Book excerpt: Haywood Robinson was just seventeen when she was sent to a behavioral modification program in Montana-a horrible and painful experience. This raw and emotional memoir chronicles Haywood's struggles with mental illness and her lack of a diagnosis until her thirties. It fearlessly tells of her experiences with toxic relationships, abortion, love addiction, eating disorders, and attempted suicides, and outlines her difficult climb back out of the darkness toward recovery. She wants readers to truly understand the agony of mental illness and the many difficulties people with mental illness go through every day of their lives. She hopes parents who read this book will consider dealing compassionately with their child's mental illness rather than resorting to a program that uses attack therapy and brainwashing...because those experiences usually do far more harm than good. Lastly, she wants people like herself to know they are not alone. That their feelings are valid and they are important.

Book excerpt: A few fabulous trips. Eight crazy people. Tons of mad drama. “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” For the eight members of the Destination: Anticipation Travel Club (DAT Club) — this popular motto doesn’t exactly ring true. The group is sorely reminded that dirt is dirt is dirt, no matter where it happens and eventually folks are going to find out about it, no matter how hard they try to cover up their individual misdeeds. Identical twins Madetra Howard, a frustrated, inner-city hospital doctor and Elantra Evans, a stripper/web-porn operator, start a travel club and along for the ride are: Madetra’s uncaring husband who secretly loves his sister-in-law and is hell-bent on distancing himself from his humble beginnings, a self-absorbed local TV anchorman who develops a thing for every woman he meets, a mysterious psychiatrist who is nuttier than his patients, a female TV news producer whose affair with a fellow travel club member leaves her pregnant and reeling, a reporter whose Sex & The Single Sistah column reveals a little too much about the city’s elite and a petty drug dealer/minor league baseball player who will do anything or anyone to get out of the cut and into the major leagues. For DAT Club, all hell breaks loose following a trip to Las Vegas. With secrets as deep and twisted as the road is long — everyone is in peril when a blackmailer and killer among them makes their presence known. Each of them must learn for themselves there are consequences to be paid for their actions — and when the men start dying off — the women start questioning their allegiances, their safety and their sanity. To put it simply, these folks are TRIPPIN’. So sit back, fasten your seatbelt and enjoy this explosive, drama-filled literary ride.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyric poetry has long been regarded as the intensely private, emotional expression of individuals, powerful precisely because it draws readers into personal worlds. But who, exactly, is the "I" in a lyric poem, and how is it created? In Lyric Poetry, Mutlu Blasing argues that the individual in a lyric is only a virtual entity and that lyric poetry takes its power from the public, emotional power of language itself. In the first major new theory of the lyric to be put forward in decades, Blasing proposes that lyric poetry is a public discourse deeply rooted in the mother tongue. She looks to poetic, linguistic, and psychoanalytic theory to help unravel the intricate historical processes that generate speaking subjects, and concludes that lyric forms convey both personal and communal emotional histories in language. Focusing on the work of such diverse twentieth-century American poets as T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, and Anne Sexton, Blasing demonstrates the ways that the lyric "I" speaks, from first to last, as a creation of poetic language.

In the world of sadomasochism, pressure points have many other interesting applications. They can be used to inflict pain ranging from mild discomfort to blinding agony - giving us that reasured "oh, just kill me and get it over with" reaction. At the other end of the spectrum, pressure points can be used for intense sensual play and can even help create orgasms without direct genital stimulation.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES and LOS ANGELES TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant . . . riveting, scary, cogent, and cleverly argued.”—Beth Macy, author of Dopesick, as heard on Fresh Air This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting . . . The increased numbers, variety, and potency is staggering. The smartphone is the modern-day hypodermic needle, delivering digital dopamine 24/7 for a wired generation. As such we’ve all become vulnerable to compulsive overconsumption. In Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explores the exciting new scientific discoveries that explain why the relentless pursuit of pleasure leads to pain . . . and what to do about it. Condensing complex neuroscience into easy-to-understand metaphors, Lembke illustrates how finding contentment and connectedness means keeping dopamine in check. The lived experiences of her patients are the gripping fabric of her narrative. Their riveting stories of suffering and redemption give us all hope for managing our consumption and transforming our lives. In essence, Dopamine Nation shows that the secret to finding balance is combining the science of desire with the wisdom of recovery.

Around the Way Girls 5, like its predecessors, is a fast-paced look at the lives of some street-smart women who think they know it all, but are about to get the lessons of their lives. In Tysha’s “Keepin’ It in the Family,” Diamond, Essence, and Chanel are three motherless high-priced hookers and their father, Dallas Collins, is their pimp. At what point will his daughters finally get the courage to band together and break loose from being Daddy’s little girls? In Mark Anthony’s “So Seductive,” best friends Cinnamon and Simone use their exotic looks and voluptuous bodies to lure men into numerous one night stands. However, these one night stands don’t end up in passionate sex; instead, with the help of two henchmen, they end up in violent robberies. In Erick S. Gray’s “Pound Cake,” we bring you to Coney Island, where four friends deal with the daily life of growing up in one of deadliest parts of the borough. Pound Cake, a beautiful, fiery nineteen-year-old is the ring leader of the pack. Her homegirls are her family, and people in the streets know not to mess with Pound Cake or her family. Soon they’re both taking risks that not only play fast and loose with the law, but with the biggest prize of all: their hearts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sublime Failures, David Martyn argues that a return to Kant's latent "Sadianism" helps to confront the unresolved question of agency -- or how to formulate an ethic after the deconstruction of the subject -- in cultural studies theory. Acknowledging allegations of Kant's "empty formalism" and even of his proximity to a certain Sadianism, Martyn argues that Kant's ethics are valid not despite but because of their similarity to those of Sade. In close readings that address the historical and material conditions of the composition of their work, Martyn argues that the efforts of Kant and Sade to totalize systems -- of ethics, philosophy, pleasures, crimes -- must fail, but that the failure leads to important insights about ethics. The book offers philosophical and rhetorical analyses of the two authors' major works, and focuses on two related thematic fields: the economy of the gift and the materiality of writing. Stories of giving and thievery in Sade are read in tandem with Kant's elaborations about what is and is not "given" to us in the phenomenal world, and Kant's digressions on the challenges of writing a critique of pure reason are correlated with Sade's depictions of the crime of writing. A reinterpretation of the Kantian sublime then allows for an alignment of these two paradigms by showing how writing and the "gift" invalidate the teleological premises of traditional ethics. The book concludes with a critique of Lacan's essay, "Kant with Sade, " which provides an occasion to assess questions of gender, "race, " and cultural alterity.

Book excerpt: The second book in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet, which began with the bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning The Giver. Left orphaned and physically flawed in a civilization that shuns and discards the weak, Kira faces a frighteningly uncertain future. Her neighbors are hostile, and no one but a small boy offers to help. When she is summoned to judgment by The Council of Guardians, Kira prepares to fight for her life. But the Council, to her surprise, has plans for her. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, the young girl faces new responsibilities and a set of mysteries deep within the only world she has ever known. On her quest for truth, Kira discovers things that will change her life and world forever. A compelling examination of a future society, Gathering Blue challenges readers to think about community, creativity, and the values that they have learned to accept. Once again Lois Lowry brings readers on a provocative journey that inspires contemplation long after the last page is turned. “This extraordinary novel is remarkable for its fully realized characters, gripping plot, and Lowry’s singular vision of a future.” —VOYA The Giver has become one of the most influential novels of our time. Don't miss the powerful companion novels in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.
