Book excerpt: In the Beginning By: Valvier Latease Harris Bright In the Beginning follows the memoirs of an African American "BabyBoomer" as she shares colorful memories while tying it to a larger context of her ancestral research into her European Harris and Stokely lineages. Historical connections are made through narrative story telling that brings into vivid light a period in the South that describes family, culture, color, race, religion, economics, opportunities, disadvantages and more. Valvier Latease Harris Bright details her life from childhood to adulthood, from Knoxville, Tennessee to Montgomery, Alabama. Many from both the North and the South, black or white, who were born in the forties through the sixties, will recognize similar experiences and cultural touchstones including segregation and the civil rights movement. Bright chronicles her personal journey from childhood relationships through marriage, childbirth and the death of both parents that transcends all ages. It is an inspiring, provocative and endearing journey. "She has crafted well, a compelling and sensitive story descriptive of life for many, no matter what city or state! Her account of the meaningful journey travelled while in Montgomery was so nostalgic for those of us who encountered and can recall places, events and moments in time so vividly painted through her words." –Sheyann Webb Christburg Civil Rights Activist and Co-author, Selma, Lord, Selma "The telling of family history is sacred, in that it honors those who have come before and keeps them alive for those who will follow. Valvier Bright's reverent exploration of her own life story and family roots, range across multiple states, countries, and continents and lovingly paints a portrait that will enrich any reader." – Horace Randall Williams Editor and Author, Montgomery, Alabama

This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century, African Americans challenged segregation at amusement parks, swimming pools, and skating rinks not only in pursuit of pleasure but as part of a wider struggle for racial equality. Well before the Montgomery bus boycott, mothers led their children into segregated amusement parks, teenagers congregated at forbidden swimming pools, and church groups picnicked at white-only parks. But too often white mobs attacked those who dared to transgress racial norms. In Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters, Victoria W. Wolcott tells the story of this battle for access to leisure space in cities all over the United States. Contradicting the nostalgic image of urban leisure venues as democratic spaces, Wolcott reveals that racial segregation was crucial to their appeal. Parks, pools, and playgrounds offered city dwellers room to exercise, relax, and escape urban cares. These gathering spots also gave young people the opportunity to mingle, flirt, and dance. As cities grew more diverse, these social forms of fun prompted white insistence on racially exclusive recreation. Wolcott shows how black activists and ordinary people fought such infringements on their right to access public leisure. In the face of violence and intimidation, they swam at white-only beaches, boycotted discriminatory roller rinks, and picketed Jim Crow amusement parks. When African Americans demanded inclusive public recreational facilities, white consumers abandoned those places. Many parks closed or privatized within a decade of desegregation. Wolcott's book tracks the decline of the urban amusement park and the simultaneous rise of the suburban theme park, reframing these shifts within the civil rights context. Filled with detailed accounts and powerful insights, Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters brings to light overlooked aspects of conflicts over public accommodations. This eloquent history demonstrates the significance of leisure in American race relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go For Shakedown follows my experiences through Afghanistan. It is a fictionalized dialogue between characters based on true events. It aims to capture the human side of war from the absurd situations to the complexity of actual helicopter missions; all through the development of about a dozen characters and their interactions and reactions both on the ground and in the air. Shakedown is a call-sign for the helicopter. The helicopter is a civilian pattern helicopter that was converted into escort gunships by Canada in order to “get the job done.” A unique task since Canada is the only NATO country to NOT have helicopter gunships. Despite this limitation, the crews in Shakedown got the job done and were revered for their lethal capability yet always prevailing humanity. Whenever ground troops asked for support, they were affirmatively answered with, “Go for Shakedown."

Book excerpt: “The future’s not ours to see Que sera, sera.” BARRY CULL wasn’t supposed to survive to his fifth birthday. He was born with a hole in his heart at a time when that was a death sentence; however, times were changing, and an experimental surgery under development in Canada gave his parents hope. Barry did survive: He survived childhood open-heart surgery from the man who pioneered the operation. He got to hold his baby sister, and a baby brother after that. He moved from England to Canada and back, and back again. He grew, went to camp and to an experimental self-directed high school, took an ill-advised hitchhiking trip to the West Coast, played in folk and garage bands, and eventually earned a masters in child development psychology. But the trauma of Barry’s heart condition, and the things he and his family sacrificed to see him to adulthood, would reverberate throughout his life. His parents’ relationship broke down as both parents retreated into self-destructive coping mechanisms—his father into alcoholism, his mother into self-delusion and fantasy. He was emotionally abused through his teens and young adulthood as he struggled to find his feet. Long after his heart was beating at its full potential, Barry would find himself facing down the lingering specter of what had happened when he was just a child. His story is one of trauma and resilience, of struggle and failure—and, in the end, of healing.

Just as things heat up between them, her client’s past catches up to them, putting Lana in the crosshairs. Mark’s first assignment for Mr. Caldwell could very well be his last, and this time Lana might slip through his fingers for good.
