Aunt Deborah is a Professor of Psychology. Sigi is her fearless mixed breed dog. Together, the four of them think they are prepared for anything that might happen on a hike and a picnic. Of course, let us not forget that the hike takes place in the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky. It is a very rugged place to live! The roads are not as well maintained as one would expect in most other areas of the country. Weather changes can happen without much warning. Coal mines are abundant. Most families have their own graveyards. The four adventurers start on their hike. All goes well for several hours. Lunch goes without any problems. Everything is going as expected! Then they notice some unnaturally shaped stones up on a ridge. They investigate and find an old graveyard. It appears to be a lost graveyard mentioned in local legends. While they are reading the old grave markers, a bad storm sneaks up on them. About then, the dog chases a raccoon into an old mine. The others follow him and take shelter in the mine.

Dorothy was a little Kansas girl who had come to the Landof Oz to live and had been given a delightful suite of rooms in Ozma's royal palace, just becauseOzma loved Dorothy and wanted her to live as near her as possible, so the two girls might be muchtogether.Dorothy was not the only girl from the outside world who had been welcomed to Oz and lived inthe royal palace. There was another named Betsy Bobbin, whose adventures had led her to seekrefuge with Ozma, and still another named Trot, who had been invited, together with her faithfulcompanion, Cap'n Bill, to make her home in this wonderful fairyland. The three girls all had roomsin the palace and were great chums; but Dorothy was the dearest friend of their gracious Ruler andonly she at any hour dared to seek Ozma in her royal apartments. For Dorothy had lived in Ozmuch longer than the other girls and had been made a Princess of the realm.

I know lots of other stories, and I hope to tell them, some time or another; but just now my loving tyrants won't allow me. They cry: "Oz-Oz! more about Oz, Mr. Baum!" and what can I do but obey their commands? This is Our Book-mine and the children's. For they have flooded me with thousands of suggestions in regard to it, and I have honestly tried to adopt as many of these suggestions as could be fitted into one story. After the wonderful success of "Ozma of Oz" it is evident that Dorothy has become a firm fixture in these Oz stories. The little ones all love Dorothy, and as one of my small friends aptly states: "It isn't a real Oz story without her." So here she is again, as sweet and gentle and innocent as ever, I hope, and the heroine of another strange adventure.
