areas before Ian D Clark’s depiction of the box-ironbark forests and pre-1840s Aboriginal land tenure in north-central Victoria. Included here is an ecological section on ‘fire-stick farming’ replaced by agri-business. The fate of the Goulburn tribe, the Taungurong clans, and pioneer Carter’s early days on the Wimmera lead to echo 87: ORIENTING THE WERGAIA WIMMERA-MALLEE CLANS and then to EBENEZER – archaeology of an Aboriginal Mission Station. Sounding 5 closes with an echo on the bush-life experiences of battler William Kyle and for contrast reveals the dispossession role played by wealthy land speculators in echo 90: BEN BOYD – Royal Yacht Squadron Slaver.

Here, readers will discover the work of a mature poet, as he weaves lyrical imagery together with astonishing passion, creating verses that tell of deep beauty, philosophy, spirituality, and love. With emotive stanzas that stir the senses, grip the emotions, and move the soul. Inspired from experiences, events, memorable books, movies, places, and such, each poem evokes strong feelings—sometimes of bliss, of sorrow, or of love. Some written in rhyme while others in free-verse, these short yet emotive poems also touch on topics like magic, truth, prejudice, nature, passion, and more. Furthermore, also included are meaningful photographs that heighten the readers’ feelings, taking them on a journey of inspiration from one page to the next. In his poem “Die With Me,” the poet talks of things that matter the most: “Let us learn how to die / So we can learn how to live / Drink every drop / Savor every ray of sunshine / Inhale the fragrances all around us / Be the beauty”. In “Worth Living For,” the poet talks of beauty, nature, and joy: “What makes life worth living for you? / I live for beauty / To behold a field of wildflowers / On a mountaintop”.

So where is the truth in the ones Deagon and Jenabel seek? When Deagon Maddock inherits a crumbling fortress, he discovers treasure alluding to a past he had heard as a myth so many times. Dragons, not like the ones he knows, but ones who were once protectors of the land. Did they really exist? A ghost, a crystal ball, and a book with an attitude, seem to all be telling him it is so. And when he sees the girl in the crystal ball, he is honestly more interested in her. Jenabel Sander’s brothers would worry for her, even think she was crazy, if she told them about the dragon in her dreams, or the evil man. Either one would give her brothers cause to question her sanity. She questioned her sanity. Red dragons, breathing fire, were myths made to entertain, not believe in. So how did she explain the need to find him? Anhanan can’t believe the dragon shape shifters have been wiped from the land. Nothing is left of his people but stories. It is Jenabel who keeps his mind strong and focused in the aftermath of his return and he knows there must be a battle to end the reign of the one who destroyed them. And when Jenabel is kidnapped, it is not he who fights for vengeance.
