Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution of India, have always been distorted by the people involved in the Left and minority alliance, and the Congress. Due to their personal interests, they always presented Babasaheb as a leader of the downtrodden and Dalits. They tried to portray him as if he nowhere contributed to the upliftment and development of the country. Today these separatists want to spread unrest in the country on the pretext of a Dalit-Muslim alliance. Realising these things, Dr. Ambedkar talked about the complete transfer of the Hindu and Muslim populations in the event of the partition of the country in 1940. He gave Constitution to the country which is still protecting the integrity and unity of the country. He opposed Article 370 in the Constitution, but it was added because of Nehru's love for particular community. As a research student of Economics, he gave the idea of the Reserve Bank of India and the Finance Commission. As the Law Minister of the country, he prepare Hindu Code Bill, to paved the way for women’s empowerment and the right of women to inherit ancestral property. This book is an attempt to bring to light the nationalist thoughts of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and protray his contribution to the development of the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India's constitution, and M.K. Gandhi, the Indian nationalist, two figures whose thought and legacies have most strongly shaped the contours of Indian democracy, are typically considered antagonists who held irreconcilable views on empire, politics, and society. As such, they are rarely studied together. This book reassesses their complex relationship, focusing on their shared commitment to equality and justice, which for them was inseparable from anticolonial struggles for sovereignty. Both men inherited the concept of equality from Western humanism, but their ideas mark a radical turn in humanist conceptions of politics. This study recovers the philosophical foundations of their thought in Indian and Western traditions, religious and secular alike. Attending to moments of difficulty in their conceptions of justice and their languages of nonviolence, it probes the nature of risk that radical democracy's desire for inclusion opens within modern political thought. In excavating Ambedkar and Gandhi's intellectual kinship, Radical Equality allows them to shed light on each other, even as it places them within a global constellation of moral and political visions. The story of their struggle against inequality, violence, and empire thus transcends national boundaries and unfolds within a universal history of citizenship and dissent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a new awakening in India that is challenging the ongoing westernization of the discourse about India. The Battle for Sanskrit seeks to alert traditional scholars of Sanskrit and sanskriti - Indian civilization - concerning an important school of thought that has its base in the US and that has started to dominate the discourse on the cultural, social and political aspects of India. This academic field is called Indology or Sanskrit studies. From their analysis of Sanskrit texts, the scholars of this field are intervening in modern Indian society with the explicitly stated purpose of removing 'poisons' allegedly built into these texts. They hold that many Sanskrit texts are socially oppressive and serve as political weapons in the hands of the ruling elite; that the sacred aspects need to be refuted; and that Sanskrit has long been dead. The traditional Indian experts would outright reject or at least question these positions. The start of Rajiv Malhotra's feisty exploration of where the new thrust in Western Indology goes wrong, and his defence of what he considers the traditional, Indian approach, began with a project related to the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka, one of the most sacred institutions for Hindus. There was, as he saw it, a serious risk of distortion of the teachings of the peetham, and of sanatana dharma more broadly. Whichever side of the fence one may be on, The Battle for Sanskrit offers a spirited debate marshalling new insights and research. It is a valuable addition to an important subject, and in a larger context, on two ways of looking. Is each view exclusive of the other, or can there be a bridge between them? Readers can judge for themselves.

Book excerpt: Contemporary Relevance of Ambedkar's Thoughts attempts a fresh look at the various challenges confronting India today from the point of view of B.R. Ambedkar (1891-1956). Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politican, and social reformer. This book brings together the critical reflections of his critiques and admirers on his philosophical and ideological roots, his conception of new social order, just society and democracy, his idea of history writing, women's emancipation, separate settlements, and nationalism. It also throws light on the constitutional rights of the Dalit and Adivasi communities in the context of increasing privatization and globalization, and on the growing leadership crisis among these communities in changing economic and political contexts. Book excerpt: “What the Communist Manifesto is to the capitalist world, Annihilation of Caste is to India.” —Anand Teltumbde, author of The Persistence of Caste The classic work of Indian Dalit politics, reframed with an extensive introduction by Arundathi Roy B.R. Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste is one of the most important, yet neglected, works of political writing from India. Written in 1936, it is an audacious denunciation of Hinduism and its caste system. Ambedkar – a figure like W.E.B. Du Bois – offers a scholarly critique of Hindu scriptures, scriptures that sanction a rigidly hierarchical and iniquitous social system. The world’s best-known Hindu, Mahatma Gandhi, responded publicly to the provocation. The hatchet was never buried. Arundhati Roy introduces this extensively annotated edition of Annihilation of Caste in “The Doctor and the Saint,” examining the persistence of caste in modern India, and how the conflict between Ambedkar and Gandhi continues to resonate. Roy takes us to the beginning of Gandhi’s political career in South Africa, where his views on race, caste and imperialism were shaped. She tracks Ambedkar’s emergence as a major political figure in the national movement, and shows how his scholarship and intelligence illuminated a political struggle beset by sectarianism and obscurantism. Roy breathes new life into Ambedkar’s anti-caste utopia, and says that without a Dalit revolution, India will continue to be hobbled by systemic inequality.

Book excerpt: Politics, Ideology and Nationalism: Jinnah, Savarkar and Ambedkar versus Gandhi is a new argument based on familiar historical evidences. It discusses three leadersSavarkar, Ambedkar and Jinnahin their opposition to Gandhiboth in terms of ideology as well as social and political discourse. Although there are biographical works and other notable publications on them, none of these attempt to engage in contrasting their ideology and practices on a common platform. This book examines Gandhi and SavarkarAmbedkarJinnahs commonality of opposition and their differing ideas of modernity. All three of them saw Gandhi as the biggest hurdle to the projects that they conceived. The book explores how these differences went beyond politics and shaped the contours of Indian politics during the 1930s and 1940s, and continue to affect it even today.
