Providing analytical discussion of each of Parker's works, this study combines music-theoretical, historical, and philosophical perspectives. A variety of analytical techniques are brought to bear on Parker's compositions, including application of a revised Schenkerian approach to the music that was developed through the author's prior publications. After a review of Parker's life emphasizing his musical training and involvement in composition, the book proceeds by considering the types of Parker pieces as categorized by overall form and harmony and the amount of preplanned music they contain. The historical circumstances of each piece are reviewed, and, in some cases, sources of the ideas of the most important tunes are explored. The introduction includes a discussion of the ontology of a jazz composition. The view is advanced that the Western concept of a music composition needs to be expanded to embrace practices typical of jazz composition and forming a significant part of Parker's work. While focusing on Parker's more conventional tunes, the book also considers his large-scale melodic formulas. Two formulas in particular are arguably compositional, since they are repeated in subsequent performances of the same piece. As part of the research for this book, all of Parker's copyright submissions to the Library of Congress were examined and photographed. Book excerpt: In 1861, a half-century before Arnold Schoenberg's break with tonality, a young composer associated with Liszt saw a threshold to musical modernism as lodged in the "suspension of the main key." As the unified tonal perspective of earlier music yielded increasingly to dualistic key structures often laden with chromaticism, the language of music was transformed. In The Second Practice of Nineteenth-Century Tonality, nine prominent theorists and historians explore aspects of this musical evolution, from Schubert to the end of the nineteenth century. Many works discussed are masterpieces of the performance repertory, ranging from Chopin's piano pieces and Wagner's music dramas to the symphonies of Bruckner. The integration of analytical and historical approaches in the essays seeks to avoid narrow specialization as well as the polemic stance of some recent studies. More than 500 persons, including 423 regis tered participants, attended the Conference. Financial support was generously provided by the organizations listed under Acknowledg ments. The Conference was planned and hosted by a Local Committee in response to a request from Professor Dennis Carr, Secretary of IPGSA, in 1976, that the Tenth Conference be held on this campus in 1979. To achieve comprehensive, systematic coverage of the subject and yet provide maximum opportunity for individual contributions by partici pants, reports were presented under ten topics, each with sessions of oral reports and poster demonstrations. Chairmen appointed by the Local Committee organized the material to be presented and arranged for a series of integrated, invited reports on each topic. They presided and led discussions at the sessions, and they also greatly assisted in the editing of the invited reports which are presented in full in these Pro ceedings. Unfortunately it was economically impractical to publish all reports, but the 244 submitted abstracts have been printed and dis tributed to participants.
