Book excerpt: This book was written for the Lucas family and for the fans of “Donkey’s Place” in Camden, NJ. The iconic business was founded by Leon Lucas in 1943. Leon was a boxer who won a medal in the 1928 Olympics. He became a Camden, NJ legend. Leon earned the nickname “Donkey” because his punch was compared to being kicked by a Donkey, a common sight in Camden, NJ when he was young. Leon invented a cheesesteak sandwich that is still made today exactly as it has been for the last 79 years in the same building. Not only has this legendary treat been passed down through 3 generations of the Lucas family but also through 3 generations of its customers. Many of them reminisce of when their parents or grandparents took them there for the first time to share the experience together. The love of Donkey’s Place is ingrained into Camden and the love of Camden is ingrained into Donkey’s Place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the farming community of the Kammanassie mountains in the Eastern Cape, Annelie Botes's family saga takes us into the world of the Verryne family - Daniel the father, and Schoonraad the son. Both men are passionate about their land and about preserving the beauty of the wildlife and fynbos around them, but they are both headstrong individuals who share an uncompromising obstinacy. A single incident which neither of them can confront drives them apart, creating a rift which seems impossible to bridge ... Botes's evocative style, with its touches of magical realism, and her ability to bring her characters vividly to life, makes Mountain of Lost Dreams a thoroughly entertaining read.

Book excerpt: 'An amazing book... Erudite, acutely observed and spontaneous.' - John Berger 'This is Zen and the Art of Donkey Walking. I cannot imagine a more charming, informative or restful book.' - Jim Crace 'Pleasantly eccentric and elegantly written, suffused with the patient calm of the admired beast.' - New York Observer 'A fond meditation on the calming virtues of donkeyhood and daydreaming... a wistful travelogue.' - The Sunday Times When Andy Merrifield made his first trip to America aged ten, he vowed that one day he would leave his native Liverpool and live in New York. He eventually got there, but his dream quickly turned sour. In 2003, weary of city life, he moved to central France and embarked upon a journey of the soul, walking amid the ruins and spectacular vistas of the Auvergne. This book is the story of that slow pilgrimage, on which his only companion is Gribouille, a tender and intelligent donkey with soft, thick fur on his brow and calm, dark eyes. The purposeful pace of his journey allows Merrifield gradually to confront himself, as well as the larger mysteries of existence - while marvelling at his tranquil surroundings and revelling in the oddities of French rural life. The Wisdom of Donkeys reminds us that observing, being mindful, and being present in the moment are essential to a fulfilled life. It teaches us that enlightenment is all around us if we only take the time to seek it.

"As a mama, we hope to find ways to teach our children about important character qualities such as kindness and resilience and it can be so hard to find resources! I loved reading this charming story to my 4 children and watching the smiles cross their faces as they learned the story of Shaggy Donkey. As we watch The Shaggy Donkey transform from a lonely hopeless animal to a loved and confident pet, my kids can hear how they have unique gifts that can help others. I am delighted to add this book to our library, and look forward to reading it through many times and being reminded that we can transform any obstacle to an opportunity. Thank you, Shaggy Donkey, for reminding my family about the importance of spreading kindness!" Brittany L. Pediatric Speech Language Pathologist "The Shaggy Donkey is a beautiful story about finding the good in ourselves and embracing the valuable gift of love. It's so important to instill the importance of taking care of living creatures for our children and this story nails it. One experience is all it takes to change a child, and sometimes a whole family for the rest of their lives. Must read!!" Justine S. Children's Teacher and Business Owner "Our resilience after a painful past is a testment to the gift of Grace we receive from God. Take it from The Shaggy Donkey; until his Rescuer came to change his neglectful circumstances, he lived in pain and fear. As he followed his new Master out of his dark and lonely barn, he began to sense a joy he never knew. Eventually, in his new home where love grew on trees, The Shaggy Donkey couldn't help but hee-haw with joy and ease." Jenny M. Children's Teacher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom of Kabbalah teaches us how to perceive and live in the reality that spreads before us. It is a systematic method that has evolved over thousands of years, nurtured by individuals whose task was to ensure that the true wisdom would be given to those ready to receive it. The Book of Zohar (The Book of Radiance) is an ageless source of wisdom and the basis for all Kabbalistic literature. Since its appearance nearly 2,000 years ago, it has been the primary, and often only, source used by Kabbalists. Written in a unique and metaphorical language. The Book of Zohar enriches our understanding of reality and expands our worldview. However, this text should not be read in an ordinary fashion. We should patiently and repeatedly read and think about each sentence as we try to penetrate the author's feelings. We should read it slowly and try to extract the nuances of the text. Although the text deals with one subject only-how to relate to the Creator-it approaches it from different angles. This allows each of us to find the particular phrase or word that will carry us into the depths of this profound and timeless wisdom.

Book excerpt: Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds employs current research in cognitive science and the philosophy of animal cognition to explore how humans have understood non-human animals in the Iberian world, from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. Using texts from European and Indigenously-informed sources, Steven Wagschal argues that people tend to conceptualize the minds of animals in ways that reflect their own uses for the animal, the manner in which they interact with the animal, and the place in which the animal lives. Often this has little if anything to do with the actual cognitive abilities of the animal. However, occasionally early authors made surprisingly accurate assumptions about the thoughts and feelings of animals. Wagschal explores a number of ways in which culture and human cognition interact, including: the utility of anthropomorphism; the symbolic use of animals in medieval Christian texts; attempts at understanding the minds of animals in Spain’s early modern farming and hunting books; the effect of novelty on animal conceptualizations in "New World" histories, and how Cervantes navigated the forms of anthropomorphism that preceded him to create the first embodied animal minds in fiction.

As the creation unfolds, one of the angels is so enchanted by the process that he desires to be a part of human evolution. It is not long before the Great Angel is born in ancient Nubia to a mother who makes the ultimate sacrifice. As he takes his first breath, his mother diesbut not before she makes his brother, Kumma, promise to look after the baby, who is named Semneh. Fifteen years later, Semneh and Kumma have grown into men. After Kumma saves the life of an Egyptian prince, he and his brother are taken to the princes palace, where they begin a new life. Kumma joins the Egyptian army, and Semneh becomes an artist. But when both brothers fall in love with a beautiful princess, their lives change forever. Semneh commits an act that he will carry with him for the rest of this life and beyond. In this visionary tale, ancient Egypt and Anatolian civilizations collide as a soul is reincarnated through multiple lifetimes in the quest for salvation.

Humans will deter from doing wrong if they believe someone is watching. This book is to expose the wrong, teach some legal issues, encourage change in our laws, and hopefully keep someone else from falling into the same snares. Bernie's greatest desire for publishing this book is to see his children again who he has been wrongfully deprived from for well over two years.
