Book excerpt: Since Tudor times the ships of the Royal Navy have dropped anchor in Dorset's waters. The English fleet first attacked the Spanish Armada off Portland. Four captains at Trafalgar were Dorset-born. Much of the D-Day fleet set sail from Dorset. Until recently, Portland was a major naval and helicopter base, whilst Poole remains a home of the Royal Marines and Special Boat Squadron.

Book excerpt: In January 1795 a fleet of some 200 Royal Navy and merchant vessels left Spithead bound for the West Indies under the command of Rear Admiral Hugh Clobbery Christian. They were sent to challenge French supremacy in the West Indies but two days out from Spithead a huge storm raged and the ships were ordered to make for the safety of Torbay. Many didn't make it. Six were forced onto the beach at Chesil. Another eight heavily crowded sailing ships smashed onto the shore elsewhere in Dorset. Others were wrecked along the South Coast. At Chesil alone, for two miles, bodies of men and animals littered the beach. The survivors were ignored as the locals plundered the wrecks for salvage. Hundreds of men died and British hopes in the Caribbean were dashed for a year and a half. Expertly written, this is the story of the disaster and its aftermath.

Book excerpt: "Author Andrew Norman explores the events leading up to the [sinking of the HMS Hood] and the legacy it left in its wake. His research includes reports from both the Royal Naval Museum and German naval records as well as a unique interview with the only living survivor ... of the Hood disaster, Ted Briggs. Virtually all of the author's material is taken from original sources and many of the photographs he includes to illustrate the text have never before been published. In HMS Hood : pride of the Royal Navy, he poses his own theory for the ship's sinking -- one that has until this point not yet been proposed"--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the Naval Staff History originally issued by the Admiralty in 1957 as a confidential book for use within the Royal Navy. It has since been declassified and is published here for the first time, along with an extended preface. This volume describes the dangerous convoy operations in the Mediterranean which were necessary to relieve the garrison and people of Malta, covering the period from the beginning of 1941 until the end of 1942. These convoys had to be fought through against determined attack by German and Italian surface, submarine and, particularly, air forces. Although casualties were proportionately higher than in Atlantic convoys, Malta was successfully re-supplied and remained a considerable impediment to enemy’s attempts to supply their armies in North Africa. These operations reveal the dedication, courage and professionalism of the sailors (of both naval and merchant services) as well as the airmen who supported them. A new preface sets the scene for the Staff History. The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys will be of great interest for students interested in the Mediterranean Convoys, Second World War and naval and military history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the first helicopter in the world designed from the outset to be deployed at sea, in Destroyers and Frigates. It is primarily based on the words of those who operated it. Designed from the outset to cope with the restricted space of a warship both for stowage and flight operations it proved an immediate success. Its original role was to act as a weapon carrier to launch torpedoes and depth charges on submarine contacts out of range of the parent ships weapons range. Soon, it also took on a second primary role of air to surface attack using wire guided missiles. The flexibility of the machine was such that it was able to conduct a plethora of secondary roles from visual search to collecting the all-important ships mail. Wherever the Royal Navy was deployed on operations a Wasp was there. The book has accounts of operations around the world particularly during the Cold War of the Seventies and the Falklands War where amongst other things it had the honour of being the first RN platform ever, to fire a guided missile at a surface target. However the story doesnt end there. Although the aircraft went out of service in the Royal Navy in 1988, it continued to operate with other navies around the world. To this day there are still several airworthy examples flying. The second part of the book gives accounts of these machines and brings the story of the Wasp completely up to date.

Book excerpt: This new history of the Royal Navy, published to coincide with the Golden Jubilee of the White Ensign Association, is a full and exciting account of all the many campaigns, operations and deployments conducted around the world from the Cold War and the Cod Wars to the Falklands War and the Gulf Wars. It has been written and compiled from privileged access to secret and confidential Admiralty Plans and Commanding Officers' reports and contains a wealth of previously unpublished material. The story of how the Royal Navy has adapted to meet the many new challenges of the modern world and how it has carried out its vital roles from manning the nation's strategic nuclear deterrent to guarding the vital offshore oil and gas facilities as well as protecting Britain's worldwide interests is a truly fascinating one, while the development of ships, submarines, aircraft, weapons, tactics and strategies as well as the changes in personnel and life at sea are brought to life by contributions from people who served over the period. Profusely illustrated throughout with many previously unpublished photographs and paintings, this beautifully-produced volume is a magnificent golden jubilee tribute to the Royal Navy.
