Book excerpt: Dernier à l'affirmer en 1757, Bougainville écrit: "Les Canadiens [...] leur accent est aussi bon qu'à Paris". Il confirme ainsi tous les témoignages analogues formulés par les Français et les étrangers qui ont séjourné dans la Nouvelle-France entre 1608 et 1760: il y a alors pleine communauté d'accent entre Québec et Paris. Mais en 1841, coup de théâtre: Thomas Maguire fait état dans un ouvrage publié à Québec de différences très sensibles de prononciation entre Québec et Paris. S'ensuit un sérieux choc culturel pour la petite élite du Canada français. Celle-ci découvre alors que Paris, à l'insu des Canadiens, a changé d'accent et qu'il lui faut, pour garder son rang dans "le monde francophone nouveau" issu de la Révolution de 1789, se mettre à la page. D'abord en prenant une nette conscience des changements survenus à Paris; puis en développant un mouvement pour modifier en conséquence la prononciation des Canadiens. Mouvement qui aura ses assises dans les collèges classiques, les écoles normales et les écoles de diction et qui prendra appui sur le théâtre, la radio et la télévision pour diffuser sur une échelle de plus en plus large le nouveau modèle de prononciation et le rendre ainsi graduellement acceptable à tous les Québécois. Joueront un rôle majeur dans cette opération des pédagogues de premier plan, à Québec d'abord, puis à Montréal. Pour eux, le défi est de taille, qui a pour objet de faire changer d'accent à une population située à mille lieues du modèle à imiter, et dont l'élite est très proche du peuple. Le présent essai fait état de ces difficultés, en même temps qu'il présente les propositions de changement des pédagogues ; propositions qui, entre 1841 et 1960, ont eu pour effet de modifier considérablement la prononciation des Québécois en la faisant glisser lentement de l'accent originel et de la forme traditionnelle des mots vers des formes et une prononciation modernisées, calquées sur les formes officielles des grands dictionnaires de la langue et sur la prononciation bourgeoise qui, depuis la Révolution de 1789, s'est imposée dans la haute société de Paris et, de là, dans toutes les élites francophones de France et d'Europe.

Book excerpt: Si certaines études ont mis en lumière les principales différences phonétiques entre le français du Québec (FQ) et le français de France (FF), peu d'entre elles ont été consacrées à l'importance perceptive de ces différences dans la reconnaissance des accents québécois et français. On réfère à ces différences dont la perception permet de reconnaître l 'origine dialectale du locuteur par le terme de marqueurs dialectaux. La présente étude vise à déterminer l'importance perceptive de cinq phénomènes phonétiques, soit l'affrication de /t/ et de /d/, le relâchement de /i/, /y/ et /u/, la postériorisation de /a/, la fermeture de /E/ et l'antériorisation de /ã/, dans l'identification de l'accent québécois. Deux corpus de phrases de type ±Le X1 est X2 ¿ ont été produits en FQ et en FF, chaque phénomène du FQ pouvant apparaître dans les deux cibles (X1 et X2). Ces cibles (sous forme de mot dans le 1er corpus et de logatome dans le 2e) ont été manipulées pour obtenir un continuum perceptif allant de la réalisation française à la réalisation québécoise. Les participants (41 sujets natifs du français québécois) ont eu pour tâche d'identifier l'origine géographique des locuteurs. Les résultats ont permis de relier les phénomènes phonétiques étudiés à la perception de la variation dialectale et d 'établir une hiérarchie de ces marqueurs dialectaux sur la base de la pertinence perceptive que leur accordent les participants, en tenant compte de leur position dans la phrase et de la présence d'autres marqueurs. Le relâchement et l'affrication se sont particulièrenlent démarqués quant à leur poids perceptif.
