A Hugo Award-winning Novel! “Vinge is one of the best visionary writers of SF today.”-David Brin Thousands of years in the future, humanity is no longer alone in a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures, and technology, can function. Nobody knows what strange force partitioned space into these "regions of thought," but when the warring Straumli realm use an ancient Transcendent artifact as a weapon, they unwittingly unleash an awesome power that destroys thousands of worlds and enslaves all natural and artificial intelligence. Fleeing this galactic threat, Ravna crash lands on a strange world with a ship-hold full of cryogenically frozen children, the only survivors from a destroyed space-lab. They are taken captive by the Tines, an alien race with a harsh medieval culture, and used as pawns in a ruthless power struggle. Book Synopsis Aviation Policy Framework by : Great Britain: Department for Transport
Download or read book Aviation Policy Framework written by Great Britain: Department for Transport and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2012, the Government consulted on its strategy for aviation, the draft Aviation Policy Framework. This final Aviation Policy Framework will fully replace the 2003 Air Transport White Paper (Cm.6046, ISBN 9780101604628) on aviation, alongside Government decisions following the recommendations of the Independent Airports Commission, established September 2012. The Aviation Policy Framework is underpinned by two core principles: (i) Collaboration: achieved by working together with industry, regulators, experts, local communities to identify workable solutions; (ii) Transparency: decision making based on clear, independent information and processes. The Framework Policy covers the following areas: (1) Supporting growth and benefits of aviation; (2) Managing aviation's environmental impacts, such as climate change and noise pollution; (3) The role of the Airports Commission; (4) Other aviation objectives, including: protecting passenger' rights; competition and regulation policy; airspace; safety; security and planning.

Download or read book Runway Safety written by Iain McCreary and published by . This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the single best analysis of runway safety, FOD, and on-runway strikes presently available. It is data driven, values neutral, and draws together information from airlines, airports, regulators, and service/technology. It, for the first time, knits together an industry-wide perspective that allows like-for-like comparison of runway safety incidents, including incursions and excursions.Chapters detail the characteristics and statistics behind strike damage; direct and indirect costs; expected costs for the leading airlines and airports; a step-by-step airport investment case; an airline investment case; and details on the minimum required performance standards for scanning systems. The results are compelling and, for many readers, surprising. Long held assumptions about what is and is not important, about what works to reduce risks and what does not, are turned upside down. Structured for easy reading, and quickly digestible with tools to support your own analyses, the report is quickly becoming 'required reading' in the aviation community. Whether read by a regulator, airport operator, airline, service provider, or technology vendors, this report has the answers to your questions about FOD, bird strikes, and automated runway scanning.
Download or read book Transportation Conformity written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation conformity is required under the Clean Air Act (CAA) Section 176(c) to ensure that Federally-supported transportation activities are consistent with (“conform to”) the purpose of a State Implementation Plan (SIP). Transportation conformity establishes the framework for improving air quality to protect public health and the environment. Conformity to the purpose of the SIP means Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding and approvals are given to highway and transit activities that will not cause new air quality violations, worsen existing air quality violations, or delay timely attainment of the relevant air quality standard, or any interim milestone. This Guide was prepared to help State and local officials understand transportation conformity and how conformity requirements relate to transportation investments in their communities. Specifically, the implications of conformity on metropolitan transportation plans, transportation improvement programs (TIPs), and transportation projects are discussed. The Guide provides overview information on the major elements of the conformity process and provides answers to basic questions. Several exhibits are included in the Guide to illustrate key elements of the conformity process. Appendices are also included that discuss the health effects of pollutants, options to reduce on-road mobile source emissions, and resource agency contacts.
