Book excerpt: I had no specific topic in my mind when I started writing this book. Each time the 'hat' (my brain) initiated its magic, it brought out something new, just like a magician's hat. This book is a collection of random stories which bear no connection with each other. Some are a creation of my weird imagination while others are random thoughts and precious memories. It also comprises some stories from my life. It has something for everyone-from adventure to thriller to horror to everyday life situations- sometimes involving confused thoughts, motivational articles and essays, and some of my childhood stories from the 80s. The 'Ensemble' is my first attempt at creating an anthology and compiling different stories in a single book. It is an attempt to cook a perfect magic potion through various stories by mixing different emotional ingredients. Just say abracadabra and teleport into a world full of stories. See you on the other side!

A mix of emotions ranging from happiness and excitement of being free to confusion and maybe even fear of unwelcome society's wrath and people not accepting him. He might also feel lost because the world would've changed so much by the time he comes out of prison. This could all happen to anyone but not John Sweets Russo. He's a tough nut to crack, and thirty-four years in prison couldn't break his spirit. Though he came out of the prison burdened with guilt, he was ready to face the world head-on. He will not let his guilt bend him down and let the world break his spirit. He is not asking for a second chance from anyone. He is making a come-back. John Sweets Russo was once the left-hand man of William Vallery, the head of the notorious Vallery gang of Toronto and now aspires to be a singer. He is looking for a chance to make the most of his life that is left, considering he is seventy-five now. As he got out of prison and joined a world he didn't recognize anymore, all he wanted to do was to sing. ‘The Incredible Mr Sweets’ is the coming of age story that chronicles an ex-con’s journey to becoming a singing star. ‘The Incredible Mr Sweets’ also highlights the identity crisis faced by immigrant’s children born in Canada. Very few people get a second chance in life like Jasmeet John Sweets Russo. Even after making some horrible decisions in life, he gets a second chance. Not many are as lucky as he is. Make the most of what you have.

Book excerpt: Based on a course developed by the author, Introduction to High Performance Scientific Computing introduces methods for adding parallelism to numerical methods for solving differential equations. It contains exercises and programming projects that facilitate learning as well as examples and discussions based on the C programming language, with additional comments for those already familiar with C++. The text provides an overview of concepts and algorithmic techniques for modern scientific computing and is divided into six self-contained parts that can be assembled in any order to create an introductory course using available computer hardware. Part I introduces the C programming language for those not already familiar with programming in a compiled language. Part II describes parallelism on shared memory architectures using OpenMP. Part III details parallelism on computer clusters using MPI for coordinating a computation. Part IV demonstrates the use of graphical programming units (GPUs) to solve problems using the CUDA language for NVIDIA graphics cards. Part V addresses programming on GPUs for non-NVIDIA graphics cards using the OpenCL framework. Finally, Part VI contains a brief discussion of numerical methods and applications, giving the reader an opportunity to test the methods on typical computing problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic and molecular studies have recently come to dominate botanical research at the expense of more traditional morphological approaches. This broad introduction to modern flower systematics demonstrates the great potential that floral morphology has to complement molecular data in phylogenetic and evolutionary investigations. Contributions from experts in floral morphology and evolution take the reader through examples of how flowers have diversified in a large variety of lineages of extant and fossil flowering plants. They explore angiosperm origins and the early evolution of flowers and analyse the significance of morphological characters for phylogenetic reconstructions on the tree of life. The importance of integrating morphology into modern botanical research is highlighted through case studies exploring specific plant groups where morphological investigations are having a major impact. Examples include the clarification of phylogenetic relationships and understanding the significance and evolution of specific floral characters, such as pollination mechanisms and stamen and carpel numbers.

This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Statistical Analysis of Multivariate Failure Time Data: A Marginal Modeling Approach provides an innovative look at methods for the analysis of correlated failure times. The focus is on the use of marginal single and marginal double failure hazard rate estimators for the extraction of regression information. For example, in a context of randomized trial or cohort studies, the results go beyond that obtained by analyzing each failure time outcome in a univariate fashion. The book is addressed to researchers, practitioners, and graduate students, and can be used as a reference or as a graduate course text. Much of the literature on the analysis of censored correlated failure time data uses frailty or copula models to allow for residual dependencies among failure times, given covariates. In contrast, this book provides a detailed account of recently developed methods for the simultaneous estimation of marginal single and dual outcome hazard rate regression parameters, with emphasis on multiplicative (Cox) models. Illustrations are provided of the utility of these methods using Women’s Health Initiative randomized controlled trial data of menopausal hormones and of a low-fat dietary pattern intervention. As byproducts, these methods provide flexible semiparametric estimators of pairwise bivariate survivor functions at specified covariate histories, as well as semiparametric estimators of cross ratio and concordance functions given covariates. The presentation also describes how these innovative methods may extend to handle issues of dependent censorship, missing and mismeasured covariates, and joint modeling of failure times and covariates, setting the stage for additional theoretical and applied developments. This book extends and continues the style of the classic Statistical Analysis of Failure Time Data by Kalbfleisch and Prentice. Ross L. Prentice is Professor of Biostatistics at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He is the recipient of COPSS Presidents and Fisher awards, the AACR Epidemiology/Prevention and Team Science awards, and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine. Shanshan Zhao is a Principal Investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
